Custom gauges - W140 into W124.

W124

Thought I'd share with the board. This is an e420 in Russia that is being converted to a E500 with an engine+wiring harness from a w140. He decided to put the w140 gauges into the w124 cluster since w124 gauges would not work with the w140 wiring..Also modified the speedometer to show higher speed - 360 (calibrated). Later he's planning to build the engine more and achieve 334 km/h...

I really would love to have the more modern gauges (W140, W202, etc) in the W124. The W124s one with front illumination looks pretty outdated. I'm already used to my W202 C36AMG ones and find the W124 stock just ugly - sorry.

Another Question i just had was if it is possible to remove the front "glass" from the case? If so i will airbrush the inside around the gauges in the grey color my C36 AMG uses. This looks so much better and sporty.

Is there any company/guy out there that can do custom gauges for the 500E? I think about a 300km/h Plate from the AMG. The AMG Gauge/Plate is nowhere to get anymore, just a handfull guys selling them in German Forums for north of 500€ which is waaaay to much for such a gimmick.

Pretty neat project he has there. Shame there is not more detailed info on the gauge build. And also his engine build. Even with 600hp, I think his estimate of 334kph (208mph) is highly optimistic. He's basing that on some crazy low Cd numbers from the Hammer but I don't think he understands how AMG got the Cd that low. I think it could crack 300kph, maybe 310kph. That assumes either 2.24 gears, or a 5-speed tranny (he mentioned a 5-speed trans but didn't have pics).

The guy doesn't say how much it cost him to have that done to the cluster, but he did say it took them a month and you can be sure that guy has deep pockets to take on a project like that. You could try contacting the company that did the work, but shipping the cluster to Russia and back- might not be cost effective. Here's the company's site (customizing and fabricating auto and industrial gauges is their specialty):

Here's their contact email for inquiries on customizing auto gauges and clusters (like with the example above I imagine they can do pretty much anything):

He also says that the air suspension in the front will allow him to lower the front when running for the record to lower the drag. Also 5 speed transmission(instead of 4 speed on the Hammer), modern tires with lower rolling resistance, better ingnition system than Hammer's...

Christian, are those AMG faceplates original AMG?

The 5-speed tranny isn't really required but it does allow use of lower gearing in the diff, assuming 5th gear is an overdrive. Rolling resistance is more of a factor for fuel economy, not top speed runs. I'll be very impressed if he cracks 200mph/320kph. It's not going to be as easy as he thinks, IMO. Hopefully there will be some official recording done via radar gun, timed traps (i.e. Bonneville), or at least a top-quality GPS. Speedometer readings don't count.
