E50 AMG

Hi there,

I'm interested in buying a W210 E50 AMG, but I want to make sure it's a genuine E50 AMG with the correct engine, rather than just a lookalike. I've come across some conflicting information in various forums—some say the engine should be an M119.980, others say it should be an M119.985, and a few mention that both engines were used in the E50 AMG. I'm a bit lost with all this, so if anyone could help clarify with all of this, I'd really appreciate it.

Additionally, does anyone know if the transmission in the E420 is different from the one in the E50 AMG?

Here’s the VIN for the car: WDB2100721A193219

The say 957 Also he is an E 50 .The Engine Nummer is beginn i mean with 99,,,,,,,.(New Motor Num Cirkle).
And the Oil Intake is not over the cams,it over the Cain mor in Front.and the Air intake is on Both side may the same as other own 036.
The normal e420 has one big intake on the right side.earlies e50 has ASR maybe up to end of96 and 97 has ESP .The Gearbox ECU has an specivic num .
and the Diff has 3,06 the 420 has 2,82
und alle haben einen Tacho mit amg Sing und v/max 280
Brakes are also diff.420 has 4 Caliper Piston the e50 has only 2Caliper Piston.
The Rest is your Investigative Reason .good look

I'm quite sure that the car is not an E420, but what I do wanna know if M119.980 is the correct engine code for the E50 AMG or not?

Also, if E50 and E420 transmissions are interchangeable and if they do have any differences in terms of the transmission?

Yes, M119.980 is correct for the E50 engine.

Transmission may have minor differences (if any?) but the TCU (computer) is completely different.

210.072 = E420 (119.985/722.625)
210.072 + 957 = E50 (119.980/722.627)

Although I see some silly errors in EPC that some VINs apparently show an E50 with M117 and M111. Even 722.3/5 transmissions. Someone must've have been hitting the wrong keys.
According to the VIN provided that is in fact an E50. I would double check the engine serial number to see if it matches.

137 E50s in the 189/586 color combo you're looking at.

Is the transmission bad and you're wanting to swap one from an E420?

Thank you so much for the detailed answer.

I do have a few more questions: Which VIN decoder would you recommend that also shows the chassis number (210.072)? Also, is there a way to access information about production numbers you provided? and yeah, I'm considering buying a spare transmission for the E50 if it's interchangeable with the 420 one and by interchangeable I mean that if they're exactly the same.

The above decoder is the go-to for any Mercedes not just by a particular chassis.

I had done some production research for the 210 chassis and don't know of any site/forum that has this info available.

If shipping is an option it might be worth considering at least if you can find an E50 being parted out first

Why buy a spare transmission? These aren't common failures, and are relatively easy / inexpensive to rebuild. I'd want to rebuild the original, numbers-matching transmission in the E50 if needed in the future (assuming the serial number matches the datacard).

I interpreted it as the car already having a bad transmission. To gsxr's point, the 722.6 isn't a common failure in fact quite robust as with the engine. I personally wouldn't go out of my way to buy the transmission in case the original fails. Besides it'd be better to rebuild the original than to replace with one from an E420.

I also own a w210 E50. Next time i get my car up on lifts, I will have a look at the engine number and report back.
