E420 Transmission Oil Dipstick Length

Hi all,

I purchased a transmission oil dipstick, something like this:

It said it fit my car. FYI, my car did not come with a dipstick when I bought it!

My car is a 1995 E420.

Anyway, it seemed way too long. I figured I can cut this dipstick to size.

Can anybody share with me the length of their dipstick...

...so I can proceed?

The dipstick shown in your photo is for the electronic 5-speed 722.6 transmissions which do not come with any dipstick at all. It's a "shop tool" used to measure fluid level, then removed, and the cap replaced on the tube. This dipstick is useless for your car, return it if possible. 😟

Your 1995 E420 with four-speed 722.3 transmission uses a standard dipstick that remains in place all the time. You should be able to locate a good used one at a junkyard. New ones also appear to be available, p/n 126-270-00-83, $32.50 USD list price, ~$24 at discount dealers (plus tax & shipping) if you're buying other stuff to offset ship cost. There are some new and used ones on eBay for ~$32 delivered (click here).
