R129 SL 72 AMG (M120 7-liter engine specs)

Re: R129 SL 72 AMG

There is much confusion about these engines around. Alot of figures are made by wild guessings and assumptions. Fueld by "experts" ...
According to the parts lists of amg, the 72 and 73 have the same bore and stroke. The 7.0 was available as lh and me engine. The 7.2 and later called 7.3 (with the same bore and stroke) only as me. As just written in the German exotenforum, the car there is not a 7.2 it's a 7.0 as written in the documents.
That means originally it is a 6.0 liter there is more to do to get a 7,2 liter.
0,20/12=0,0167 ml. That is nothing on 12 Zylinders, it’s just a drop more on each piston. I’m been driving a s600 6.0 liter coupe this is same engine. There is a difference of 1,2 more Liter. 1,2/12=0,100 ml that means a bit more on each piston,
Probably they just mill pockets or turn the head of the piston.
But this will reduces the compression ratio. Which is stressless run of engine.
What are the experts telling about this, am I on a wrong track with this calculation?’

Eh... is that a "Guard" / Special Protection car? The windows look like standard thickness to me.

Wrong size tires do not make it a Guard.

Photo of armored windows below, from this thread. However that armored S600 is a conversion of a USA-spec 140, and I'm not sure if the factory armored glass is the same.

The IG car may be a legit Sonderschutz but it's hard to tell from the one photo of the driver door.

The IG seller should add a photo like the ones below, but he likely will only do so for a "real buyer".

I'm not familiar with armored Mercs, what is special about the tyres compared to standard? Is it due to the weight of the vehicle?
I believe the tyres are both rated for the substantially higher weight, and also have some amount of projectile resistance or deflation protection, so the car can't be easily stopped by simply shooting out the tires. I don't know details though. I believe the wheels may be different as well but I'm not sure.

:doof:

What about the layout of the sticker, as opposed to the other?
The numbers are a tiny bit smaller than the letters. Most obvious in M120 E73 SO.

I can't imagine AMG being this inaccurate. Looks unprofessional.

Edit: What do these abbreviations stand for?

KEY FACTS

  • A rare and very powerful 1990s open-top performance icon, this R129-generation Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG is understood to be one of just 150 examples built, powered by a mighty 7.1-litre V12 engine.
  • It is equipped with a naturally aspirated 7.1-litre V12, delivering around 496PS to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission.
  • First registered in Japan in June 1997, this left-hand-drive SL was later imported to Dubai and the Netherlands, and it is now located in Germany, where it is registered and ‘taxes paid’.
  • It has now been with the seller for four years.
  • The odometer indicates 119,138 km, though this is not warranted.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This R129-era SL70 AMG is finished in the timeless shade of Polar White with either a matching hard-top or a contrasting black soft-top roof, over a black and grey leather-trimmed interior, featuring contrasting stitching, and swathes of wood veneer trim.
  • It rides on a set of 18-inch AMG five-spoke split-rim alloy wheels, framing silver brake callipers, and fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
  • Equipment includes xenon headlights, a colour-matched body kit, uprated suspension, a sports exhaust system, cruise control, electrically adjustable dampers, a Mercedes-Benz-branded cassette stereo, automatic climate control, and electrically adjustable heated seats with three-position memory.
  • The car is accompanied by a spare wheel, a warning triangle, its original owner’s manuals in a black leather wallet, the service booklet, registration documents, and a file of maintenance invoices.
  • Two new keys are included in the sale, as well as the two old keys (which were replaced due to being faulty).
CONDITION

  • Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
  • Specific notes from the seller include: some minor seat bolster creasing in the cabin, and the front passenger-side area of the car was resprayed in 2019.
  • The most recent TÜV test was in April 2025, which resulted in a clean pass.
SERVICE HISTORY

  • The last maintenance was carried out in March 2025 at an indicated 118,924 km by Oldtimer Garage Süderholm, which consisted of an engine oil and filter change and a new oil pan gasket being fitted.
  • In September 2024, at an indicated 118,887 km, technicians at Oldtimer Garage Süderholm replaced the hydraulic hoses in both wheel wells, replaced both front nitrogen accumulators, fitted a new hydraulic oil reservoir, replaced both front strut mounts and bump stops, and changed the brake fluid.
  • In October 2022, at an indicated 118,585 km, technicians at Grüning Automobile KG (GmbH & Co.) changed the brake fluid, renewed the coolant, fitted new dust filters, replaced the right-hand headlight washer wiper motor, fitted a new fan belt, installed a new fuel pump and filter, and replaced the front adaptive damping system level control unit.
  • Other notable maintenance includes the windshield washer reservoir being replaced in June 2019 by Simon Motorsport, Dubai; the front passenger corner being repainted, new oil pressure and oil level sensors fitted, and a ceramic coating applied in October 2019 by Simon Motorsport, Dubai; and an engine refresh being carried out at a cost of around €13,000 in April 2021.
SUMMARY

This R129-generation Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG represents an exceptionally rare slice of 1990s performance motoring. A true flagship convertible, it combines elegant design with a thunderous 7.1-litre V12 engine and AMG pedigree. With a desirable factory specification and a timeless colour scheme, this powerful roadster would make a compelling addition to any modern classic collection or enthusiast’s garage.

Less than an hour to go. 241 and counting.

Weird comment by *sirmathrocks: The one letter from M.Eisele says that it was done at a company called MG Motorcabau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH".

This is just a misprint and/or wear and tear.
Correct is: "AMG Motorenbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH".

As in this document.

*sirmathrocks is on 126board. DM sent.
