Bring a Trailer (BaT) Auctions: Worth Listing Your Car or Not?

Fascinating to hear your different viewpoints on this... I used to enjoy the New York Times and got their daily news mail. Now I hate the NYT because it so often pushing an increasingly more and more extreme agenda. And Im saying this as a guy who is not a fan of our current president, nor a fan of our previous president.
Funny, the NYT has been relegated to everything non-news for me -- Arts and Culture, Travel, Cooking (some great tips) -- the quirky interesting stuff that other outlets ignore in favor of make you angry politico shit.

HAHAHAHAHA. Man every week I get that Arts and Culture newsletter from the NYT and I'm like "INSTANT DELETE." The reason I think is because I just have zero appreciation for arts and culture in my bones. I'm a neanderthal. 🤣

That's like me and all these spam text messages that start with the word Patriot😉

Me, getting #BannedFromTheBoard

The reality is, of course, by the time it hits any newspaper it's old news already.

But this piece (back somewhat on topic) was actually worth the time it took to read it.

Do these need spacers for .036?
Yes, but you don't want them for any .036 because the front wheels are narrower than stock. They would be fine on any other 124, with some fender lip rolling and other minor tweaks.

If you like them, you want a set of all four 8.5" wide for the .036, like I had on Mach5 years ago (photo below). No spacers required with this "square" setup.

It was a question for others' benefit. I love my 18x8.5" square, non-AMG fitment. The 17x8.25" square Evo are nice too but I think an 18x9 Neez Evo type look is probably as good as you can do on these. But I suppose reasonable minds can differ.

The 2-horse race was in-sane, in the membrane. After the 2 nutters bid to $0.15M... #3 bidder bailed at $48k, #4 at $44k, #5 at $41k. That puts the value solidly around $50k, which based on Deano's comments, was likely the reserve. Dean pocketed a cool $100k bonus above the reserve. Never seen anything like this before.

Anyone else know of a BaHaT auction where the winning bid was more than triple the 3rd bidder? Bueller?

Ridiculous price for an insignificant W124, a German taxi. But judging by some of the comments on BAT, some people believe this car to be "significant". I find it a joke. A 300SL Gullwing/ Sauber Mercedes C8/ E60 W124/ Mercedes SSK from 1929 could be significant, but this is stretching it too far.

They were weighing the significance heavily on the odometer. This is a serious case of buying a Dean™ odometer that comes with a free car. It is a spectacular E300, but I agree with bidders 3, 4, and 5 that real-world value is likely sub-$50k.

Note that the comment post-sale, "A fool and his money are soon parted" was removed/flagged.

The same guy also dropped $156k on an "insignificant" Jaguar on BAT......a car that was worth $50k at best. Maybe he was on drugs.....

I learned to read by reading the WSJ with my Dad every evening. We would sit on the family room floor with the paper laid out and he would be reading the financials while I struggled with the second section. I was always fascinated by the engravings.

The WSJ has an app on their web site that allows you to upload photos and gives the “engraved” effect. This is what I use for my avatar photo on this site.

Can you tell I love the WSJ? Lol.

My Dad was an avid reader of the WSJ too. I remember in the early 1980s him coming home and explaining the “Laffer Curve” to me one night at dinner. I was probably 15 or 16.

Interesting to see that Art Laffer is still around and kicking !!

I feel the same about the internet automotive experts They always seem to me to be rehashing the same old talking points about what could be most any model trying to fill up a 15-minute time slot. I nearly always become bored with lack of any content and turn them off.
@sheward @LWB250 I could not agree more. This extends also to written blogs.

A prime example of this, is If I have to read anything about AMG (car for sale/news/tech article) and the first 7 paragraphs are about (enter sarcasm) "what the company name stands for and how the founders basically sat around on their own dicks until 1987 when they made the Hammer." (end Sarcasm)

Drives me crazy! This written dilemma is then regurgitated into a script for a YouTuber to read back to their 7 million followers, and the cycle repeats itself. God forbid the video gets picked up and circulated by a blog...splash in a few typos and you've got a real nightmare.

Agreed. I think the '60's, '70's and early '80's AMG models (I'm looking at you 123 and 107 chassis) are some of their most pleasing creations. Tough to keep on the road these days, but that's a fate that besetting a lot of them anymore.

Cuzzin Pierre talks about the phenomenon of cars appearing on BaT and other auction platforms, and then getting sold and re-appearing a year or two later. And a great rant included on "car guys."

Can't say that I disagree with any of it.

HAT was pretty cool back in the day when it had niche collections of cars but now every piece of crap is being sold on it. i think what happens is they buy their dream car or whatever and it doesnt live up to the driving experience.

ive met a few and while they like the look of the cars, theyre coming from newer models w/ newer tech and they dont care for that vintage driving experience and end up selling their car rather quickly.

I was at a local house that runs sales of others' classics. USA muscle mostly, some other vintage cars from Europe, some really ugly USA stuff from the mid-late 70's. Sadly, about every awesome car I saw from the muscle era looked great until I found painted rust, painted cracked window rubber, bad gaps on and on. Most of this stuff was just pure lazy and it wouldn't surprise me if the car got wet and hit a bump, filler would hit the ground. Too bad, as some of the stuff was really looking good from 3 feet away. In many cases my little business card magnet had a hard time sticking to most of the fenders and rockers. Though the 70 Chevelle SS
looked great - it suffered from visits to the water color painter as well

Once people went from flipping houses to flipping cars, shit was a wrap. I blame the Free Money Fed, since they're independent and administration agnostic. Luckily I had all mine before then.

Yep. This: ^^^

Also, it doesn't help when a car that looks great cosmetically, has mechanical flaws which reduce performance / handling / whatever. Like the white RENNtech W210 sold last fall that was clearly missing a lot of ponies per the WOT video. New owner could be disappointed, not realizing something is wrong that "needs fixed", as the kids say. Ditto for your typical 500E where the new owner has the in-famous misfire issue and/or no-start after 15-20 mins, thinking it's an unreliable heap, when it just needs a proper repair. Remember the W124 E60 that had plugged cats the whole time the PO had it...? Etc, etc... if you don't have a reference point, you don't know what the car is SUPPOSED to be like.

It's worse if the owner is expecting twin-turbo AMG performance & handling from an 80's or 90's car; even when the "classic" is driving like new.

:grouphug:

In my opinion, and I have to agree with Cuzzin Pierre on this, "classic" cars are definitely NOT for everyone.

Too many folks get enamored with looks and splurge on a car (E500Es included), and rapidly get disillusioned when the reality (whatever it is -- maintenance, performance, cosmetics, etc.) hits them. We've seen this many dozens of times over the years on this forum, when some enthusiastic new member comes on forum with a newly acquired / auctioned car, and a month or three or six later they're already selling it.

The "Porsche" mystique doesn't always live up to the performance + quality hype.

Heaven forbid those who choose of their own free will to actually OWN and DAILY DRIVE 25- or 30-year-old classics. That's even too steep of a cliff for 98% of the members on this forum to climb, in terms of daily driving an E500E or equivalently aged classic Benz.

If you don't ever let yourself get suckered into the creature comforts and over-done electronics and nanny aids of newish cars, then actually owning and driving an older car -- and enjoying and savoring the driving experience of it -- is much much much easier and rewarding.

^^^ I'm crossing this bridge the other way, actually, learning that I'd always rather drive my old cars than my wife's new ones. I need them to "go, turn and stop" a certain way, heat the seats, play the music and stay out of my way (which new cars just won't).

"How do you turn all this shit off?" is still to me the first topic that should be addressed in every new car manual.

Oh, and by the way, all of the popping off I've been doing about the new Lexus we're picking up tomorrow -- over the past 5 years I've probably been lucky to drive the existing white Lexus once every two weeks. Typically for going out to dinner, that type of thing. 99% of all GVZ-centric driving for errands, wrecking yard runs, airport for business trips -- all done via 560SEC, E500 or G320.

For example a run to Buffalo Wild Wings two nights ago in the SEC, of which I posted a photo of its "integrated screen" while parking at BWW and waiting for our order. In August, it'll have been in my stable for 21 years straight. Anyone else on this forum near-daily-driving a 34-year-old dinosaur?

Our daily .034's are a mere 28-29 years old. Plus a couple of .133's that are 36 years old (and >300kmi) but they aren't DD year-round.

The worst is the "circle-A" start/stop that kills the engine at stop lights. I first encountered this about 15 years ago on SLK rental cars in Europe. Then the circle-A disease spread to US cars. It was driving me crazy on the Ford Bronco rental car I had in Orlando last week.

Until I finally found the circle-A "OFF" button just below the radio. Took me a while to find it.

Most rentals I've driven didn't have a Circle-A-Off button. The workaround is to left-foot brake and tap the gas to restart the engine, after it shuts off at a light. Then it will stay running, until the next stoplight. What a farce this "feature" is.

I thought you had a Land Rover ? Is that gone?
Still have the LR4! But the 034's get daily duty. Actually would like another LR4, or possibly an X166 now that the prices are coming out of the clouds. Tough to locate an X166 with the offroad package though, this was a rare option, but includes some features I want.

Or find this switch and push it, until you turn off the vehicle. Then rinse and repeat every time you drive.

I swear they work to hide that button. On the E450, Sport+ mode disables that stop start feature, which is of course why I like that mode. That and it takes the 15-speed transmission down into the single digits for practical purposes.😒

A few years ago when on a trip to Bawstun I ended up with a Jeep of some sort. Spooked me the first time it happened, then I realized what was going on. I didn't recall or know about a way to disable this "feature", so I just had to put up with it the rest of the trip. Grrr.

Sure, I presume starters are cheap, but that has to take a toll on the engine and other systems over time.

Crazy to think next year I can say I am daily driving a 30 year old car. Doesn't seem that old to me! But I have feeling daily driving it may be coming to an end. At 198.5k miles now and my goal is to hit 200k and then move on. Covid screwed up my plans otherwise I would be there now.

Ricardo, what would you move on to? And what are the plans for your 036?
