Gear shifter- Light or lights?

Hi guys just a quick question-

I fully stripped out my interior recently as I'm restoring my 500e and I opened up the transmission shifter yesterday to clean it and replace the bulb. I found the small glass bulb easily enough, which was blown of course, but I am slightly confused as to the 2 other bulb looking things are?

There are two orangy yellow colored bulb shaped things close too the actual bulb and I can't figure out what they are and they seemed permanently attached to the end of the wires which they were on. Any knowledge would be appreciated!

My shifter selector is lit up, and as I move the selector to a location it gets brighter. Perhaps that is what it is? I too replaced bulb but didn't recall the others you describe. I may have not paid attention. I have facelift 94.

It is a flexible fiber optic light guide that takes light from the bulb and focus is it on the translucent indicator segments. It moves along with the shift lever so that when you are in "D", for example the "D" will be illuminated a little bit more. This came from the R129. IIRC, it is not on any other 124. I don't even remember it being in the E400E...

Klink is correct, this was an R129 item and was only used on the 124.036, not any other 124 chassis.

I have no idea what the two orangy yellow colored bulb shaped things are...

If I'm reading the Klinktionary ('nuf respect!!!) correctly, the two orange things are light guides, that work sort of like flashlight lenses.

AH, yes, that is it... they are the lenses on each end of the fiber-optic pipe! Forgot they were even visible. IIRC, you don't normally see this when just replacing the bulb.

I need to replace this bulb as well (mine works about half the time). Anyone know which bulb (number) it is? Just so I buy it before opening up the console.

It is also found on my G320 (W463 chassis). Identical part to the .036.

Sounds like a bad case of Klinkitis.....

I believe it's now been posted in the Wiki relating to .036 bulbs.

As far as I know, the non-.036 W124 models did not have this "feature".

OK, so it looks like (of course) that is the only bulb in the car that is a Mercees Bulb. ;)

Looks like made by Osram, and you can find them for cheap, but they aren't worth ordering all by themselves. Need to add on to some other order. :)

Klink- Thank you very much! That makes perfect sense. I guess my shifter must be a transplant from a 129? This car has so many surprises. I found an Amsterdam cigar pack dated 1992 lodged inside the floor vent under the drivers seat when I took out the main carpet last week. There were also living things under the back seat..

@Dbreid you can get 10 Orsam's on eBay for $13. Dunno about your car but my A/C vent lights had gone aswell. Most of the intricate interior uses those small bulbs
