Guys,

I want to replace the 2 pieces of weatherstripping on my 1994 420e. I cannot seem to find proceedure and pics via this group? Anyone done it- is it possible without R&R the roof itself?

Part numbers? Digging for useful information.

Sincerely,

Michael

Sunroof weatherstrip is a single piece. It pulls out of a groove, new one pushes in. New gaskets are VERY tight and it can take many months for the new gasket to settle in. No need to touch anything else on the sunroof.

Any hints- by very tight... ? Hard to get in the channel? Dave, I'm guessing you've done this on a few cars- is it easier the second time?

Also, (don't mean to hijack) what type of grease is used to lubricate the chanels/rails ? Is there a MB special type ?

Yes the MB Gleitpaste. Dave has documented it on his web site. Try to get a small amount from your shop instead of buying the big MB tub.

You can also search for Gleitpaste on this site.

Michael, I've only replaced one seal, years ago, because it was damaged. They rarely need replacement. I recall it being a pain to get the new one fully seated, but otherwise it was straightforward. Experiment on a P+P car first.

As Gerry said, only Gleitpaste on the rails & mechanism, and clean off the old lube first. If the sunroof is very slow, you can disassemble the entire thing to clean & lubricate it, and replace any damaged felt pads.

:banana2:

I have a tub and could send you a dollop of it in the mail, just PM me your address. I will be back in Houston on Tuesday evening so could mail it out Tuesday night.

I'm good on lube. I just do it at a tech session and use the shops.
I purchased some garage door lube which look the same.. found it at ace.

U will tape the sun roof, then adjust if needed. It is not slow.

My 500e the deflector Hong sqeeks.

So Dave if it takes months for the seal to settle I shouldn't use the sunroof for a few months?

Nah, I just found the sunroof did not always seat in the fully closed position for a few months, I had to double-check it after use. After the break-in, it was fine. Dunno if my experience was the norm or the exception, not many people replace this gasket.

:scratchchin:

Ok I will see what happens in my case.

I am wondering if I have not set the seal all the way. It was hard to get it in and I loosened the rails to get it all the way in.
