Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

Now it's being sold for USD $64,000 in Europe.
Unless I'm reading the ad incorrectly, the car is still located in Florida but is being ADVERTISED for sale in Europe.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

Seems odd all the way around. Guess we'll see if it's ever sold to a private party, or keeps getting passed around between dealers...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

I'm with gsxr,

Everybody on this site knows this car by now. This thread is really getting old.

Just sell the dam thing for real and quit puffing it up.

We are all waiting with "Baited Breath".

IMOP, we will never get a strait answer on this car OR a true selling price.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

first I saw the pictures I was like this car does not look like a 30kmi w124. then I saw those rust spots on battery place. even in pictures this car doesn't feel like a very low milage car. I feel like somebody washed whole parts in interior.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

Everyone ! This car sold for $50,000 at an auction with a lot of bidders. Get over it.

...to a dealer. IMO, that doesn't really count.

Now, if it sold to a private party, that's a different story.

From your lips to God's ears, Audie, I hope it's true. If the values really are going up that much, I may even be able to think of myself as an investor!

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

100+ mph hurts these cars? Who knew?

I guess that makes me a serial abuser...

Same here and I drive a 034 not even a 036 LOL! With my gear I'm turning less at 100 than most any other cars is a 75 in particular drive shaft and trans output speeds! Heck my Volvo V 90 has a 4:10 factory posie rear in it so--. Running 100MPH+ hurts these cars ?? Dumbest thing I have ever heard !

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

I agree.
There was a time a few years ago when if I wasn't cruising at over a 100MPH (160KPH) every time I drove my E500, it meant I was in a traffic jam.
Seemed to me that 200KPH was a nice cruising speed.......obviously not in the USA!

When I picked up my '92 in Zürich years ago, and drove back home through the Fatherland, I switched on the cruise control at 200 kph several times. Quite a special experience IMO.

It will be interesting to see where this one will sell, which is the bottom of the barrell for 500E’s in condition and mileage.
The top selling price was set recently for the 500E discussed in this thread.
Currently, the prices for several very high Mile 500E’s on Ebay are at the following levels:
$29k for 140k Miles
$28k for 133k Miles
$22k for 149k Miles
$28k for 126k Miles
$22k for 171k Miles
If these sell at those levels, the ultra high or ultra low mile 500E’s, should go even higher.

While I appreciate your efforts to use a marketplace such as eBay to justify your asking price (set aside the condition of your car which has been detailed with pictures in Jono's posts), at least tick the box for Sold listings and share those prices.

Never mind. I just took a snapshot to save you the trouble and pasted it below. How does this impact your pricing?

Lastly, using eBay as a reference is like considering someone who watched every season of E.R. and/or House to be your physician. The contributing board members here are much more educated on these cars, their market value, and are not influenced by words and phrases in descriptions like "Rare," "Built by Porsche," etc.

It drives me to the crazy when people insinuate that mileage is directly proportional to price. That confirms what I've mentioned previously, some people love buying odometers with low readings, and don't really care about the car. Which is ridiculous, outside the tiny world of collectors who all feel the same way. I swear, these folks should just buy and sell the instrument cluster, it would save the hassle of shipping, storing, and insuring the entire vehicle.

Out in the real world, the overall condition of a car generally dictates the value... with unusually high or low odometer readings adjusting the value slightly either down or up, respectively. I've seen more than one car with an odometer reading in the 60-80kmi range that looked like it had 200k of hard daily use; and conversely some 200k cars that look like they have <100k on them with light use.

As always, beauty - and price/value - is in the eye of the beer holder.

I think what's really happening here, is that the FREE internet has given you access to a conversation you would never be invited into in real life. And MONEY wouldn't help with that access. That seems to be the real annoyance here, on all sides. This poor car just got caught in the middle of that malaise.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

For a car that has definitely, positively, sold... it's odd that both websites still show the dealer has it listed as "for sale".

:watchdrama:

their web site guy is a bit slow seen that many times before plus sometimes they keep sold car listed sp when people call they try to switch into "better" not that that will work for someone who is looking to spend $50K on 500E

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Miami, FL)

Indeed. My brother has been a respected national private dealer for over 20 years. Over those years I have met quite a few "dealers" who bid up their own cars, trade, swap, use and sell other dealers cars, and will use any combination of shenanigans to build false value or make a sale. A particular car changing hands between dealers means nothing to me. I find the fact that none of the 300+ informed members who have read this thread have agreed that the car in question is worth the money being asked says all.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

While I agree the price on this particular car is inflated there is no denying that mileage affects price. A well preserved and maintained low mile car will always be worth more than a well preserved maintained high mile car. It all depends on what your intentions for the vehicle. I have two cars with over 200,000 miles that I drive regularly and one with 72,000 that is driven sparingly. There is no denying the 72k 500E is worth at least twice the value of the 200k E500 even though both cars have been maintained. The car in question here appears to be in sub par condition for the miles and will require a lot of work to get anywhere near the stated value. I almost purchased a 37k mile car from the MBCC a few years ago. I was right there ready to write the check but after sleeping on it I decided the color and few other deferred maintainence items were not to my liking. That car was in much better condition than this car and the price was similar. For me the low mileage was not enough to overcome the other factors.

Yikes - this is the infamous Florida 500E that Jono inspected and much discussion was had about it:

[Admin edit: Merged threads on same car.]

1993 MERCEDES-BENZ 500E

This example was purchased by its first owner on July 29th 1993 at Claridge's Ltd in Fremont, California. It would spend the next 16 years in Northern California, and in 2009 the car would move on to its second owner in Florida. Today the car has covered only 32,829 miles and service records from 2003 till 2017 verify mileage, along with its clean CarFax.

Since its arrival at Canepa the 500E has undergone a complete mechanical inspection and service, as well as our signature concours level detail. Now is the time to buy one of these quickly ascending super-sedans, and this low mileage example is the perfect vehicle to satisfy your need for elegant, understated speed for four.

Complete with books, sales brochure, and service record

Merged threads on same car.

I hope prospective buyers review the photos in posts 56-60 before forking over $100k for this particular 036.

BTW, I believe the price is a dyslexic typo. They probably meant $98,500. I expect in 6 months Hatch will have it listed at $120k, while the car is still looking for its 'forever home'...

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black / Black, 33kmi, $60k (Delray Beach, FL)

"as well as our signature concours level detail"

So hitting the undercarriage with a pressure washer constitutes concours level??

If that's concours level, I'm going to Pebble Beach. Or Disneyland.

they still didn't fix the epoxy primer on the trunk latch...

They did do a nice job of taking the photos so you can't REALLY see the damage. Good on the photog for being cognizant and aware of what they Shouldn't show!!

If who ever Does buy this thing doesn't do a VIN search before hand I feel bad for them...but then again, I'm just nit picky and bitter so Whatever... :jono:

Gerry,

We need a "crack pipe" emoji / smiley added to the site...

True. But I'm not mad. All other asset prices are through any non-crack-smoking roof. So why not these?

When the bubble bursts...

I'll be sitting here with my dry powder. Until then... we need a Cuban cigar smoking emoji.

;-D

As I have always mentioned, this proves once again that collectors pay for mileage and that this car IS a very nice example, hence having sold in April for $50k, a few months later for $60k, and now Canepa at $90.
It also shows that the big collector money doesn’t care about the opinions made by a car mechanic in Georgia or uninformed opinions on this website.
Prices paid are REAL and opinions made are nothing but hot air.

Let me get this straight. A "collector who has lot-so money" buys a car that has been "publicly" identified by a known pro merc merchanic and shop owner as having issues, is still OK with buying it because they are a collector? As if they can't bring themselves to admit that it has issues, but because it has low mileage it must be worth the asking price? Low mileage does not equal high price in all cases. While there may be some uninformed opinions on any automobile enthusiast website, I have found that the majority of the contributors on this website are quite well informed as a whole. Your posts strike me as someone who is uninformed or has a different agenda than most who frequent this fine forum.

Viewed from a different perspective, the buyers get the car and then [within a very short period of time, few weeks/months] decide to re-sell it rather than keep it. Or, it's being passed from dealer to dealer. Neither is a particularly good scenario.
