For future reference re: KE-Jet mixture adjustment:
Yes, a 3mm hex key (long stem) is inserted down into the vertical tower atop the fuel metering unit, between the air intake and the fuel distributor. US cars had a ball-bearing inserted into this tower so that folks couldn't mess around with it. 30+ years on, most US cars have had this ball-bearing removed by zealous techs who think that adjusting the mixture is the answer to all running ills.
When inserting a key into this adjustment screw, DO NOT PRESS DOWN or it will mess up the sensitive hardware inside the mixture adjustment. Adjustment should be in 1/8 of a turn increments, right to richen the mixture, left to lean it out.
In fact, honestly, the mixture adjustment really should ALMOST NEVER be needed. Adjusting mixture is a major Band-Aid to other ills with the KE-Jet system, such as fuel pressure between the upper and lower halves of the fuel distributor being out of sync.
I would only ever adjust the mixture as a very very last resort, and that only after a thorough diagnosis of the KE-Jet system by measuring fuel pressure on both halves of the system, adjusting EHA (if needed), and so forth. If a tech says that a simple mixture adjustment is needed with this 3mm hex key, they do not know what they are talking about, and you should run for the hills to someone who knows how to actually diagnose and work on these systems.
You will only see KE-Jet last used on 1991 W126 models (M103 and M116/M117), and 1991-1992 R129 300SL (early M104) and 500SL (M119.96x) models.
