Temporary Fix for Center Console Veneer

My center console veneer has been slowly cracking over the past few years and I thought I would experiment with a temporary fix. I ordered a roll of mahogany vinyl wrap from Amazon for $20. It is self-adhesive wrap and according to the ad it will peel off easily if I want to remove it. After removing all the switch frames on the back, I laid out the center console on a piece of vinyl and did some measuring. The width of the piece slowly increases from back to front. The cutting was done with an Exacto knife. I cut the main vinyl on a piece of cardboard using a straight edge and was surprised that it was nearly a perfect fit on the first attempt. Once I peeled the adhesive backing off and applied it to the console, I cut each individual hole, first from the bottom, just tracing the perimeter of the hole, then following up with any imperfections using a new Exacto blade from the top. I used new blades for every hole so it cut like a hot knife through butter.

I didn't quite match the original color this time, but now that I know this wrap can be easily applied and will peel off easily I'll look for a better match. I can still see that the veneer is cracking from underneath but I think it does look much nicer with the vinyl wrap versus the faded veneer that was starting to gradually chip off. We'll see how it does this summer under the Arizona sun.

Interesting and thanks for posting.

My centre console had some minor chipping on the rearmost edge. I took it to my antique restorer friend who I have known for >30 years and he wasn't sure what he could do - he obviously can't wrap a 17th Century dining table...

He was able to colour it to make it blend in a little.

At first glance it looks ok but any close inspection would reveal the chips.

Overall, I'm happy with the outcome as there seems to be a lot of different shades to the veneer colouring which would be difficult to match or source matching replacements.
