Euro E500E Headlights - NLA as of August 2017

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

installing the lamin-x on my pair in the morning

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Depends on the vendor. Husker is still showing ~$235. Naperville is ~$292. MSRP is ~$382. Left vs right is about 10 bucks different.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Thanks. Figured it out. One of the links in here was going to a different part number when clicked, I think for the assembly including the corner. These will be good spares in the event something goes wacky on those HID's.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Anyone who is on the fence, I'd order soon... there's no telling when (1) they might go NLA, (2) the price might shoot back up, or (3) the comm block will come back to spoil the party!

Now if we could just get the comm block lifted on the early 500E Euro lenses!!

Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Out of stock . . .

Edit: but Husker took the order. OEMDirect seems to be out.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

WorldOEMParts.com . . . but they're out of stock.

I used the link in post 34 to place an order. They were out of stock on 1 of the two, but are getting it from Europe.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Yeah, I tried ordering from WorldOEM too and they cancelled my order, see post #17. Don't know what their problem is, apparently they don't like to sell things and make money.

What he said......I'm sure I could dig through archives here to find but want to make sure I don't have guesswork

mine actually came in too and look great, another dumb question probably already answered so I apologize in advance for re-asking.... Does anyone have experience doing the install on these and is it a pretty easy diy that a doofus like me with just a hardware store socket set and a screw driver could do? Are there any other major parts removals necessary to be able to easily access everything?

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

H4 = main bulb, 60/55 watt
H3 = high-beam bulb, 55 watt
T4 = city light (optional), 4-watt

Note: City light bulb is 4 watt and has a T4 base, EPC shows it as "T4W", OE number 072601-012900. There is a 5 watt halogen which also works, Osram # 64111, also Osram 3886X is a 6-watt version.

EDIT: Bumper fog lights use H1 bulb, 55 watt.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

If you are shelling out for all new bits, look at the fog lights in the bumper. If those are all pitted and sandblasted, get new fogs too (they're not expensive). If a previous owner had already replaced them, great.

On mboemparts.com i got this part number for the fog lens'. is this correct? and all I need to replace for a fresh look?
Thanks!

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

I ordered the (UK Traffic) facelift Euro E500 Headlamps pair a few days ago. They should be here next week so I'll post pics when they get here from Germany.

I would also like to buy the pre-facelift Euro E500 lamps (UK traffic again) for my E36 build soon. This means I will also have the correct lamps to hand then should I decide to covert my 500E to pre facelift trim in he future (Steal them back from the E36!)

as an FYI, looks like the osram 70/65 are no longer manufactured but candle power believes these +100s from Vosla are a suitable replacement http://store.candlepower.com/64205.html

2 other questions before I "bulb-up" my euros:

- I have yet to see any illuminated pictures of the above but have noted from old posts that Ntrepid's list here seems to be pretty well tested with people on this forum, but I wanted to confirm that I shouldn't expect too "white" of a light.....I realize that makes for better performance but I want to be careful to not have lights that appear too modern for the car and I actually like the older school aesthetic of that more "incandescent light bulb" kind of look and was hoping these still have the same hue just brighter (other reality is I live in the city and don't do much if any backroad night driving where I would be more concerned)

- I also purchased the euro all white turn signals to be accurate with my car as a eurospec, does anyone have a P/N for the correct Amber bulbs (I was receiving conflicting parts between autohaus az and genuinemercedesparts.com trying to just navigate to it)

Your first question - don't worry about those bulbs being too "white". They are perfect, put out great light, and won't make your car look like a ricer.
Your second question - don't know. I also have the hella white corner lights with amber bulbs but never thought that there was a "correct" vs incorrect amber bulb. I'm interested in what others may say on this.

The difference is the Pin Fitment. For a W124 you require BA15S fitment bulbs. (180 degree Pins)

Much less common than the offset pins variety motor factor's stock.

Ah ok. And, the bulb needs to have a dual filament. One for the driving lights and the other for the turn signal light.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Hey everyone,

I was able to confirm that both the Osram 70/65 and also 85/80 are no longer manufactured. :( The 70/65 are pretty much gone (Dan Stern has one pair left available as of yesterday), but there is sizeable inventory for the 85/80 version if anyone was considering that route.

He also confirmed that there is a brand new Philips H4 bulb which is approximately equivalent to the old (NLA) Osram 70/65. It's considered a "+130" bulb and based on info I've seen thus far, it appears to be a pretty good replacement for the 70/65.

Website:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html

You can't order online, but he responds quickly via email: dastern@torque.net

  • 60/55W Philips Plus +130: $21.59/ea
  • 85/80W Osram Rallye $24.59/ea

He carries H1 and H3 bulbs as well, for the fog lights and high beams respectively, on E500E Euro lights. And pretty much any other bulb you'd ever need.

Some detailed techie information on the Osram 70/65 and an older Philips "plus" bulb (along with 2 others) is in this thread, for you electrical engineer types:

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Today the E500 Headlamps got here from MB Germany. They are the UK Traffic version E500 headlamps. Some pics attached.

They come without bulbs which for £££ headlamps is a bit miserable - but fortunately I had new boxed quality bulbs on the shelf for them.

The original little Wiper arms were in a sorry state with the paint chipped & peeling off. So I spent WAY too much time sanding them back and several layers of filler / etch primer followed by 3 top coats of Satin Black.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

I bought two new (R&L) Hella boxed headlights many years ago for my 1995 W124 E250D which I never used as per below pics.
I wonder if they would fit in my '92 500E since you reminded me with your MB E500 headlights purchase. I see that the numbers are different...
Does anyone know these Hella codes? Do they fit 500E as a facelift I mean.
I only have pics of the R Headlight for now.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

They will fit fine, but they are not correct.
^^^ What Jeff said. They will physically fit, but you will end up with 4 fog lights and 2 high beams. (And, the facelift 94-95 lens shape will look funny with a pre-facelift hood/grille.)

The E500E lights are unique to the 124.036 chassis and provide 2 fog lights (in the bumper) with 4 high beams.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

'Real' E500E headlamps are most easily distinguished by the Chrome reflectors & lenses. So yes not only will the driving lamps be incorrect (Fogs in stock units) but it is tell tale that the car has the wrong lamps fitted just at a glance.

My car came with the wrong stock Headlamps and it always bugged me so I'm glad to have the correct lamps now. Not to mention that the headlamp aim is now correct for our roads and the high beam is restored as designed

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Just an FYI here. I ordered a set of these for one of my clients today and Paragon showed more than 50 of each (left/right) of the 94-95 euro headlight assy's (124 820 35 57/124 820 36 57) and more than 250 each of the 92-93 euro lenses (000 820 12 66/000 820 13 66). All stock is still in Germany so it'll take a week to get, but looks like there's still plenty left.

Interestingly, there was only 30ish of the headlight units when I ordered some back in April, so perhaps there was a new batch produced.

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

Thank you, Steve! Just curious, are the 92-93 Euro lenses (000 820 12 66/000 820 13 66) still Comm Blocked, or has that been lifted?

:thankyou:

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

This may sound dumb but am I able to install these on USA spec lights after pulling them appart?

Yes, but ONLY on 1994 USA-spec E500 lights. They will not work on 92-93 500E USA lights.

BTW, where did you buy your lenses? Was that €310 EUR total or $310 USD?

+1 I have done this on a pair of NAM 94/5 headlights.

Dario:

Even if you use the 94/95 headlights as cores, you will still be missing the city light as well as the vacuum adjustment, so you are giving up 2 important Euro features.

Jeff

Re: Euro E500 Headlights - Easily Ordered online!

...and, you don't want to use 94/95 headlights as cores from E320/E420, since the reflectors are different than the 94 E500 USA lights... besides the stuff Jeff mentioned above.

You can still build a set of the pre-facelift Euro lights/lenses but it isn't cheap. And if the comm block is still on the early lenses, that's a PITA.

:thankyou:

When we ordered them yesterday afternoon, none of them were comm-blocked and all were open and available for ordering with stock in Germany. In my experience lately, the comm-blocked thing seems to come and go quite often, so some days it works and some it doesn't. My advice is that if you try and they are blocked, try again in a week or so and you might get lucky!

Regards,

Steve

Recent rumor is that the .036 headlight assemblies are rapidly going NLA. We can still get lenses (for now, according to the MB Classic site) but if you want complete Euro headlight assemblies... uh-oh.

I'm pretty sure this is the current status, if anyone can confirm or deny based on Paragon data (NOT online vendor websites) that would be helpful:

Pre-facelift:
124-820-43-59 - 500E Euro left headlamp - NLA
124-820-44-59 - 500E Euro right headlamp - NLA

Facelift:
124-820-35-57 - E500 Euro left headlamp - "Plenty" available per MBCC
124-820-36-57 - E500 Euro right headlamp - Confirmed NLA per MBCC

Pre-facelift:
124-820-47-59 - 500E USA left headlamp - NLA
124-820-48-59 - 500E USA right headlamp - NLA

Facelift:
124-820-07-57 - E500 USA left headlamp - Still available (quantity unknown)
124-820-08-57 - E500 USA right headlamp - NLA

:runexe:

We have bought L/R euro lenses a week ago, they were still available.... around 130eur each. Just in time.....

How about SpeedAutotiel in the Fatherland? OR however you spell it.
For the headlamp assemblies, unless you can find some on a dealer's shelf, you're likely out of luck. Speed-Autoteile just orders from a German dealer, they don't stock this stuff either.

Again, lenses (for right-hand traffic in USA and most of Europe) are still available - only the complete headlights are (mostly) NLA.

Pre-facelift lenses:
000-820-12-66 - 500E Euro lens, left (Confirmed available Aug-2017, inventory is ~180, see post #102.)
000-820-13-66 - 500E Euro lens, right (Confirmed available Aug-2017, inventory is ~180, see post #102.)

Facelift lenses:
124-820-57-66 - E500 Euro lens, left (will fit 1994 E500 USA headlamps)
124-820-58-66 - E500 Euro lens, right (will fit 1994 E500 USA headlamps)

:124:

Speed Autoteile cannot get them.

All of these lamps have now sold out. Only the lenses are available.

I'm glad I got mine. I do have 20mm laminex on them to help prevent rock chips. Maybe I need to get 40mm now.

Maybe MB will make a run sometime in the future. We can wish.

Where is a good place to buy lamin-x?

I have unopened & sealed Lamin-x Clear Lighting Covers (both headlights & fogs) for 94 E500 (fits 94-95 E-Class) that I no longer need.
Purchased from Lamin-x website several years ago. Not sure what their sealed shelf-life is, but I assume all adhesives are still good.
If interested, I am willing to pass on to a member here at a very reasonable price. $35 shipped sounds fair?
