W124 Sedan MB Windshield

My friend recently bought a new Pilkington windshield for a UK version W124 E320 Wagon, not sure if it’s the same on a 036?

Dave, I have a Fuyao windshield on my 94 E320. It was installed maybe 6 months ago. No, there is no MB star on the glass. Made in the USA. My glass shop said the quality is good. FWIW Fuyao is I believe the largest auto glass manufacturer in the world. They have at least 1 factory in the US. They supply the replacement market and are an OE supplier to several car companies including BMW.

Regards,

Peter

Thanks for the intel, Peter! Did you buy the Fuyao glass from the dealer, or was it aftermarket? I assume aftermarket since there is no Star logo?

Dave, Not from the dealer or the MB glass distributor, Mygrant. The distributor had a windshield at their Bronx warehouse but would not transfer it to our area, Albany. I had the option to pick it up myself but I was worried about breakage and didn't know if it was OE or aftermarket. So I bought the Fuyao from Safelite who believe it or not had one in their Albany warehouse. I had to bring it to the glass shop myself as Safelite would not deliver it. Didn't come with the plastic channel which I purchased on line.

Regards,

Peter

That is pricey, but I have shallow pockets and can swear I lived thru the depression, but I didn't. I am living thru a depression right now, depressed that so many .036 parts are nla.

The Car Wizard bought a 1994 Dodge Viper, and he has a better chance of finding parts for his car....

For windshields, I do like the Mercedes star.
You can go to pick and pulls, find an oem glass, and have a guy pull one. They are crude, they use a guitar string to cut thru the old adhesive.

Interesting info Peter! I have the Fuyao windshield since 2018 and am not a big fan of it because of its perceptibility to sandblasting. Would love to get a Pilkington windshield….

I had new (aftermarket) glass installed on a car probably 10 years ago, and within a year or three it looked as sandblasted as the 20 year old original. I was not amused. I need to figure out which car it was, and check the brand of the glass. I had new glass put in the 210 years ago also, and IIRC that is still in decent shape, although it doesn't get driven much... will check that also.

EDIT 1: The W210 had a new PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works?) windshield installed in 2015 at 140kmi, currently 162kmi and still reasonably non-sandblasted.

EDIT 2: The W124 received new "FYG" glass in 2012 at 193kmi, which is - you guessed it - Fuyao. Sadly that car was totaled 1 year later at 203kmi. 😥 I *think* this was the glass that sandblasted very rapidly...?

Speaking about Facelift or pre-Facelift windshields?
Facelift was not available in Europe not long ago
Are pre-facelift windshields available in Europe? The ones that are COMM BLOCKED for USA are probably the facelift ones and are available again (?) #124 670 3301 64 and has a VIN window.

My car is an early one with no VIN window. No big deal that it isn't available...I will just spray over the window on the new one from the inside with black paint before they install... if I am ever able to get one that is ! I'm sure a Pilkington will work tho if MB doesn't straighten out the USA parts block.

For what it's worth if you have a glass claim and you're insured under Hagerty, they'll let you choose who does the work and the glass. I mention this because I got a couple of rock chips in the windshield of my CL600 a few weeks ago, and in discussions with Hagerty about how to handle the claim, they pretty much told me to find someone to do the work with my preferred materials and submit the bill for reimbursement.

I have "Fuyao" (or whatever they are) windshields in the 2008 ML550 and 2003 E320. Both, as new, out of the box, look like they're sandblasted when you look through them in direct bright sunlight. The techs that installed them said they're fine, but I griped enough about the one in the ML550 that they came by and polished it with some cerium oxide. Made little difference, the windshields are still garbage.

Next time I'm going with OE or Pilkington. That will definitely be the case with the CL600.
