Codes 048 and 054

My 1992 500E has been going into limp-mode and now the CEL is on. Took it to my trusted local shop and after scanning, pulled the following codes: 054 and 048.

They recommended replacing the throttle body (000-141-7925). Is this the first logical step to repair?

Just checked the DTC List W124 M119:
Code 054 possible cause is: EA/CC/ISC Actuator (M16/1) Test Step/Remedy 23=>2.0 - 10.0
Code 048 possible cause is: Reference potentiometer (M16/1r1) Test Step/Remedy 23=>2.0, 3.0

I don't have access to the WIS. Can anyone please provide these procedures? Or shed some light on what these remedies are? Thanks!

Those codes seem to point to the ETA as the likely culprit. What is the date code on your existing ETA? If it is old/original, you will probably need to replace it.

WIS procedure attached, however it's pretty much useless if you don't have the breakout box that allows checking the specified pins for the required voltages. You may be able to see SOME of this info via SDS live data however... if you are that serious into diagnostics, I'd highly recommend shelling out for the SDS kit (click here for details; specifically you use the HHT-Win program within the SDS).

samiam had a good idea in a different post; if you have a spare E-GAS module, it's worth swapping that out for grins.

Also - what are the codes from the DM which are triggering the CEL? Codes 048/054 are digital codes from the E-GAS module specifically. There will be separate, different codes on the DM (likely based on the ETA/E-GAS faults).

Don't despair - you do have options.

You can find spare ETAs on eBay and even perhaps from a seller here on the forum. W140 ETAs from 5-liter (and I believe 4.2-liter) cars will work just fine (as long as the donor car had/has ASR), although the connecting cable is a bit longer than the W124 ETA cable because of the larger W140 engine bay and different cable routing.

You do have to make sure you get the correct (early/pancake vs. late/round) connector for the ETA, as well. They are sometimes for sale here on the forum.

The main thing is getting an ETA that is date code 1999 or newer (the newer the better), so that it has non-biodegradeable wiring inside of it).

Cheers,
Gerry

I'm presently in the process of replacing the ETA myself with a rebuilt unit from a forum member. It's not a difficult job. I understand Beckman can rebuild yours as well for around $ There are good comprehensive threads on the process here with part no.s for all the vacuum hoses which should be changed as well.
