Struts or accumulator?

I just bought a 1992 500E, pretty decent shape except a very pronounced clunking over bumps from the right rear. Maybe a strut? Also the SLS oil tank has been leaking for some time...related? Not sure whether to change out the strut and deleting the SLS or??? Help!

PS. My Emaill is pmcd02@gmail.com. Thanks

Thumping from the right rear definitely sounds like a strut. I had mine replaced a little while ago and you could definitely see the deterioration of the bushing on the right side.

Here is a very detailed how-to which shows all the part numbers you will need for the struct replacement.

If I remember correctly, struts from MB, which are made by Sachs, are a little more expensive than the ones directly from Sachs. However the two models have different Sachs internal part numbers so there might be a difference between them, but I don't think it's been proved here that there is a difference.

While you are replacing the struts, you might as well also replace the accumulator spheres and the SLS reservoir and filter. Getting the reservoir and filter together is only a little more expensive than just the filter. For the spheres, unlike the struts I think it has been established that the ones directly from Mercedes are the same as the aftermarket/OEM spheres; which if I remember correctly are made by Febi Corteco (except that the Febi Corteco ones are cheaper).

Keep the SLS system. You'll be happy when you use the car for a trip or to carry 4 people.

like mentioned above...the spheres will not make any sounds..apart from just a harsher bumpier ride.
The bottom bushing in the strut though..that will make sound if its worn.
Alot of other stuff in the rear suspension can make sound when worn out...

not only bouncy ride from back but also it can raise rear of a car

Its pretty expensive to replace the struts/hydraulic cylinder just because the bushing is shot. If the hydraulic cylinder is not leaking you can repair the bushing. I just posted a write up on this. Here is the link.

If I am breaking a rule posting a link to another site, just let me know and I will take this down. I am not trying to cause a problem; just solve one. :)

It's fine to post links to other sites or link to photos posted elsewhere. So you are welcome to do that.

The main issue is that the "signal to noise ratio" at Banzworld is much worse than many other Benz related sites, meaning that there is a lot of just plain bad information posted at Banzworld by self-proclaimed "experts" there. Particularly in the 126 forum, and I've seen a fair bit in the 124 forum as well (pertaining to the E500E particularly) by some of the "regulars" there like Q*baert.

So with Banzworld in particular I just caution people to be on guard for bad information relating to the E500E and 126 coupes.
