CL500 failed emission test.

Hi friends,today i failed emission test on my 96 cl500!
I discovered that the engine runs smoothly as silk at times, but occasionally starts misfiring when hot! There’s a strong smell of a rich mixture coming from the exhaust!
The CO level was borderline, but the HC was very high! And the idle speed fluctuates occasionally!
I installed new Bosch spark plugs but set the gap to 0.8! Also fitted new ignition coils and coil boots! That was values:

I’ve ordered new Beru 14F-8DU4 spark plugs and will set the gap to 1 mm. I read online that Bosch spark plugs aren't competitive anymore since production moved to India.
Tomorrow, I’ll check the MAF readings using a computer.
What else should I look at? Most of the PCV hoses are new, and the remaining old ones are still soft and in good condition.
 
Check for any vacuum leaks, but I'm suspecting the MAF and/or O2 sensors.

Remember this is a 119.98x engine with ME 1.0 fuel management, and coil-on-plug ignition. It is totally different than the older M119's with distributors. A strong odor of rich mixture indicates most likely something amiss with the MAF or O2, although a hot misfire also needs to be corrected...

Hi,yesterday i search right pn to lambdas,but catalogue,i can accsess,has like 7 different numbers! Can you please,check from you catalogue right part number? If you can? There are 2 lambdas before cat,and i think both has same pn.

I think misfire is the problem! Damn,all new plugs,coils and coil boots! New part is faulty? I suspect spark plugs🤔. Tuesday i have new beru sparks!
 
Jeah,they rev engine 5 min in high rpm. I already tought that engine not survive the test! Very painful was to watch this! Where they get lambda value in the test? Car has 2 lambdas!

It is measured at the tail pipe.

Are your air filters clean?

I'm glad I'm not there to see and hear when mine is revved to get a pass for this test!

I'm not sure if revving at no load (in park) will get the catalysts fully heated, but it was better than nothing. I drive the last few miles to the testing station with the revs at ~4k (use 1st/2nd gear as needed) to fully heat the cats before arriving.

I have no idea where the test equipment is getting the lambda data.

Looks like 000-540-76-17 but I'd need your VIN (FIN) to confirm.

Yup, 000-540-76-17 is correct for your car. Quantity 2. I wouldn't replace these until after you fix the misfire problem though.

Why is this appropriate and what changed?
Bosch has updated this sensor slightly over time:
  • Connector and wiring: The electrical parameters and the round 4-pin connector remained exactly the same.
  • Cable length: The newer sensor cable is 580 mm (instead of the previous 500 mm). This longer cable is even better for your CL 500 (M119) engine, as it provides a more convenient reach to the sockets located near the gearbox tunnel.
  • Factory code: This sensor also corresponds to the newer Mercedes-Benz factory code A0005408517 . [1, 2, 3, 4]

Then they go lazy..
In theory, they can start to get lazy around this point, but they can also last twice that life (~200kmi / ~300kkm) while still functioning well enough to not cause any obvious loss in power or economy. Replacement doesn't hurt, but often isn't necessary if there are no other issues.

yes,cable is different lengh! Cose you are in that matter soo much home that me,what you say,can i use that product,what dr coogle say? Even when epc shows only one version and no supersession number?
 
The EPC shows data from when these cars were built 30 years ago. Mercedes stopped updating / superceding this stuff a long time ago. There will be no official information from MB. You'll need to try alternate part numbers and see if they fit. Most likely, a slightly longer cable will work just fine.

Seemslike as pelican parts and fcp shows,that 000-540-85-17 fits too my car! Damn,too much info...
But,if things finally sort out,there are tons of good information for future,for poor enthusiast gys like me!
 
Hi,chasing rough idle here and changing vacuum hoses! But here one question please,for what is that hose and where it goes? Does it must hold vacuum when engine idle? Mine aint holding vacuum!

Follow the vacuum diagram on the decal above the headlights. If not present, find the vacuum decal in the factory manuals. I think the one in your photo either goes to the transmission vacuum modulator (which SHOULD hold vacuum), or more likely, to the chassis vacuum consumers, which will NOT hold vacuum when tested via a hand pump like Mity-Vac.

My 119.980 has 722.6 trans and didnt see there vacum lines! Sadly fl.models dont have diagram anymore!
 
I think my ETA if faulty! When engine stalls,and ignition on,eta opens only max 20.2 degree and values is all mess up! if engine runs,eta value is 0,3 and 930 rpm. When ignition on but engine stalls,eta value is 4,4. One time rpm was 1003 but eta value was 0.
Fault code P0507.I deleted it but it coming back! When i did engine work,i changed rubber boot between maf and eta.Same time i cleaned throttle,do i broke it?

can i broke it,when turn eta flap manually? And another question-when i push pedal to ground,when engine not working and ignition on-do the eta flap must go fully open? Mine opens just a little,like in this video;

If you have ASR manually moving the butterfly will put it into limp home mode. You would have to cycle the key off then back on to reset it.
