I finally had time to install the new gears and put the cluster back in the car. I will report back after I've gone through a tank or two of fuel.

I am currently at the Garagistic site. Just want to make sure I am ordering the correctly.
I ended up selecting the flowing gears individually, and the total came out to $40.
E1 = 12
E2 = 48x12
E3 = 48x17

They have a kit of 3 gears for W126/W124/W107 KM cars for a total of $17.

Am I missing something here?
Yep, I ordered from Garagastic.

And if your gears are original, do yourself a favor and give your cluster a good cleaning by tearing it down, cleaning the insides out and lubricating(Gleitpaste is your friend) the new gears as preventative MX. The rheostat spring gets quite dirty as well, maybe paint your needles. If you want to refresh the case, SEM plastic paint in Landau Black is a good choice. This is a good winter project (along with tumbler)

I've just gone through my first full tank of fuel since the odometer gear replacement. This tank was mostly my standard commute which includes some stop and go morning and afternoon traffic, plus 60 to 80 MPH bursts. There was also a good 100 miles of no traffic highway driving. Anyway, as expected MPG is back to normal, if not a little better, at 18.1.

Great Glen! Let us know when you do a longer highway tour without much braking if you can get back to the 22-24 mpg (summer) standard that I was used to with this car - just curious. Winter was more between 20 and 22mpg

Well as of today, I have owned this car for 4 years! Hard to believe how fast time goes by. Here are some fun numbers.
As of the 14th of January, I have:
- filled the tank 107 times
- driven 32,506 miles (this includes the incorrect mileage from when the odometer gears were broken)
- average MPG: 16.6 MPG (this includes the incorrect MPG from when the odometer gears were broken)
- total gallons of gasoline consumed: 1978.95
- average price per gallon: $3.22
- total spent on fuel: $6402.45

Mileage as of this moment:

As my daily driver, it continues to run great and has never let me down. With all the rain we've had this past week, I'm reminded why I love MB's so much. Even in bad weather they just feel so safe and confidence inspiring!

Hi Glen

you sound like me now (:-)...I was never let down by her as well! Thanks for keeping her in such fantastic shape! 620k is not far! You can ask the HQ in NJ already to prepare the badge and papers.....

My tune-up reminder came up so I installed new plugs, distributor caps and rotors. With about 30,000 miles, the plugs looked a bit worn out but the caps and rotors didn't look too bad. Still, the engine does feel snappier with fresh ignition parts!

Oh, I also installed a new serpentine belt.

Today, the high miler crossed 615,000 miles. As I chase down 1 million kilometers (621,371 miles, should arrive late this year) the car continues to run great and makes a wonderful daily driver. [emoji3]

Mercedes acknowledges 1 million km at 625,000 miles so I won't be getting my grill badge until next spring.

Congrats Glen,

That's quite an accomplishment.

"High Mileage" Something us old timers need to think about. Keep it running as long as you can.

Take Care

I got a quote from a guy in Del Mar that was recommended by the shop that painted my car but he didn't seem to want the job. I was trying to connect with a guy that KarlC recommended but our schedules never sync'd up...so, I still haven't had the hail damage repaired.

Hit 620,000 this evening! Car is still running great making my daily 40 mile commute as enjoyable as a daily commute can be. Since my last update, I’ve had to replace the driver-side rear window regulator and put some new tires on.

For tires I settled on Conti DWS06 to replace the old DW tires. So far I think they’re great, easily as good or better than the DW. Anyway...

Fully warmed up after a 30 minute drive. Note that it’s a cool night. On hot days it drops down to about 1. Don’t worry as long as it goes to 3 by 1500 to 1800 RPM.

Is that a cold idle or hot idle? My oil press is around 1 or even dips slightly below 1 on hot idle.

The sender does get worn out, easy replacement with a 12mm stubby IIRC and don't forget the washer sold separately. Also a good time to review the lower harness and the oil level sender which is known to be a leaker with BBQ O ring. When I replaced mine, it went from yours hot to Glenn's hot.

Good to know. Appreciate the info. How long is the sender and the o-ring known to last? I know one of the PO's Doug (DW SD) on this forum has done most if not all of these things less than 5 years and maybe 30k miles ago.

You should be good if so. Much depends on the oil weight used and how hot it is at idle. If she comes right up at 1000 rpm, no issue. The fist bump on the dash could work too, especially if the rpm look off lol.

Oil pressure spikes up as soon as I touch the gas.

Congrats Glen,

That's quite an accomplishment. Time to collect the million kilometer badge.

It could be a long time before you hit the million mile badge. At 10K average per year it could be 37 to 38 years from now. You'l be an old man like me.

On second thought take the million kilometer badge.

Take Care

I just came back from a longer Germany stay for family reasons.

Super Glen, the old Lady did it with your (substantial!) help. :thankyou1:

If you seriously consider shipping to Germany I can help with contacts (I just shipped my W211 Kombi over)

She made it to 1Mkm easily and continues to run great. I just put in new engine air filters, replaced the headlight switch, and put in a new windshield wiper insert. Ready for a San Diego winter [emoji13]

Ugh...
Been losing coolant over the last few weeks. At first it was going down very slowly and I didn't see any tell tale signs under the car. But in the last week, I'm seeing a small puddle on the garage floor within minutes after parking it. Other than the coolant loss, it's been running great and engine temps are normal. So, I finally had time to investigate over the weekend and what I found is that it's dripping from the water pump weep tube. :|

So, it looks like I need to replace the water pump. Will be ordering one this week and installing it when time permits...

NEEEEEED HOW-TO !!!

:gsxracer:

Bummer! But, at least it didn't turn out to be something really unpleasant like head gaskets. :)

Are you going to get an OE remanufactured pump, or aftermarket? Also, will you replace the front crank seal while you're in there (easy access) or was that already replaced?

:sawzall:

Yep, counting my blessings.
I was planning to go with an aftermarket pump from AutohausAZ...they have Grafs for under $80. The front seal isn't leaking as near as I can tell but maybe I should replace it???
