1992 500 E rear windshield removal

Hello again , need to remove the rear windshield so I call a mobile glass man and came over he say the I need to remove the inside side panels and head rest panel and a total of 500.00 dollars to remove and install with no guarantee if the glass will brake , can I get your opinion about it , thank you .
 
I would say the chances of removing the rear window without breaking it at 10% The rear window trims are very tight and even is you get those out out without breaking the glass you then need to cut the glass out.

The exterior trim is removable, but it might pinch the glass and break the glass. If you remove the trim you could have it re anodized (factory), ceramic coated, or painted.

I removed the rear glass for the same reason and although I went to a very experienced installer, the window broke, as the trim is indeed super tight, as Jeff says. Note that the rear window trim pieces are the only anodized trim pieces still available for the w124, so you might want to consider getting them new vs. painting them.

Hello I change all of them in 1997 because they fade away and it happen again , they don't last , they turn a light gold color , thanks .
 
Interesting thread. Did anyone have issues reinstalling the rear windscreen trim with the new glass? I am about to get this job done (new rear screen going in) but absolutely do not want the rear windscreen trims damaged or bent as I believe all or some are NLA.

I recently had my rear screen replaced, in order that a genuine OE glass be fitted rather than the existing one (which had the widely spaced heater wires rather than the OE narrowly spaced). It was done by one of our national windscreen replacement companies (who also sourced the glass for me), and it was done under my insurance at a total cost to me of £70 (the excess on the policy). No removal of any rear quarter panels or headrest panel, and the old glass came out unbroken. I still have it!

Are you 100% sure about that? How did they connected the heater then? I don't think it can be done without removing the C pillar trim...

The short answer is "I don't know"! I'm doing some work on the car tomorrow, and will have a look at the electrical connections to the heating element - and as to whether I think a new screen can be connected without removing the "C" pillar trim. There may be others here with more experience that can verify this either way. I didn't witness the fitment of the new screen, but examination of the completed work showed no evidence of removal of the trims (usually broken clips!).

However, I can say with totally confidence that the headrest panel/hat shelf was not, and definitely does not need, removing. Anyone who has done this will know that it's no 5 minute job, requiring removal of the back seats and the headrests themselves. If any screen fitter thinks in error this is necessary, then obviously their labour charge is going to reflect this.
 
For the faded to bronze trim, I carefully applied electrician's tape over it. Gives the trim a nice, satin finish, gets rid of the gold color, and has lasted for years. Don't stretch while applying.

100% agree, however C pillar panels must be removed in my opinion - heating element does not have plug or spade connector but eyelet and is simply bolted on. No way to put screwdriver there as far as I can remember. Anyway, worth of checking, however I'm sure you know already if rear defrost works or not.
