Speakers in rear door armrests

Hi,
On this pic of the rear seats of an estate w124, we can see in the door armrests a grill with loud speakers.
I was curious to know if anyone had installed such speakers in his E 500 and if it had improved the sound of the Bose system.
Alexis

I'm not sure if you can retrofit these into a sedan, but at best it would affect the sound for the rear passengers a bit. The stock rear speakers are VERY good in the 500E/E500, there's really no need to mess with them. If you want better sound from the front seats, spend the money on Jehnerts, or some other custom front door panels...

:spend:

I have a 124 wagon and recently replaced both rear door speakers, due to them being blown and/or damaged by my kids. Bottom line is that the rear 124 wagon door panels and handles/speaker enclosures CANNOT be retrofitted to the sedan ... they are of a totally different shape because of the design difference between the rear doors of the two models.

Furthermore, the rear speakers of the stock E500E are FAR superior to the chintzy, flimsy rear door speakers of the 124 wagon. (Which are not cheap, by the way ... I think I paid around USD $80 for each speaker). Dave is correct that the speakers really only benefit the rear seat passengers in the wagon; they only provide very modest sound imaging for the front seat occupants of the wagon. Again, the setup of the sedans and coupes is FAR superior in terms of sound quality and imaging than the wagon speaker setup. And ... there are no speakers in the "very back" of the wagon, so no sound firing forward from the cargo area. Hmmm.. that sparks a thought ... perhaps a single center sub in the rear hatch carpeted panel of the wagon... ;)

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry, remember how its done in my 500E?
All from Jehnert... Excellent sound. Very clear, veeeeery loud and still clear at high volume levels.

You have Jehnerts? I thought you said you had Jelmerts !

Hilarious!!! And of course, yes to the center hatch sub, Gerry. Without the "prison wall" between the boot and the cabin, which these 500E's have, getting bass to the listener won't be near as much of a hassle and will probably sound MUCH better.

Cheers,

maw
