W124 Pedestrian Windshield Inquiry

Folks, Just picked up my 94 E320 from the body shop after having the roof resprayed due to rust blisters. Roof looks great but shop cracked the windshield when reinstalling the passenger side metal trim piece. Its a 3" X 3" V shaped crack at the bottom of the glass next to the A pillar. Not that noticeable and not in my field of view.
The only factory windshield left is at a dealer in CA and I'm in upstate NY. Part, 124 670 33 01 64, is NLA.

Any recommendation on non factory brands?

Peter Weissman

Peter, did a live person at a dealership confirm permanent NLA on the windshield part number? Not just an online website showing NLA?

🤯

Yes Dave they did. They termed it 'out of stock with no units expected' or something similar. They put an order in for me but said don't expect to see it.
I'm working PT at the dealer in the valet transportation Dept. so I know the MB parts guys are competent. Multi franchise dealership--MB, BMW, Mini, Maserati, Alfa, Honda and Sprinter.

Regards,

Peter

Did it degrade that quickly? We have installed a few new ones recently... I know they make proper "tear offs" for windshields now... I may need to dig harder into that.

I’ve been trying to source a front windshield for a couple months now with no stock from
Germany or local dealers. When this recently happened with the rear glass for the 500E/E500 they did a “restock” and I was able to get a couple of them despite many thinking they’d gone NLA.

Guys, Here's an update on my windshield replacement. Some info. may be useful to other posters.

Part 124 670 33 01 has been superseded to 124 670 33 01 64 meaning a new supplier. In this case however its a new distributor. PPG is out and Mygrant is the new distributor. Mygrant is a private company with warehouses across the country.

Mygrant will no longer ship individual windshields ( was a $300 upcharge) if the nearest warehouse is out of stock. That's what happened to me. However you can go in person to pick up the glass as a COD purchase. Just need a purchase order which any MB dealer can provide or your glass installer if they have an account with Mygrant. In my case I had a choice of traveling to the Bronx or Brooklyn ( 1 piece in each warehouse). That's about a 2 3/4 hr trip each way.

Someone suggested Safelite ( 25 minute trip) . Same COD deal but I didn't need a purchase order. Picked it up this morning and carefully drove it to the glass installer. I would not trust Safelite to have a knowledgeable tech to do the install. Cost was $350.

Glass is manufactured by Fuyao USA, a major glass company based in China. They supply both OE and the after market. If I bought from Mygrant it would also have been Fuyao glass.

The Safelite glass did NOT have the bottom plastic channel which I bought from Summit Racing. Glass shop will glue it in place.

Glass suppliers/installers use their own part numbers. Called NAG. For my 94 E320 its FW740 and the plastic channel is WLMF 740.

Car goes to the shop on Monday. I'm going to pull off the plastic drains and wiper motor.

Regards,

Peter Weissman

I’d highly recommend you pull the outside side and top aluminum trim pieces off yourself. Check all the clips that hold on the pieces and replace clips and or rivets while in there.

Also pull the interior A pillar trim, sunvisors, overhead light assembly and the panel that they attach too along with the rear view mirror.

If my memory serves, from when I had to replace the windshield in my 91 300E 4matic, the mono wiper and motor has to be removed as well.
Can someone please confirm that, thanks.
