Not sure if this is one of Gerry's $5k deferred maintenance items, but it may be on cars that have spent time in the Northeast part of the US of A.

As you can see in the pics mine was pretty rusty, I didn't want to spring a leak, so out it came.

Pretty easy job, had to remove the fan shroud (upper and lower), undo the connections at either end of the hard pipe, collect the few ounces of trans fluid that drained out of the bottom connection, then thread the new hard pipe up from the bottom of the car, tighten the two connections using two new crush washers at the top connection, put back the fan shroud, and all done.

I had 2 issues....my lower fan shroud has a broken piece where it connects to the upper shroud. It is on the drivers side where there are 2 connectors, and the other one is ok so I don't think it's a problem.

The other issue was with the 2 clamps that hold the pipe to the chassis along the bottom edge. I ordered part #916016012202. These clamps were too small, so I just re-used the old ones.

The trans cooler line part # is 1242704996
The copper crush washers are part # 007603014106 x 2

Well I have a new set of motor mounts staring at me from the garage just waiting for me to install them.....that ought to knock another $1k or so off the list....

that ought to knock another $1k or so off the list....
But remember, Andy, that the $5K is perpetual ... it never goes away. Meaning that you knock $1,500 off with motor mounts and transmission cooler line, and it gets replaced with other stuff.

It's a little-known adjunct to the law. "It's **never** over"

For clamps, you can measure the OD of the tube and use ADEL clamps. They come in 1/16 of an inch. In most locations, the only change is to increase the hole size for the bolt/stud. MB uses 6mm, most holes are sized for 5mm. You can get them in steel, but in most cases the aluminum ones are fine. My car was missing the brackets on the radiator, so I used NAS743's + adel clamps(MS219019WDG-XX).

Those clamps are for 12mm pipe and should be the correct size. Could be they sent you the wrong ones... look for a "12" marked on the metal part of the clamp.

Are there three transmission cooler lines? This thread mentions a left and a right cooler line

Left hose = 220-997-16-52 (previously 019-997-83-82, which is available aftermarket)
Right hose = 019-997-41-82

http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4534&highlight=cooler

This particular thread is referring to the metal pipe that runs across the bottom and up the right side tank of the radiator. The transmission cooler hose that comes off of the left side of the engine connects to it just underneath the fan shroud close to the center.

Greg,

There are indeed multiple hoses (five of them, in fact), and I'm sorry that the nomenclature has been a bit wishy-wash on this. The lines make a circuit from one side of the transmission, up to the ATF cooler portion at the radiator, and then back to the other side of the transmission.

Andy replaced the hose that goes across the front of the car under the radiator (I call this the "center hose"), and up to the top of the transmission oil cooler in the radiator. It attaches to the radiator at the banjo fitting. This is part umber 124 270 49 96. As far as I know, this "center" hose is only available from MB - not available on the aftermarket.

The 220 hose (with the spring around it) would be considered what I call the "left hose," and connects the aforementioned "center hose" to the line that comes along the driver's side of the transmission forward. This flexible rubber left hose is part number 220 997 16 52. This hose is available from both MB, and on the aftermarket. The current MB version of this hose does not have the spring around it, while the aftermarket version DOES have a spring around it.

The 019 "right" hose comes out of the bottom of the ATF cooler in the radiator, and connects the ATF cooler to the hard line that comes along the passenger side of the transmission forward. This flexible rubber right hose is part number 019 997 41 82. This hose is also available on the aftermarket.

The remaining two hoses are these hard lines that run forward along each side of the transmission.

The passenger side hard line is part number 124 270 65 96. The driver's side hard line is part number 124 270 53 96. As far as I know, neither of these hard lines are available on the aftermarket; they are only available from MB.

Here is the "left hose" (spring)

Here is the "right hose."

I hope this helps clarify things.

Cheers,
Gerry

Just to follow up on this Dave, the clamps do in fact have a "12" stamped on them, but are definitely smaller than the clamps that were on the car. Don't have side to side pics but these new clamps would not fit over the pipe or over the mounting screws.
