I managed to find a way to install an apple car play unit that does not interfere with the functions. Can work for all W124. This is the 7” screen which fits just fine. I routed the usb cables into the glove box.
Here is the unit on Amazon. It also sounds better than the old after market Alpine I had.

I had posted this on Radwood and I was surprised at the number of haters that I had installed this. I managed to do it without hatcheting the dash and at least I dont have to hang a bracket on my windshield to hold a smart phone. Non of the controls are blocked. Its not easy to find a unit that fits because of the recess for the radio in the console.

Yes it all works perfectly. In fact this weekend I installed reversing camera, and and JL Audio Sub with new replacement dual cone speakers in dash and rear. The head unit has a great active cross over and the sound is super crisp. The only thing is that when I hit reverse it does not switch screen to rear camera automatically you have to select rear camera option manually, but given all the other things it’s pretty ok .

That’s awesome . Is there a microphone pickup in the unit or did you install one separately somewher?

There is a separate mic which comes with it . Fortunately the previous Apline unit had phone function so a mic was already installed just to the left of the rear view mirror. I just reused that mic. The phone sound comes through the car audio . Also Siri works through the mic

More power to you!

It simply amazes me the number of people I see on the road with phone mounts right in their line of vision on the windshield. How can you see like that? It's got to be against the law, I would think, too.

That install looks nice - how does the unit function? For that price is it responsive? My concern w touch units in the w124 is that the particular location of the stock HU isn't really in line of sight, so if you're relying on it for nav it's not very useful vs my phone on one of the dash vents.

What JL Audio sub are you using and where in the car is it located?

The screen is fine to look at because you can adjust the angle of of view very easy anytime. I have found the touch screen to be ok. Responds well. The sound feeding the sub is raw signal RCA and there is a built in cross over and electronic sub control. I have not found using the Nav not problem.
I installed this Sub and in the boot stood upright facing back against the fuel tank. Takes up very little room.

I understand the objections, but it's your car and you should enjoy it however you want. A few questions. Did you install it yourself? How difficult was that? Does it connect with your phone solely via Bluetooth or is there a wired option? Can you still get AM/FM radio reception?
