Is the stock audio speakers on a 500E known to be more than adequate? Mine sounds really good (have an aftermarket Kenwood) and was wondering if it was upgraded or I just got used to driving a 996GT3 and it’s known for crappy “Don’t worry about it you just need to listen to the engine” sound.

Depending upon how recent is the Kenwood, there's a good chance door and dash speakers were done at the same time. IIRC Kenwood does good 4" coax and 5.25" slim fit door speakers which I would have used if I was upgrading the head unit because, why not? If the head unit has time correction, EQ and all that fun stuff, you can get pretty good sound out of it without going down a rabbit hole. But good (read, "not 30 year old") door and dash speakers would be useful if not necessary IMO.

You probably have aftermarket speakers. If someone fit an aftermarket Kenwood deck in your car, which came with the infamous/famous Becker BE1432, it is likely that they spent a lot of effort to fit that Kenwood because the the BE1432 has lots of proprietary wiring / main unit in the trunk / 2 amps in the trunk that may have been bypassed with aftermarket wiring. (test - does the fader wheel work?)

If someone went through all that effort, they probably fit aftermarket speakers.

Another clue --- do you have the original MB phone? If so, turn it on. If you don't hear the "braaap" upon power-on, then someone has replaced the driver's side dual voice coil dash speaker with an aftermarket speaker.
