There's no HOW-TO thread that I'm aware of, for diff R&R. The FSM has the basic procedure. It's not complicated, but isn't easy due to the size and weight of the diff (something like 90 lbs?). This can be done in your garage with floor jacks, a second person is recommended when lowering / raising the diff into place. A good impact wrench will help with the axle outer nut & inner bolts. Don't strip the XZN heads of the inner bolts or you'll be in a world of hurt. And don't damage the ASR sensor wires, the sensors are NLA.
I don't think there's a HOW-TO for the driveshaft carrier/bearing, few people attempt this because it requires removing the entire exhaust system, which is nightmare fuel if you don't have a full size lift so you can walk around underneath the car. Once the driveshaft is out of the car, the job isn't too difficult, although you may need to fabricate some tools, or buy an appropriate bearing puller to get the bearing off the shaft.
The design of the rear subframe and the diff attachment on the W126 is VERY different from the W124, so any HOW-TO relating to the W126 is not going to be applicable to W124 vehicles.
I did do a HOW-TO for the driveshaft carrier/bearing on my W126, back when I lived in Texas. This HOW-TO **is** applicable to the W124, generally speaking, but that site (as said previously) is down for a bit for a very thorough technical re-vamp with no ETA as of yet for coming back on-line.
Well that is true Honch, I did not think it all the way thru - I made the false assumption on the fly that the transmission was very similar and wrongly, applied some connection to the diffy.
