• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

SOLD 1993 500E, 36kmi, Pearl Black/Black, BaT auction (Bluffton, SC)

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

I sold my mint 500E with 30,000 miles for $58,000 earlier this year

So there have been *2* 500Es in FL with under 35K miles and one person has seen both inside of a year!?! Wow. I've seen at least 25 in person and only saw one under 75K (it was at 63K). As Rod Stewart sings, "Some guys have all the luck'

Nope...just the standard T02 alert at this outpost. Would recommend increase of the Trollcon rediness to level 4. And request Mathew Broderick put on standby. That is all.
As a renowned and recognized troll in the Benz world myself, my own Troll senses are highly sensitive and tuned to even sophisticated trolling. I hadn't detected anything seriously afoot with this thread.

Then I saw our member "500Eboard" (who never posts) get engaged on the thread. When that guy rears his ugly head, you just KNOW there's something going on. So, we'll have to watch this carefully.......and increase the Trollcon level upward by one stage.

Indeed, Honch. I'm thinking maybe a tiny ratchet up in threat level awareness, but nothing seems to have come unhinged at this precise point in time. I kind of figured that the 500Eboard overload would chime in once the discussion devolved into the "You guys are obviously too poor to willingly overpay for this car" routine...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

Yes , I agree I got a little involved in this thread because of some opinions made by some members in this forum without ever seeing the car. Comments became personal and many non fact based which brings me back to my reasoning why I never posted comments in the first place and should not have posted comments here. That was one of the reasons I stopped posting on germancarsforsaleblog.com
I used to be a great fanatic of 500E's even though I never participated in any forums or any Mercedes Clubs. As a matter of fact there were 3 people I knew (myself included) in Miami that had W124 500E's with under 38k miles and all three of us were not involved in any clubs or forums and were also not registered here. Not everyone wants to post what they have and not everyone wants to be part of a group or club.
With all that said, yes I have seen and driven 3 low mile 500'E in less than one year, as well as many other rare cars, because as you all probably know, Miami has a very large rare and exotic car culture. You loose count as to the amount of Ferraris and Bentleys you see on a daily basis and Porsches are almost like VW's. Yes, we are very lucky here, if you like cars. Someone in my building even has a Koenigsegg.
As to the comment made about having money to be able to buy the desirable cars, my point was that it's all a matter of perspective, and maybe I have become, as many people in Miami, numb to rare and high priced cars, boats, and real estate. Again, its a matter of perpective. You give a homeless person $50k cash and he will think he won the lottery. You give a wealthy person $50k cash, he will probably buy a watch.
We all know where we fit in that range but it's not right to impose one's mentality on someone else, when we dont even have all the facts or the same perception about things.
This 500E will sell to the right buyer for the right price and it will not be up to any of us, unless of course we are a buyer, which we are not.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

I hope the car sets a new high-water sales mark for a US-based 500E. And if it does, I also hope the buyer does his due diligence on this car BEFORE he/she buys it, not AFTER. I would hate for someone to get suckered by a dishonest dealer misrepresenting the car's condition.

That is honestly one of the primary reasons this site exists - to help buyers make educated buying decisions if they want to get into the market. There are few enough of these cars out there that we have data and history on a goodly number of them. Not all, but after 15 years of tracking them, really we do have good data on the vast majority of them, including wrecked/scrapped examples.

This site is a web forum -- not a group, not a club. We don't have bylaws here. We do have rules and implied etiquette that is part of the culture. And we have had a few individuals come on here and ignore them or push them. One of the big "no-nos" here is when a seller comes on here and misrepresents a vehicle or refuses to acknowledge the obvious.

I remember the Hatch & Sons Spruce Green 500E that had 8,000 miles on it, that was being sold back in 2008 for an exhorbitant sum. This was the car that was originally owned by Al Unser Jr. I think they were asking the then-exhorbitant price of $40 to $60K (depending on the day) for the car. They marketed this car as 100% perfect, needing NOTHING, time-machine car, etc. No better car out there, yadda.

http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200

http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=268

A good friend of mine in Houston (and a very wealthy CEO Benz collector) was interested enough in the car to send his private Benz mechanic to Hatch to personally inspect the car. His mechanic came back with nearly 100 photos of all aspects of the car. Al sent me the photos with no judgement or comment, and asked me to look at them and let him know what I thought about the car.

After careful perusal, I was completely WTF?!? with the car. The undercarriage and lower-paint on the car looked like the car had been driven 40-50K miles, not 8K. Yet Hatch marketed the car as 100% perfect and needing nothing. The misrepresentation was pretty stark, and they had the balls to ask then-top-dollar for the car.

Then there was the documented 100K odometer rollback car, from Portland, as noted in this thread: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5630

There is no little to no quarter given for sellers on this forum who knowingly/deliberately mis/under-represent cars they are selling.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

Yes , I agree I got a little involved in this thread ... I used to be a great fanatic of 500E's ... Miami has a very large rare and exotic car culture. You loose count ... Yes, we are very lucky here, if you like cars.

Yes, audemars, I recognized early on the "Miami-ness" of your perspective, but I didn't point it out. I just didn't want to go there actually. I spend enough time in Miami to love the car and art scene, and generally the whole vibe there, especially what I'll call Old Havana. I also hate the preoccupation with money and the desperation for the appearance of money that goes on there. "Lucky" is being kind. It's a whole ethos of "Rare things are special, and the more money I pay for them the more special they are, and therefore the more special I am." Um... No. As you say, we all have our different perspectives, values and perspectives on value.

The reason I didn't bring any of that up is because none of it ... repeat, NONE OF IT... makes this the best low mileage 500E available in the market. Period. End of story. So I limited my comments to that narrow point. It's a demonstrably false statement, which was false when made, should not have been made -- much less defended -- and, like that. There's nothing wrong with making a u-turn after a mistake. "Actually, you guys are right. There are better ones out there, some of which aren't even listed here." No one would have argued with that. Mine was a pristine low-miler with documented provenance (the only E500E to run the One Lap of America Race), which was never publicly listed for sale. People here have sold E500Es in great condition between each other without listing them. Happens all the time. People get that.

But the "a thing is special because it has a high price tag on it and somebody will pay it" thing?

Nah, people here don't get that.

FWIW, this one (link) is still available and seems to be in Concours condition. It could be considered one of the nicest examples. Close to Jono too for a PPI comparison.

Just damn, Marcus! Your coverage of that particular materialist perversion is exquisite. And make no mistake, I love material, but it is so disheartening when you see it become a sickness. I once saw a review of a movie (not porn) that had some beautiful people involved in lots of heated erotic moments. The reviewer said something like, "This movie makes everything look sexy except sex"
I am always reminded of that quote whenever I encounter this thing you are talking about. It can make the most beautiful objects turn hideous...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

a licensed appraiser is completely hit/miss and I generally prefer to have a competent and experienced marque expert assess a car for me.

There are only a hand full of people that I would consider experts on E500E's and none of them are appraisers. Anyone can appraise a car but only an expert in the particular vehicle can give a valued assessment. A few online classes and presto, you're an auto appraiser. You too can become an automobile appraiser.

1993 Mercedes-Benz E Class - Web Special

Our 500E is a well-documented to owner example. It was sold new to a woman in San Francisco. She owned this car through 2009 where it was sold to a second owner in Miami, Florida. It has been lovingly cared for and maintained to the highest standards. Having only 32,000 miles, this 500E has been used sparingly. It's service history is well documented through Car Fax as well as copies of service invoices.
As with every car from Pedigree, this 500 he was thoroughly inspected prior to us putting it on the market.

To get this car ready for sale we performed:
  • Oil and filter change
  • Replace serpentine belt
  • Replace front rotors
  • Replace rear view mirror
  • Replace front shifter bushing
  • Replace all four tires
  • Wheel Allignment

This 500E is ready to be driven and enjoyed with enthusiasm and confidence.
We have the available service records scanned and are happy to email them out upon request. This is an incredibly well documented and well preserved example.

Included with the purchase of this car are:
  • Original keys with fobs
  • Original owners books including owners manual and stamped service book
  • Original floor mats
  • Trunk mat
  • First aid kit
  • Spare tire and wheel
  • Original sales brochure
  • Clean Car Fax
  • Available service documents.

Most 500E's on the market today have well over 100,000 miles on them. Many have been heavily modified and abused. Ours has only 32,000 miles and is believed to be all original in every respect. It has no modifications, and everything in it works exactly as it should. With so few of these cars having been produced and even fewer remaining, The 500E recognized as an up-and-coming classic. These cars are highly desirable and exceedingly rare. We encourage prospective buyers to personally inspect this impressive 500E.

At Pedigree Motorcars we show cars by appointment only. Contact Ken Baker at 561-866-1601 to arrange your showing of this very special car. Additional photos are available upon request.

I'd like to know the new price. Apparently the last dealer got tired of looking at it on their lot and wholesaled it.

DOH I think not!

I will be in Boca Sunday night, and will certainly visit Delray beach - my bride's old residence.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

Interesting what I just found out.
I knew this clean 500E would sell in the price range appraised by a reputable and professional classic car appraisal company, a not because of someone who thinks he knows W124 500E's.

The market spoke. Members in this forum should take note, that investors know more.
This 500E sold for almost $50,000. Perfect example of an old saying:

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

Lot No. 583

Auctioned on Saturday, April 1, 2017

Sold for $ 49,500

As discussed previously, some people are more interested in buying odometer readings, and don't really care about the condition of the car.

:watchdrama:

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

...and the best part?!?! The fellow who Bought the car is now aware of the condition And this thread.

Double plus, for the reminder of eternity anytime you search that VIN this thread will pop.

Winston was pretty keen judge of BS Mr Audemars...he'd see through you right quick.

There's one born every minute. In which case, yes Klink, April 1st it must be.

I'm glad that's a $50k car actually. And I'm still quite certain it's not the best available.

Cheers,

Yes, I can't get too upset about something I own actually going UP in value...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

There you go ! The right attitude to have. You all have very special cars and the market will pay if you do the upkeep with an open wallet, keep them mint, and keep the miles low.
As an investor, the money is made with confirmed low miles.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

We understand. I invest in lots of things, but not cars. Some things are more fun when money isn't the object.

This situation is like a lot of others to me. When you don't own a thing, you care about its "market value" because you're trying to acquire it. When you own a thing, you don't care so much about market value, because you already own it.

It's like other guys looking at your lady wondering what you had to do to get her. You're not thinking that.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

You hit the nail on the head with your comments, and it's exactly the point I've been trying to make all along.
For someone this was the ultimate lady, and for many true reasons, this was the price to pay to have her.
For having been at an auction and getting to $50k, there must have been a lot of men wanting the same lady!

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

interesting sale indeed....so a dealer in Miami, FL has this car for 6 months no sale.

Then another dealer 54 miles away in Del Rey Beach, FL goes to an auction and pays record amount in recent public history for the car...and pays the auction house juice, etc. for a car that had been sitting on a competitors lot not 55 miles away...?

Yes, very interesting. I'm a patient man, I'll await further history as it unfolds...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

I'm sure this car is going to end up in Russia or Germany, just like the one I had with low miles. They don't care about comments made by people on a foreign forum, since all of the 500E's there are the ones that have been extensively used on the Autobahn, and are very tired.
Low mile US models are extremely hard to get and have only reached 100 mph a few times in their lifetime. Also, with the high liquidity and more valuable currencies, they are able to pay top dollar and get a car that has had the cruise control on at 55 mph for 23 years.
That is why it's being advertised in a well know British website. The dealer selling it is actually very smart. He has a global vision.

On a separate note although off topic I would also like to hear anyone's opinion on the new Mobil 1 "annual protection" formula

Huh. The listing date is 4/27/2017. Maybe the previous sale on 4/1 did not consummate?

Or, did it sell for $49k USD on 4/1 and the new dealer is trying to flip it for £49 GBP?

Against everyone's expectation this car sold for USD $50,000 (I love it when I'm right as an investor).
Now it's being sold for USD $64,000 in Europe. Once again, that car will sell because it's worth all the money!

PT Barnum said "There's a sucker born every minute." I guess this car has found one already and is looking for its next. IMHO, like CDOs (Collateralized Debt Obligations), someone will be left holding the bag. Of course it was Thomas Tusser who is attributed with "A fool and his money are soon parted."

And, let's keep in mind that all of those fools left holding the CDO bag and being parted from their money were "investors" who thought they were right.

Moving on...

If this car is worth $64k then mine is worth $50k. Any takers?
