...and I like to show you my new substitute which I wanted normally to drive on a daily base but in this condition I will skip the nasty winter time. The condition of this car is even better than the already fantastic E 60. I am not sure if there is a similar car in such condition even if no E500E but... the car is like a wandering dune (no turbo but a prechamber (?!?) diesel): Time with this car is not important. You are driving not from A to B but "the journey is the reward", I think you may know what I mean. The sound of the engine remembers me to the time of the taxis in the 90th. The car is getting 20 years in November, has zero rust (now protected with Mike Sanders fat) and the service intervals were as follows:

Have a look :
That is awesome! The OM605 is a great motor. Beautiful... what a great find...!!

:wootrock:

Ahhhhh the 2.5L diesel. Oh, how I loved that engine! So smooth! Mine almost ran as a gasoline engine, no shakes or vibrations, nothing! I hope this car will serve you well! :)

Hi Arnt,

I think, no alu wheels will survive for 20 years without any hit. So I remember, that Bernhard said, he has had refinished the EVO II wheels. So I guess it is now the grey all over paint.

Jelmer,

even if not the thread for that but I will try to deliver to a later stage a short trailer with the sound of this traditional 250 D engine without turbo. The sound is so different to all todays diesel and of course to the E500E's.

Yeah, you do that. Will bring back memories.

I recall seeing an old MB Taxi at a station a looong time ago. Was a 250D, as well. The damned thing has 770,000km on the clock but ran more smooth than any engine I've heard. I'd gladly trade in my Volvo for that 250D you have!

he, he, nice try but no chance. Will not sell, can only regret. No one of the three ones will be sold.

But now you need to buy a new daily driver ! Do you have an Idea or can we suggest cars ?

I think I will stick to my opinion to use the 250 D at least for the good weather daily drive. Bad weather and snow time I will cover with our family car. I have nothing to complain, the car is good running but very unsexy, it is a Ford Galaxy. This car brings me finally from A to B.

I would like to tell you a story why I'm going to do so. In my former job (banking industry), I saw, how clients were saving in their life for "later". Never doing holiday and working hard, but saving for "later". When they were about 75 years old, they were still saving. You know what they did wrong? They have never defined when "later" should be. And now they cannot change anymore their attitude. Now they cannot do things anymore what they like (traveling and so on) and their demands to the life are decreasing due to their health decrease. End of this story is, they never enjoyed life.

Relating to my person i am imagining when I am sitting on my last seat of life (do you say this in english??), then I don't like to say: wow I have had 3 nice cars but was nearly never driving. But what about that when I can say: I was driving nearly always in my life one of my wonderful W 124 independent which one. That sounds for me enjoyable. Sorry for this long story but this is a little bit my philosophy. Enjoy life where you can when you can afford. If not enjoy life at home.

Puhhh, sorry guys was long and might not interest everyone, but I felt I would like to express my view. Every KM in those cars brings happiness. You know it yourselves.

By the way, have recorded the historical sound of the 250 D and will try to load into youtube. When done I will send the link. Hope this will work with my simply IT knowledge.

The problem, if you want to call it that, with owning really nice cars is that all you can do is look at them. Not that there is anything wrong with that. :whistling2:

No need to apologize, a point well said. BTW saving at 75 is also known as a "Cheap B*st*rd" :D

Love the roller windows ! I mean when was the last time you saw one of these :deniro:

proxy.php

yes, crazy configuration, for a diesel untypical: light wish wash, leather, orthopedic left seat (not for his wife!!!). automatic, air con, but...roller windows!!!

so, you know what I mean.

Now I can say my three W 124 are covering most of the car relevant circumstances: fantastic weather (hot and sunny) E 320 Cabrio, for mental deceleration E 250 Diesel and to beat the disbeliever E 60. That's happiness. :-)

Lucky guy, well done :)

I just thought of a reason for the roller windows: possibly the buyer was paranoid about driving into water with the car and being unable to open the windows. Might've been an actual choice!

Jelmer, by the way, is this your car as avatar? Then - looks like driving max speed.

Hmmm, you should consider to get the correct EVO II wheels in Diamond Cut Finish, they were only delivered on the Limited models. I think they're still available from MB. (But you almost never find them on Ebay.)

Rumor was the Limited "high sheen" Evo wheels are NLA... but you'd need to check stock in Germany.

:apl:

they are the correct EVO II wheels but only "refreshed" due to some hits during their history. Agree that it might be not the correct finish, but this does not disturb me. I am now ready with my little car pool and I think all cars are almost in a perfect shape. Some slight divergencies I can accept as long as the products are original.

One day I hope to inspect the rest of your cars, but for the E60 I can say: keep it as it is. It's a beautiful car, especially considering the age and the fact that everything is original.

Yep :)

Correct! Tried endlessly 2years ago. Some dealers claim they have 'em till they open the box and turns out silver finish only. They do come up on ebay but not a lot!

OK, I understand. I have the same problem on the EVOs on my Limited with corrosion slowly developing under the clearcoat on some spots. I have tried to fix it, but it makes it even uglier. Refinishing the Diamond Cut Finish is in fact a common problem. It is possible, but time consuming, and the vast majority are not willing to pay for it.

I've enclosed a couple of pics showing the two finish types.

Can be seen here too: https://www.google.com/search?site=...q=Mercedes+EVO+II+wheels&safe=active&tbm=isch

However, I am sure your car looks great with the silver coated finish too. :-)

I didn't even think it was possible for aftermarket shops to properly refinish the "high sheen" aka "Diamond Cut" finish... how do they do this? I have the same problem on mine, Arnt.

Dave,

I read it on a forum some place, but it was no links showing the process, only a brief explanation. They used a programmable lathe (CNC) and simply machined the wheel face by removing just some hundreds to create the pattern.

If you study the surface you see tiny groves from machining, or maybe a grinding process. If you remove the clearcoat you clearly feel the grooves with your fingernail too. This can be replicated with traditional machining with tiny cuts and low feed rates, but the wheel can spin fast though.

So, the cost is to align the wheel in the lathe, program the wheel face, and choose correct cutting technique. I guess you get a good 30++ minutes coffe break per wheel during the turning. :-) After this comes the coating in-between the spokes and in the pockets. It would be nice to try this one time, I just need a lathe available.

I can tell you its not the most durable finish available. I had low mileage 2009/2010 MBs with High sheen wheels and they already have corrosion and bubbling clear coat.
Either do a Hochglanzdichtung finish or shot peen finish like the BBS wheels .. much more durable and have a better shine.

Yes, I think you're right. But the problem is in fact the clearcoat applied to prevent discoloration and to achieve less maintaince. Coating alloys is always a challenge with the bonding, it will gradually come loose at small spots and the corrosion start to develop under the coating. It is better with no clearcoat, but that requires a lot of cleaning and maintenance of the bare material.

Hey Guys,

hope you have had a good start in the new year! To cover the waiting time till most of you can take their beauties out of the sleeping bag please find attached a nice comparison between an E500 Brabus 6.4 against MB CLS 500 Brabus. It is interesting that both cars have the same time for acceleration from 0 - 100 km/h: 4,7 seconds!!! We are talking here about 20 years difference in technology! Respect to the W 124 but of course as well to the tuner of the E500. Find attached two photos of the story. Enjoy!

Hey Gerry,
good to hear from you. Yes I am fine. Ok, understood, I am too little on all the threads.

Yes, would be great to meet you again this coming June. Beginning of June would be better as I will be on both annual meetings of the W 124 CC & W 124 Dt Clubs second half of June.

Take care

Hi there Re Vox do please wright a little something in the thread, 2014 Intern. GTG as you say, a double W124 C and 036 one week apart would be
a very good opportunity for participation in both meetings. It is a strong request from some owners here in Scandinavia, hope to see you, Roger

Hi Roger and all others,

good to hear that there is some interest in such meetings. There are existing two W 124 Clubs in Germany. One is the W124 CC Club which accepts only W124 Cabrio's, Coupe's and V8's. The other club is the official W124 Club Germany which is accepted from MB Headquarter's side. In this club are all W124 models welcome, means as well T-Modells and 4-cyl Diesels. Only requirement for both clubs are mostly original cars are allowed to be member. Some likes the one club, others the other. Me I like both. During the annual meetings around 50 W124 beauties are meeting with there drivers for around 3 days in one part of Germany. The owner of an annual meeting is always a member who is taking care of. I did it for the CC Club in 2009 in Lux. To see 50 W124 cars in a row driving is unbelievable. This has a dynamic and the heart of a W124 enthusiast is pumping. Believe me. The hotel parking is showing only 124's, even if mostly are not 036, but as well. For the CC Club the annual meetings are already reserved till 2018, which shows the interest in such events. Unfortunately both home pages are only in german language but if someone is interested I can share and translate with him the program. The CC club will has its event this year (19.-22. June) on the island "Rügen" and the lake area of "Mecklenburg Vorpommern". The official W 124 Germany will has its meeting this year (26.-29. June) in Stuttgart. In both clubs are some 036's. Please find attached one picture with the badges of all my tours as well as the current magazine with a picture of three V8's (E500 Limited, E60 AMG Limited, E420) in front of the Alps in Bavaria from the last annual meeting.

ReVox thankyou ever so much, I see now 2014 will be the year to set standards for the W124 AND 036'es meetingwise
with many from all around taking part. Too bad there is in this case, anyway, an Atlantic crossing for the New World to do.

With great interest and joy I will take part of this material, and spread the word. HEY GUYS DID YOU HEAR.......... Roger

Roger,

I think for tasting the atmosphere it might be for this year the annual meeting of the CC Club as nearest. Maybe there is a ferry from Trelleborg to either Sassnitz or Warnemünde/Rostock which would save a lot of km's for the guys from the north.

Best, ReVox

ReVox, that was my very thougt, I have a very good and old friend *Cobra* Torsten and he has been touring Gearmany
a numerous of times by car and motorbike.
We have been planning for this summer and hopefully make a double 036 and W124cc event and are
very eager to stay in Germany and not having to choose one out of two.

So hopefully the 036 GTG will not take place in the same weekend, before or after no matter what to us.
As this 2014 is the 30eth anniversary for the W124...........and I remember it as yesterday........ we have to make it special. Roger

Roger, good to see that there are other 124's freaks in the orbit as well. Good advise from experience side. The invitation for the 124CC event was sent out last week. I know that everyone is booking very soon their room in the hotel. You should not wait to long. Everyone who was there will not let pass the following years. I will contact you by private message.
