VIN: WDBEA36EXPB867619

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221457802031 <-- Auction ended June 12, 2014. Opening bid $60,000, reserve not met. Zero bids.

RENN Tech... Almost nothing else to say. Beautiful 1993 RENNTech Mercedes 500e with just under 29,000 original miles. Charcoal Grey with Black leather interior One of twelve that were built by hand at the RENN Tech facility. Of those, even fewer are on the road today. Incredible performance from a luxury sedan.
In 1998 with only 5,134 miles on the odometer this Mercedes Benz 500E began its journey to become a RENN Tech Mercedes 500E. RENNTech completed $109,460 worth of upgrades. The engine was completely rebuilt to become a 6.0L V-8 The engine received titanium connecting rods, upgraded camshaft, larger valves, higher compression, ported and polished heads, reprogrammed ECU, complete RENNTech stainless steel exhaust, tubular headers, high flow catalytic converters. The brakes used to stop this monster are 6 piston 14.1 brakes and mono ball link suspension and Torsen limited slip differential.
RENNTech only created twelve of these Mercedes Benz 500E of which even fewer are out there today. This car is as close to one of a kind as you can get. Born and bread from arguably two of the greatest car companies and nurtured into an even more powerful beast by RENNTech, this is one fantastic sport sedan.

Re: 1993 RENN Tech Mercedes 500e, 29K Miles - $60,000 (eBay)

600Eric, RE, Your avatar! My personal all time vote for the best looking engine ever under the hood of any MB passenger car, and I'm including the mechanical injection M100, and the 300SL / M198 in that. Actually that's my 1,2,3 order of preference, now that I think about it...

Re: 1993 RENN Tech Mercedes 500e, 29K Miles - $60,000 (eBay)

Cool car, shame it wasn't driven much.

Only 12 though? Nope, there are more 6 liter .036s by them than that.

Re: 1993 RENN Tech Mercedes 500e, 29K Miles - $60,000 (eBay)

Forgive my possible ignorance here because I have never "followed" these tuner cars so to speak, but is it possible that there really are only a tiny number of these 6 L conversions done on an .036?
IIRC, didn't they do most of their big displacement conversions on .034s because they were changing nearly everything anyway, often including a lot of bodywork?
It would not surprise me to learn that there really are only a tiny number of conversions done on vehicles that started life as .036s.

Just wondering...

Re: 1993 RENN Tech Mercedes 500e, 29K Miles - $60,000 (eBay)

There better be some good documentation proving the claimed upgrades. It is unusual for a RENNtech 6L car to have neither a larger airbox nor re-coated valve covers... and, I've only heard of RENNtech installing titanium con rods in the blue six-speed car. A photo of the side of the engine, showing the tubular headers, would be a good start. It's possible the car is as claimed, but based on the information provided thus far, I have my doubts.

The price is also optimistic, IMO. Keep in mind that the blue 6-speed car had confirmed titanium internals (only one I know of) in a 6.0L engine with lots of detailed photos of the custom headers, etc... and that car did NOT sell at ~$50k:

"Built by hand at the Renntech facility" Duh! Like Renntech has automated assembly lines or robots ;-)

I know one of the techs at RennTECH....there were more than 12 .036s 'handbuilt' at RennTECH with the 6 liter motor.

Gosh, it would be truly something though if I have seen half of all of the them that were supposedly created (according to this guy), seeing as I've seen 6 different 6 liter RennTECH .036 cars in my times as an owner/enthusiast (all of them were Connecticut cars too)

Interesting car for sure.

I don't think he's claiming only 12 renntech engines were built. He's saying 12 finished 500e's which might actually be correct. I know of 3 w/that color combination and might have an old photo. If it's a header car- that's quite rare. So what stage engine is he claiming to have?

I bet it's a nice car- but price is twice what the market will tolerate in the USA.

It's back, same $60k plus reserve.

CLAIMED six-liter car, with no documentation, and no photos of the headers. I remain unconvinced.

:watchdrama:

To All,
I am just here to clarify.
I know I will not be answering these questions in the proper order.
1- Before we listed the car I spoke to Harmut Feyhl directly and I am quoting him when I say that there were only 12. Harmut told me that he only did about 12 FULL projects like this one. He was surprised to hear we were listing it and we spoke at length about the car and the current 500E / E500 market.
2- All items that I listed are from the print out for the complete build of the car. Everything that is listed plus some items I have documented and you can follow all of the paper trail back to RennTech very easily.
3- After the first listing - (a combination of silence from the real buyers or some ridiculous spam from the fakes) we decided to not relist the car for some time. I will say that most questions that came our way were from the people that wanted to ship the car to their country in exchange for a winning European lottery ticket, distant relatives inheritance, or tanker full of oil.
4- We re-listed the car because we do have to sell it.
5- The car has limited badging because the original owner asked RennTech to do it that way. He wanted a bit of a sleeper. That was his preference and that is also confirmed in all of our documentation with the car.
6- The car is available to view and inspect. I welcome anyone who is in the area and interested to come to Chapel Hill, NC and see it for themselves. We have it stored at a facility that has lifts so you can truly inspect every inch of the car.
7- I will get some more detailed photos and documents forwarded to any interested party.
8- MONEY QUESTION-
I know we are at the top end of the price range, "AMG Country" but we are trying to get out of the car what we invested.

I joined the forum to answer any questions about the car you all may have. That being said, my knowledge is limited to what we learned from RennTech, our own documents that we received with the car, and our visual and photographic evidence.

I thank you for the forum and giving me the opportunity to respond.

Dan

What is seen cannot be unseen - Damage Photos

On the way to work this AM, I stopped by my mechanic (still troubleshooting a mysterious fuel smell). After leaving, I noticed what looked like a E500E tucked back in the lot of a British offroad shop. Even though I was very late to work already, I had to turn around to check this out.

Part of me wishes I hadn't...it ended up being a 1993 500E with ~26k miles that had taken an extremely hard hit on the front passenger side. To make matters even more depressing than seeing such a clean car so tweeked (possible front frame damage) was discovering this is a RENNTECH 6.0 car.

I do not personally know the owner and sincerely apologize if posting this is not appropriate (and will delete if needed). I do plan to reach out to the owner and express my condolences on his loss...very sad images.

that looks really fixable!! That or I can pick it up with a clean title for 5k=0)

Re: What is seen cannot be unseen - Damage Photos

Based on the previous asking price, I'm guessing it will likely be repaired.

:hiding:

Does this have the Alcon or Brembo upgrade kit? 12 total 500e's or 12 complete stage 4 6.0 liter engines.

Many of these cars were done piece meal through the years? Renntech did mine w/OE clutch type diff. I though the original Torsion-gleason ones were not real durable(?).

Clark, I don't think there was near the turner volume or market in the USA. Now Consider, we know a 93' 6.0 AMG conversion which is serial number ~350, there were quite a few motors made.

Beautiful car, would expect $35-45k.

Michael

I've talked to the owner (Chris) over email a couple times and it seems he is planning to sell as is...for $39k :wow:. Seems just a bit high...seeing that it's wrecked and all...

I don't know, if that engine if it has all the claimed parts (titanium) and other full tilt mods
is probably good for $25K to duplicate. From what I can see in the pictures, maybe 10K in damage.

I'd say he's about $10K high, $29K might work as is if my damage estimate is close.

.

Agreed on the engine, which I did express interest in if he decided to part out the car. However he didn't strike me as the type of guy to part it out unless he had a shop part it out for him.

I'd like to see Just how extensive the damage is... I would think they would tend to it @ the 10k mark, no?

Agreed, that's a 20k++ engine Easy!

I was thinking in the $25K range myself. For that much scratch, you can build (or have VAETH or GSXR Industries build) a VERY nice 6.0.

^^^ +1.

With current market values, I'm not sure it would have fetched $39k even before the accident. Looks like an easy $10-$15k in repairs to do it right, and even if the title is clean, the damage will haunt the value. I have a feeling it will sit quite a while at the current asking price, with the damage. My logic: If nobody was willing to pay $60k for it accident-free, who would pay $50-$55k ($39k + repairs) for it with a major front end repair? The engine and goodies are really sweet (assuming they are present, and undamaged - still no header photos) but the value is what the market will bear...

:seesaw:

Absolutely. I wonder what the circumstances were behind the unfortunate event.

From what I understand, the car was driven during winter weather...not a snow storm (as we don't have those here that ofter). Hindsight would have been to not drive that day...

Ohhhhh. Summer tires do not play nicely in temps anywhere near freezing (or below). Our 036's go into hibernation, indoors under a cover with battery tender, from about mid-November through early March until the temps remain above freezing.

:

My 034 is currently running Michelin Primacy MXM4 rubber and it gets squirrelly when the temp is under 50 degrees F with any moisture in the air at all. My Dunlop Sport 8000 tires were even worse...GREAT on a warm and sunny summer day though!

Now imagine that scenario with ~420hp on tap instead of ~275!!

:duck:

Apparently this car popped up for sale and nobody caught the listing, and it sold earlier this year? It was listed in 2021 with 34kmi shown and "Price on request". New title was issued in July 2022. Wonder if the selling dealer and/or new owner are aware of the prior accident damage.

The 2021 photos (which possibly could not be any darker!) confirmed tubular headers are present, along with a RENNtech all-aluminum radiator. :wow:

Every car we represent has a great story and this rare E500 is no exception!

The Mercedes 500E is a rare piece of German automotive history. Back in the early 1990’s when Porsche was trying its best to go broke the guys a Mercedes steeped in and had them do the heavy their lifting and had them engineer shoehorning a V8 into the W124 chassis and the E500 was born. Upon approval of the project it was discovered the added track and fender flares made it impossible to go down the Mercedes assembly line. Porsche was asked to step in and help assemble the E500 and this autobahn monster was born. This was an expensive endeavor in 1993 and these cars listed for over $80,000 here in the U.S., a huge sum! This car has traveled only 34,000 miles since delivery and is in excellent condition. The story gets even better in 1998 when the owner decided to have Renntech breath on it with all of the upgrades. The 5.0-liter engine was upgraded to a 6.0, the transmission was also reworked for 1st gear starting and the mono ball suspension and Alcon Renntech brakes all added. The lower cladding was painted body color and a then new set of BBS wheels completed the package. These upgrades far surpassed anyone else at the time and made the AMG “Hammer” drivers lose sleep wondering what just blew by them. Truly a wolf in sheep’s clothing and incredibly rare with only 9 or so examples being built.

Even the sites I follow that track and conglomerate auction results from other sites globally didn’t catch this one. I’ve never even seen that auction site before. They’re popping up like dandelions. Good catch @gsxr

It wasn't me! motap gets the credit for spotting this one. (y)

From the newer pictures can anyone tell what was replaced other than I assume fenders / lights / hood. Is the core support original?
Unfortunately the photos under the hood cropped out the important areas of the upper radiator support, above each headlight. Can't tell if that was replaced or not (i.e., if the original decals are present).

This car popped up on Hemmings - better pics - no price given.

Moderator edit: Asking price is $85k.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E

Every car we represent has a great story and this rare E500 is no exception!
The Mercedes 500E is a rare piece of German automotive history. Back in the early 1990s when Porsche was trying its best to go broke the guys at Mercedes stepped in to do the heavy lifting and had them shoehorning a V8 into the W124 chassis, at last, the 500E was born. Upon approval of the project, it was discovered the added track and fender flares made it impossible to go down the Mercedes assembly line. Porsche was asked to step in and help assemble the 500E and this autobahn monster was born.
The 5.0-liter engine was upgraded to a 6.0, the transmission was also reworked for 1st gear starting and the mono ball suspension and Alcon Renntech brakes were all added. The lower cladding was painted body color and a then new set of BBS wheels completed the package. These upgrades far surpassed anyone else at the time and made the AMG ''Hammer'' drivers lose sleep wondering what just blew by them. Truly a wolf in sheep's clothing and incredibly rare with only 9 or so examples being built.

All I can say is WOW!

I drive the 92' 5.0 Renntech when I can and truly enjoy the experience. However, my Renntech has 180k on the clock.

Even IF I could afford this 6.0L monster, would be afraid to rack up the miles and would be prone to finding a climate controlled vault to preserve its beauty.

Would trade both, 92' and 93' 5.0L 500Es for this one though.

Wonder if he's open to trade?

Replaced ML63 intake manifold gaskets, pvc valve, spark plugs, valve and cam covers, most fluids, wheel speed and ABS sensors, and a few other items at this point. Just got a new radiator because I have a slow leak out of the plastic part on side of radiator.

Been a learning experience, but she's slowly getting sorted.
