Those are the upgrades I hope to do to my 500E one day myself. But finding that AMG stuff may be impossible. I did find a 6.0 AMG M119 motor available in England but it turned out the wrong type. (It had mechanical injection)

That w123 is amazing with the V8. I really like car’s that are sleeper’s, that one is epic!

Keep up the great work!

Diff is painted, waiting for the Motul oil filling and then to be installed during the next weeks. It is actually a factory reconditioned diff which is now assumable in its 3rd life. Talking about recycling...

Lovely work!!
Do you want to do my diff on the evo? i havent read to much about it yet..but i reckon since its the ASD diff..its abit more "complex?

Thx man, what is wrong with your evo diff? There was a special deal on diffs about a year ago I can check if they still have some left. They where cheaper or at least equal in price than a parts set for overhauling

it has tons of play in it...and you hear "clunk clunk" when selecting gear and releasing clutch..and do the same in revers...shifting the load..then you can provoke the play..and it makes sound...and there is also a tiny bit of "uuuuuuuuuuuh " sound in it..bearing sound..but not terrible..but the worst is the play in the gears..or plates..

but i cant afford a NEW one..thats out of the question.hehe

OK, of course the diff can be overhauled, the manual 16V diffs are generally noisier than automatic 16V. Also the LSD clutch packs will be worn out at about 150t km.
For the noise and play is mostly the front pinion drive bearing responsible. It has to handle most of the load/rotational speed and is the smallest one. To replace it you require the friction meter. Watch out if you can source a used one from an automatic car, sometimes they pop up for a reasonable price. Automatic car diff, because there is no driver influence on gear shift and the engine input is always cushioned by the torque converter which appreciates in a usually quiter/less play affected diffs.
The sell out price for these diffs was around 300 euro, that's why I got all 3 ranges as spare. 3.07,3.27 and 3.46. Parts for overhauling are more than that...

Small update will be done to the 500 within the next days. The Bi Xenon head light will be going out to a new owner (even so they work beautifully) and will be replaced with a factory new set of pre facelift lights. According to availability a new pre facelift bonnet and trunk lid will follow.
Just placed the AMG badges on the air filter housing (not bonded yet) and cut air inlets in the lower head light panels for the 6.0. The 6.0 is on its way to Germany too. Hopefully will arrive around September what means that I might start around my winter vacation to take the heads off and do a timing gear and heads refurbishment before it goes in the car. Found a company who did already cnc porting of the heads in- and exhaust manifold and strongly thinking about to do that as well.

Interesting - where is the company located, and did they do the porting for a 6L engine, or 5L?

:apl:

They are located in Germany, NG Motorsport, it's for the 6L engines.

https://youtu.be/N5MaJ1dzpJE

In their Facebook page is a video wherw they do exhaust manifold porting on a M119.

Also had some work on the SL, tires needed replacement. They where still the original ones and became to hard thus the whole drivability was screwed up. No traction on acceleration and heavy understeer while cornering.

fresh pics, 2.5L + 2x2.5L
And some photos of my new major longterm project, a real dtm racer which will undergo a complete restauration. I dismantled the car and as next step it will go into the acid bath to remove all old paint layers and then it will get a new kathodic primer in a bath like from factory whereof the new paint will be applied. The engine is a super rare Mercedes-Benz sport-technik aggregate(never run after its factory rebuild), the department was later taken over by AMG when Daimler Benz gave the racing engineering completely to AMG. The vehicle next to mine (2nd photo) is the actual championship winning car of season 92 which was converted to class 1(a) car for the season 93 until the real class 1 car built was completed. This car undergoes the same full rebuild process, it will be again as class 1(a) since the modifications to it are so extensive that it can not be brought back to 92 evo2 status. Remarkable is that the real class1 has again major differences to class 1(a). Anyhow my car will be running on complete 92 based homologation.
Funny side story, as you might have noticed: my evo1 is painted in the same color as the race car. The owner before the previous owner (understandable?) owned once both cars, he wanted to have two identical colored cars, one for the road and the other one for racing. Then he sold the car to the previous owner of whom I bought it from in 2008, the race car stayed with him since 93 but he never raced it and finally he sold it to a friend of mine who is one of the 16V/Evo/C Class DTM experts (Thorsten Stadler of Team Stadler Motorsport) as soon he knew about the car he contacted me last year and told me the story and offered the car to me. So both cars are reunited but they will not meet each other in the yellow colour anymore since the evo1 will become Blauschwarz again and the racer the correct color and livery.
If anyone is interested in 88/89 DTM front and rear axle including brakes, complete suspension with shock absorbers and w/o stabilizer bars please feel free to contact me via pm.

so you know that Stadler dude?
been recently getting to know about this "Team stadler "..shop...

Yes sure, quite well actually and since quite some time. My car was the first Road car equipped with the reproduction of the slide throttle system.

thats awesome!!! i dig that

been looking at that slide throttle system..and it looks soooo nice.i would very much like to maybe go that route at some point..most because of the "looks" ..actually..but functionality would be alot better to..
But i think..when getting the KE jetronic system up and running..and done the right things..it would be pretty reliable i guess..but it does require special maintenance these days because of the parts getting old..and been kinda neglected over the years..or not neglected in that sense..but..just wearing over time really..

Got these days the early 500E aka Evo II Brembo calipers delivered which I bought from Glen. Very clean condition, happy I got a set of these. Mostly these calipers need refurbishment of paint before installation not so these ones. They are a great addition to all W201 chassis and to shed off some unsprung mass of the Evo1 since it is equipped only with the cast iron equivalent and direct replacement. I got these installed on the Evo I and 2.5-16. Photo1: the calipers acquired from Glen
Photo2: 2.5-16
Photo3: Evo I

Weight of naked caliper without pads, pins and leaf spring 2.7kg

So back to the 124036, today is a lucky day since the engine/transmission finally arrived in Germany and my brother collected it from the shipper. Six point o - here we go :

awesome :) do you have some more pics of the front wheel wells on the evo1?the yellow one?im on the way to modify mine..and i would like to see some pics on how they are supposed to look.I even got the coolant reservoar changed..so need to either GET brackets for it..or make new ones

thank you :)

Sure, here you go, keep in mind that the actual wheel well is bigger, on the rear a area of the cabin is "hammered" will try to get some photos where you can see it. One photo shows the engine bay of my Evo2 (same layout on both evos) the other one shows a photo of my 2.5-16. The marked area is on the evos pressed to the inside to make more space for the wheels when turned in

NICE! Do you have the 6.0 LH module required for the conversion?

:drool5:

Yes sure, and a real 300km/h AMG speedo with adjusted drive for the 2.65diff.
The gearbox is also legit...

I just put my hands down for another vehicle driven by the M119 power plant. When everything is settled I will introduce it here of course. Sometimes things come up quick and unexpectedly

OK, all is done already-also this went quicker than expected.
Here she is, '92 SL500, first owner, 34t km only, accident and repainting free, black interior, Becker Mexico 2000 including sound system and cd changer, auxiliary heater, trip computer, full hydraulic suspension with ads, anti theft alarm, headlight washer, seat heaters, memory seats, double airbag, asr, remote keys, undershield etc pp. Actually pretty much everything which was available at this time. Since she was stored away for several years I have to clean her up and see where leaks will occur. Anyhow it was a very nice deal and I would have regretted for sure in case I let her pass.

Today was the first session for the reanimation of the R129. The engine was running in idle but as soon you wanted just a bit of throttle it either died instantly or stumbled heavily and then died. Therefore I purchased alot of maintenance parts before the weekend. Such as 32L engine oil and 4 oil filters for a thorough oil flush, transmission oil and filter+ converter and oil pan seal/seal ring, new fuel pumps, fuel filter, air filter, ac filter, spark plugs, convertible top hydraulic oil, ZHM oil and plenty rubber seals for the ads valve block as well all new seals for the soft-top cylinders. (the car developed a leak from the roof and ads hydraulic).
So today I changed the fuel pumps and fuel filter, engine oil with filter, spark plugs, ac filter and air filters. The engine stumble is gone, the M119 running super smooth.
Next will be ads leak fix, coolant and transmission oil change.

Had today some progress on the SL, fixed the oil leak of the front ads valve assembly, by replacing the 15 O rings of it. The leak came from one broken/fossilised one. After bleeding the system and keeping the car raised (looks like a off roader when manually lifted with detached control rods) to remove the front inner fender liners for a thorough wash of the engine bay, wheel wells and front underbody. As per owner lowman/Stefan preventive maintenance tips I checked the cable routing through the inner fender and found a damaged one due to some sharp edge in the cable port - so have a look while working in that area. Fixed it up by using some plastic tape and shrink hose. Further performed a second engine oil and filter change and unpacked the car cover for which I didn't pay alot of attention to before, surprisingly it's an original one in good condition. In the next days the seal kit for the roof cylinders and a set of stainless braided brake lines should arrive. Already thinking about further upgrades like 320mm or silver arrow brakes, 18" monoblocks or 17" 3-piece AMG's and a pano roof. Ah and yes, last but not least I surprised my wife yesterday with the SL (she didn't knew about it) as it will be her new weekend/joy car.

Hey guys, finally some update on the W124: started today to work on the 6 Liter M119 and got it almost completely dismantled only the crank is left in the block but will come out tomorrow morning. Then the heads will go for cnc porting and I will put the block after cleaning for the assembly on the engine stand. Also another warning, check out your inner V chain guide rails, especially the one of the right head. This one was also broken @ around 80k km!

Some more shots of today's work, crank is out too also there all OK. Will add some photos of it later the evening. Nevertheless did all con rod bearings indicate some wear, con rod and main journals on the crank are round and in spec. Will place the order for all parts tomorrow except the head gaskets, since I won't be able to install the heads within the next weeks. Also will dump the pistons into engine oil to dissolve the combustion residues. While dismantling the heads, I found the new, conical, single valve spring layout with the light tappet - will convert it as in my original engine to the "old" double spring/light tappet combo. Talked to Bernard these days to see what else other than the cnc porting could be done.

Looks nice! Any chance you could check the code numbers on the camshafts (see pics attached), and measure the cam lobes for intake & exhaust? I'm curious what you find for the lift measurements. If you could get measurements better than 0.05mm that would be great. Definitely would be nice to hear what Bernard recommends for tweaking the AMG 6L motor.

:v8:

Lovin the R129. and that AMG engine...super nice :)awesome work you are doing right there.cheers :deutscher::arnt:

Thanks guys, here the crank pics.
Will measure the lobes (base circle and lobe height) and the cam codes within the next days.

Will be done via Bernard. He and NG Motorsport developed the program for the M119 hence it goes only through him. NG is top notch

Ooooo. Just curious - what is the approximate cost? I think in the USA, only RENNtech had a CNC program for the M119 heads and they don't mess with any of these "old" cars anymore.

Did Bernard say anything about custom camshafts being worth the investment? He did a build on a 1992 engine years ago with custom/special cams, the engine made a bunch of power but the cams were crazy expensive. €4k or €5k, IIRC?

:spend:

Yeah it will be quite costly, he will inbox me a estimate these days with all options. I m only worried if it makes noticeable difference due to the issue of "non" tunable ecu's. He has currently some bigger intake valves with thinner stems and conical guides in development too. Rpm increase is possible but limited to currently 6700rpm but this would be more than sufficient for me (6500 and I would be happy without stressing the pistons too much). Let's see, also did the heads of my original engine myself and that turned out well. Did a manual porting also to the exhaust manifolds, see the old photo below. The gasket doesn't sit properly, in fact I opened the ports to the exact diameter of the gasket. Same to the exhaust manifold as well as on the intake side

Some more updates, collected today a set of pre-facelift tail lights, front indicators, trunk lid and bonnet. Here some before/after shots (lights only). Bonnet and lid have to be painted first.

Finished today the air intake panels, got a 5x3mm wire mesh which is already glossy black plastic coated for the grills. turned out nice I think.
Also started to reinstall the crank into the 6.0 block. Took all the measurements and got the bearing play into specs.

Thx Stefan!
So today I had a little back drop when installing the crank. Found hence I ordered the correct 2.25mm axial crank bearings, two sets of 2.30mm bearings in the correct packaging (for the 2.25mm) came instead. Went to the dealer again to complain. Ordered now all sets to check out the stuff. This frustrating experience made me to disconnect the pistons from the connecting rods for further cleaning and some playing with the precision paint scale. The rods are all pretty close together by only 1g total difference and paired at a total difference from the first connecting rod pin (cylinder 1+5) to the fourth (cylinder 4+8) of 1.1g only. The two middle pins are perfectly balanced. Clearly shows the attention given to these AMG engines while assembling.
Anyhow was then reconsidering also to give the crank and rods away to check straightness and to let them polish and fine balance the crank if necessary.

Some info about the installation of the lower head light panels. I kept the rubbers on the lower head lights in place only cut the area of the grill free. This leaves the head light wiper motor mostly protected from the elements and also covers all areas which might be visible due to the grey colored housing of the head light.

So, happy new year and the first day or let's say afternoon of the first day I did something useful on the SL. I noticed that the suspension got stiffer and stiffer after a couple of weeks driving it around occasionally. This was a clear sign that the suspension spheres lost some of the nitrogen filling which was to be expected anyhow. So changed all 4 of them together with the front strut bump stops and protection covers which had been totally gone. After bleeding the ADS the car is back and rides better than ever. Dusted off the engine a bit too and called it a day.

Some little 6.0 update, the company where I dropped the crank and rods for cleaning, polishing, straightening and fine balancing (with master weights according to piston (incl. Rings, wrist pin, circlips) and rod (incl. Bearings, screws) weights) finished the job. For reference here is the costs, about 1100euros. Spec sheet is available on pick up. Will post it later.

Today was a good day for the e500e part of my life since 1st: during a phone call my brother told me unexpectedly that he removed all side cladding, side skirts and bumpers, dismantled them and currently preparing the parts for re-spray in original contrast color alto-grey 7700 (back to stock pre-facelift style) and 2nd: the new and original E60 AMG stabiliser bar arrived from Japan. Very happy to have one finally - still want a rear Feind bar badly.
