Hi all,

Some of you will have seen my other recent posts. I have bought what appears to be a nice used 1992 production 119.970 motor to go into my S500 W140 Coupe.

As it happens this engine actually came out of a 500E! Allow me to explain. The seller was located in Ireland and could not readily tell me the miles on the motor. When I turned up to view the engine he then explained properly / further that he had purchased a 500E Sedan from Germany (In need of restoration) and when the car arrived he noted the engine was a w140 119.970, not a w124 specific 119.974. Therefore he wanted to install a 124.036 specific motor - and purchased another engine from Germany to go into his car. Hence that is why the mileage of my "new" motor is unknown.

I did bring my trusty borescope with me and pulled all 8 Spark plugs. My brother then turned the crank with a wrench as I went into view each cylinder in turn and could see the full bore. All bores were immaculate / perfect condition. Very nice inspection - forgot to take screenshots at that time but I will do it again!

Because he had removed this 119.970 motor from his 500E he had also removed the lower sump pan and intake manifold. One cam cover was also loose. So we were able to inspect inside the crankcase and one bank of cams. Again, all looked nice and clean and a well cared for motor. To me it is certainly not got the appearance of a high mileage motor. Possibly quite low miles but as described - there is no way to tell.

Therein lies the reason for this particular thread :pc1:

I have mail ordered this Plastigauge material:

I am thinking of pulling 1 or more main bearing caps and Conrod Big End caps and measuring the bearing wear. These are the relevant WIS docs linked below:

Conrod bolts torque:

Conrod details:

https://mbwis.net/en/doc/49005079

Crankshaft Details:
https://mbwis.net/en/doc/49005507

Am I correct in thinking that I should see a reading of between 0.021 - 0.090mm wear on the crank main bearings? And what about Con Rod bearings? (I can't see a spec for them)

Are there any other measuring methods I must employ - like the ones detailed in WIS. Or is Plastigauge AOK for purposes of checking this used motors health? I may consider a new set of bearing shells for the engine if wear is "high"

Note also that I do not intend to pull the heads or tear this motor down. So any measurements will be done with the crank in situ. Which is why Plastgauge will lend itself to that perfectly IMO.

Worst case I would pull the crank - leaving pistons in and heads on. Have the crank checked / polished (if there are marks on it) and new main and big end bearings installed.

IF the 2 or 3 bearing shells pulled pass visual inspection and Plastigauge I will be leaving it alone and get ready for install with all new usual sundries.
