NYT Article on Car Companies Collusion with Insurers on Driver Behavior

Likely behind a paywall to those who don’t subscribe to the NYT or have hit their monthly limit of free articles. An excerpt from the sub-headline:

Automakers Are Sharing Consumers’ Driving Behavior With Insurance Companies

LexisNexis, which generates consumer risk profiles for the insurers, knew about every trip G.M. drivers had taken in their cars, including when they sped, braked too hard or accelerated rapidly.

Another reason to enjoy our analog rides and be more skeptical of new technologies.

That’s crazy, not surprising, but crazy. I hated when the obligatory SOS eCall system became mandatory for all new cars sold in the EU. I don’t trust the car companies with my data at all. You don’t have to be paranoid to be followed. 😊

All the more reason to keep our analog cars. I’m curious if Lexis-Nexis is also using cellphone data to get roughly the same information.

I for one am extremely frustrated my insurance rates have doubled in the past 2 years. I’m sure some of the increase is due to spying on our driving habits but I don’t feel as if I need to be penalized for the increased costs if I have no tickets or accidents that were caused by me. I had a conversation with my insurance agency yesterday. What I find insulting is I’m being charged more for my 300CE over the SL500 with the same coverage. Furthermore if I had an accident in the 300CE they would total it and give me a complimentary check for $1500 when the car is worth at least 8K. I will probably insure that one as a classic for a stated value policy. Damn greedy bastards if you ask me!

@Alphasud40 - who is your insurance company? When was the last time you shopped around to compare premiums? (Note that you still need to stick with a reputable company - some bargain companies may be useless if you ever need to file a claim and extract money out of them.)

If you have a newer car to claim as your daily driver, you can insure your limited-use vehicles through Hagerty as agreed value for what is typically a far more reasonable rate. Hagerty usually wants at least one car not more than 10-12 years old on your "normal" policy though.

I have State Farm insurance. Last renewal I shopped them with other companies same coverage. It wasn’t enough to justify the switch. I have 3 cars insured with Hagerty now and the 300CE was going to be the daily driver split with the SL500. I have a Ford F350 that I only drive as needed. Living in North Idaho insurance used to be cheap.

Southern Idaho used to have reasonable rates too... not any more though. Read my long-winded post here about my insurance journey over the past decade.
