Those are not present on USA-spec cars. Any chance it's something related to stationary heating, if fitted on your car? I assume you have a Euro-spec 500E?

Is this the valve you are talking about? My Euro 500E has it. A black & red trace vacuum line goes to the motor and a black with silver trace disappears under the fuse box somewhere. I wish I could be more specific but the lines are well wrapped up / hidden.

The one by the strut tower may be related to the E/S switch next to the gearshift.

The other line, going to a sensor/bracket at the front of the engine, I've never seen before on a W124.

UPDATE: The widget at the front of the engine is the manifold pressure sensor used on 119.98x engines (1996-1999) with ME injection. This would not be used on any W124. My guess is the engine is not original and may be a .98x motor converted to LH / W124, and they left the sensor+bracket on there.

Any ideas where the black and red line goes?

My euro spec 500E has the original engine and I also have this check valve but both lines are disconnected. I found the black and red line loose by the EZL and don’t know where it goes…

UPDATE: I just realized that the “unknown” vacuum valve switch is related to the E/S switch by the gear shift and that’s why it’s not present on US Spec cars.

Two years ago I replaced the Bowden cable assy with a new one. However, I got the wrong part number and bought a US spec Bowden cable assy and installed it without knowing it was the wrong part number.

I connected a vacuum line (green) and later found the other vacuum line (red / black) loose by the EZL. This is the line that should be connected from the vacuum switch valve to the Bowden cable but since I purchased the wrong Bowden cable assy I didn’t connect it and left it unplugged. I later removed the line and also unplugged it from the switch valve (see pic).

Today, after reading some threads regarding the E/S I remember that the unplugged part of the vacuum switch valve would hiss when the engine was running and figured my gear shift had been on “E” this whole time!

I just switched it to “S” and the hiss stopped confirming that that vacuum switch valve is in fact related to the E/S.
