G320 - Dec 1994 model - Throttle body questions

Hi Gerry and all G320 owners,

I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help me clarify about the G320 throttle body.

Like many people I am having erratic idle issues with my G-wagon. Some days the car sparks to life with one turn of the key and runs perfect. A few hours later or another day it will start then stop, restart and stop. If it stays on there is erratic idling until it settles down (why it does I cannot figure that out). I can drive a few miles and come to a turn and the car sometimes cuts-out. This is a very dangerous situation and I have nearly had other drivers crash into me. Its making me so nervous that I am reluctant to drive it any more.

I have replaced every Sensor on the car (Lambda, Crank, Camshaft, Mass A/f, Air Temp, Magneto and 3 water temp sensors), except the external air temp sensor that I simply cannot find the location of. So I am confident that its not one of the sensors. I have also completely cleaned the Throttle body with Throttle-body cleaner. I cleaned, tested all the injectors and replaced the seals, as well the fuel regulator and in-line fuel filter on the injector rail and the fuel filter at the rear of the car

As far as I can see the wiring harness looks to have been replaced (or original but one that Mercedes changed after realising their mistake), there is no evidence of any cracking or deterioration of the wires. So now I think the only thing is the Throttle body. My car has cruise control and the part number is 000 141 5725.

I have been to my local Mercedes dealer and they gave me a print-out for my car that showed there were three variants of the throttle body:
1. A 000 141 9825 (It said it was replaced by part number A 000 141 0325
2. A 000 141 0325 (Cruise control actuator) used without ASR
3. A 000 141 5725 (Cruise control actuator) used without ASR.

My questions are:-
1. Are these throttle bodies interchangeable?
2. Does my car have ASR?
3. Is the 5725 the part number that has both internal wiring and the "Clutch" problems? I believe this is one of the most difficult to repair.

I have found a Company that has one they have re-furbished and re-wired but they never mentioned anything about the "Clutch" being replaced/repaired. Its a lot of money so I would appreciate any opinions before going down that road. They do give a 12 month warranty.
Many thanks,
CHL

My questions are:-
1. Are these throttle bodies interchangeable?
Probably not interchangeable. The EPC indicates one of those part numbers is for LHD up to 1995, the other number is for RHD as of 1996. The difference may just be the length of the wire... maybe. Can't tell for certain without the VIN.
EDIT: See post #4 below for update with VIN-specific information.

2. Does my car have ASR?
Not sure what car you have, but your truck likely does not, since the dealer provided you numbers for trucks without ASR. Models with ASR will have a square orange warning lamp in the center/top of the speedometer, and likely a snow chain switch also. Look up the datacard for your VIN, if it has ASR it would be option code 471. I expect you won't find that code.

3. Is the 5725 the part number that has both internal wiring and the "Clutch" problems? I believe this is one of the most difficult to repair.
The wiring issues are not related to certain part numbers. ALL part numbers of ETA's have the wiring problems. It's based on date codes. Originals through about 1996 production had the defective wire insulation. Later datecodes have good insulation.

I have found a Company that has one they have re-furbished and re-wired but they never mentioned anything about the "Clutch" being replaced/repaired. Its a lot of money so I would appreciate any opinions before going down that road. They do give a 12 month warranty.
What company, and where are they located? If they don't specifically mention internal parts being replaced, they are not replacing the internal parts (microswitches, clutch, potentiometers). Rewiring won't help if internal components have failed... or are about to fail.

Hi GSXR,

Many thanks for replying so quickly and with great info. Much appreciated.

Well my car is from Nov 1994 and is European so you have answered the questions about the interchangeability and Years with good/bad wiring. My car is indeed Left-hand drive using the 5725 part number.
Also I do not see any ASR light (there is an SRS light) and there is no button that I can see about Snow-Chains, so I guess that clears that up.

I don't have access to that EPC system but my VIN number is WDB46323117098014 - Nov 1994 Left Hand drive model. Just in case you can see any more useful info than I can gain.

The Company is "Kurth Classic Auto Parts" in Germany. I have bought many parts from them, great service and price. They have a range of parts that I could not find elsewhere. I have mentioned this supplier previously to other 500E members who had similar issues. (I am not in any way connected to them, its only through previous buying for my own car!!). What caught me out is that on their web-page they have a Tab for each type of Mercedes including W463. So I have never seen a 5725 throttle body listed. But, a few days ago I thought what if they have it under another Mercedes model and sure enough they have a refurbished one available.

Again, many thanks for your help.

Best regards,
CHL

The VIN is a big help! See updated screenshot below specific to your VIN. Your G320 does not have ASR (no code 471 in datacard). Click here to see an online datacard.

The dealer part numbers are correct... however the footnotes change based on your VIN / chassis number. The part numbers differ based on the engine serial (not model year or LHD/RHD). Yours should be 000-141-57-25 since your engine is prior to the breakpoint of #001163.

I believe Kurth may not have an ETA on the shelf ready to ship, but you'd have to contact them and ask. They may need you to send yours in for testing & repair. I believe their base price is only for rewiring and testing. If additional components needs replacement (switches, pots, clutch) the price will be higher.
