Wheel Spacers?

I've had my 92 500E for nine years and it had wheel spacers when I bought it. Wheel to body proportions seemed correct compared to other 500s I see on this site, so I assumed the spacers came from the factory. Recently replaced tires and the tire shop would not touch the car because they said the spacers on the rear wheels are non-original. But the local MB dealer had no problem mounting new tires, balance and alignment. My question is were the 500s built with wheel spacers? Any info is appreciated.

Wheel spacers were never, ever used from the factory. Mercedes require special hubcentric spacers. It is surprising that a tire shop would refuse to work on the car, spacers are a pretty common item.
