Exhaust cam sprocket bolts stuck

I am in the middle of replacing timing chain guides and the bolts on the left side exhaust cam will not come out. I have used several different T30 bits from snap on to Mac to Gearwrench and all slip. I have tried heating them still no luck. Has anyone had to drill out the bolts and any advise would be appreciated.

Wow. I've never heard of this before. Can you apply heat from the back side? I wonder if the bolts were removed in the past and someone used threadlock. Hopefully you do not have to drill them.

:duck:

No never removed in 32 years and 265K miles. The right side was very tight but did get them out. The splines on the T30 twisted. I guess drill is only solution as I tried to get vise grips on them and just not happenin.

Well shoot. Have you tried a T35 driver? I can't recall if these are T30 or T35. My notes indicate T35.

If you do have to drill... good news is, replacement bolts appear to still be available. Bad news is, they are now 10x the price from a few years back. $28 MSRP each now!!! The later T40 bolt will not fit, there's an error in the FSM.

When I rebuilt the engine on my former E320 wagon in Houston, I could not loosen ANY of the Torx cam cap bolts on that M104.

I brought the entire cylinder head into the machine shop, both cams still installed, and they were (eventually) able to loosen all of the bolts. A number of them even THEY were unable to remove by normal means, so they actually had to WELD nuts to the tops of the cam bolts so that they could get a stronger purchase on the bolts to remove them.

I've already drilled them out no big deal. I have a great hardware store that if they don't have it you don't need it. They carry a great assortment of metric bolts 8.8,10.9 and 12.9. Not sure what the factory bolts are, but they drilled out pretty easliy with a sharp bit. If anyone knows the specs that would be great. Do you use blue loctite on these bolts it does appear there was any type of thread locker.

No threadlock is required nor recommended. The factory bolts have a captive washer, you'll need to try and replicate that setup if not buying new OE bolts. I can't recall if they are a curved/concave washer or flat washer.
