So....

I'm curious... why did some 124s get cases around the CD boxes.. while others did not?

Mine? I am case-less... :-(

I suspect they all came with the covering, but some may have been removed during maintenance and never replaced.

I can’t speak for the trunk trim pictured above but a lot of Euro cars came with no stereos! The dealers then fitted them before the car was sold. Blaupunkt was a popular brand to fit back in the day. Even the rear power antennas were drilled and installed by dealers - or so I’ve heard.

Installation spec varied a lot - usually just the head unit but sometimes also a changer in the boot with no trim. My S280 has a big Blaupunkt Amp mounted vertically in the boot along with a changer

+1

I see a fair number of them missing, but a lot with them too.

Since changers were always a dealer-installed option, the covers would have been part of the installation kit, and most if not all changers would have been installed with them.

If I remember correctly, to properly install or remove a cover, you actually have to unbolt the changer from its mounting to slip part of the cover through/around the mounting bracket, and then it sits in place. I can definitely see mechanics in a hurry short-cutting this process and not re-installing the cover because they forgot this. I've done it myself a few times, and it's a minor PITA to unbolt the changer to get the cover around it properly.

My two cents.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks guys. I think the do a great job classing up the trunk area. If anyone ever wants to get rid of theirs, and its in good shape... lemme know!

I come across them with some regularity at the yards. I’ll start picking them up in the future.
