To say 8 thousand miles on these would be generous. New rotors, shields, and (Doduco?) caps at that time. Happened with no warning. I now have a new found appreciation for duel distributors. Four operating cylinders kept me off the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Oh well. Time to add a set in the traveling spares kit. I don’t recall anyone here agreeing on a replacement with consistent quality?

Yikes! That is scary - never seen a "side blowout" like that before.

For rotors, the only ones I'd recommend are OE / Genuine MB, which are made by Doduco. Second choice would be Bosch rotors. I wouldn't install any other brand of rotors.

BTW - for extended driving on 4 cylinders, I'd disconnect the 4 injectors for the dead cylinders... this will prevent raw fuel from being dumped into the catalyst. Shouldn't be a big deal for a short trip to get home, but I wouldn't want to risk it for a long trip. The engine runs surprisingly smooth on 4 cylinders once RPM's are up, btw. (Don't ask how I know.)

Yes, a 5000 pound (W140) 70 hp, V4 😄 Had to drive about 60 miles to a secure place without further issues.
I do remember when I unboxed them they didn’t appear as robust as the Bosh they were replacing. From what I can see, the conductor is assembled from 2 or 3 pieces and it separated. The rest is history. I assume there’s nothing to do but put new in, cross my fingers, and go? No battery disconnect time or code resetting?

Correct, it's a straightforward R&R, no need to disconnect the battery. However, there are likely fault codes stored on the EZL (pin 17) and possibly the DM (pin 19) which you would want to clear, so they don't cause confusion at some point in the future.

I've had the rotor bolts back out and destroy things, so I like to add a SMALL dab of blue threadlock on the rotor bolts when installing. However, this is optional and definitely not required.

Thanks GSXR. And Btw, for the few uninitiated here. In EVERY instance I’ve tried to save money on parts for this car, they were crap right out of the box or failed in short order. Much aggravation and a sad state of affaires.
Buy once, cry once.

I guess we need to move Bremi off the safe list down to the inconsistent list.
 
Bremi rotors were never good. I had one fail after just 30 miles of driving a few years back, with no apparent physical damage whatsoever.

They aren’t just cheaply made.. they are visibly poorly designed when compared with OE. I’d never touch anything “Bremi”again.
