Hi guys

i recently dropped the transmission on my brothers 500 bc i finally figured the hard shifting problem. It had super smooth 2-3 transition but very hard 1-2 and 3-4. I was inspired by a friend who had 2-3 flare on his 500 and thought that previous owner must have turned the modulator adjustment to camuflage the flare on my brothers car. So i have now the clutch K1 on the table to inspect whats up there and first thing i noticed is the gap between C spring/clip and the first steel plate is around 2.6mm - twice more than max. Friction plates are in range between 1.4-1.8 so that will be replaced. But i have some doubts about the steels. I think those should not be reused bc of burn marks.

B1 brake band looks very nice and also the front pump/reverse piston has no signs of collision with K1 drum.

Can you guys confirm?

I'd replace the steels in the K1 pack shown-

Are you going to replace all the soft-seals with the tranmission out?

I sure hope so. All external seals / O-rings / gaskets should be replaced. Very easy on the bench, miserable in the car. Don't forget the selector shaft seal...

:banana1:

This transmission leaks no fluid so i focus on the K1 to cure the flare issue :) Front pump seals and the reverse plates were replaced few years ago and there are no other complaints than violent shifting. I hope this K1 rebuild will make big difference :) Its time for shopping now :D or maybe :( because steel plates at the dealer are crazy expensive :P

When you buy the steels, buy the other two snap rings you don't have. I think there are 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0mm snap rings to get the clearance right, that will keep you from having to order the one you need that you usually won't have. They are usually very cheap. The steel kits usually only come with one thickness steel, so it never really works out that you have the same stack up that came out unless you order them from MB in the thickness you want ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$).

The steels that i got from the K1 drum were
1x4.5mm
2x4mm
2x3.5mm
1x2mm

The last one (2mm) is deformed. I planed to order the same thicknesses i took out of the drum but i can not find 3.5 anywhere. I ordered aftermarket plates
1x5mm
1x4mm
1x2mm

The 3.5 i will have to make. I planed to take the burnt 4s and ask a machine shop to precisely machine it on both sides to get 3.5. I know its not like a 500E should be serviced but its just a steel plate :P If it wont work i will think about the dealer ;)

I know there is more adjustment with the snap rings. Original one is 2.5. I will first pack everything i have and then see what else needs to be done.

Samiam i ordered Allomatic friction plates from a shop where they use it while they rebuild transmissions. I found Borg Warner at a different store and im not sure will it make a difference? Should i not use Allomatic?

Hi guys

so i installed the transmission i partially rebuilt and i turned the modulator cc by 180* and im in heven. I have never experienced such smooth shifts. All transitions are barely noticible. To add some more good stuff at the same time i replaced the timing chain and changed the spark plug gap to 1.0mm and i regret even more that i sold this car :( It idles now almost as smooth as M120 and shifts gears like a 722.6 :)
