Late style crank damper on early m119?

I am going to swap the late 6 rib ancillaries and tensioner from my 1995 S500s original (bad) motor to the good 1992 production m119.970 I have.

The late style 6 rib crank pulley appears to be one piece. Is this directly interchangeable with the early style 2 part vibration damper?

The crank and dampers are not balanced as a unit are they?

I hope the 6 rib late style will just swap over to the 1992 motor.... anyone done this before or knows that there are no issues with it?

I don't know the answer about the balancer. I've wondered the same thing. I believe the 1-pc setup is lighter too. And with the 1-pc, you can R&R the water pump without pulling the balancer. You need a different center bolt+washer if you try this.

However, for the 6-rib conversion, don't forget to swap brackets... pretty sure the AC compressor bracket is different. And, make sure your timing cover has the mounting boss for the late-style belt tensioner. Very early engines did not have this.

🎱

Thanks Dave. My 1992 timing cover does have the boss for the late tensioner so that should be fine. And yes I will swap all 6 rib accessories and brackets over too.

I'll remove and test fit the late style damper this weekend and see if it is a direct fit - fingers crossed!

Years ago I poked through the EPC looking for differences, and IIRC, there were no other parts which appeared to change at the same time. In theory, the balancer MIGHT be interchangeable.

🤔

I did note that my 1992 replacement motor timing cover did have the boss for mounting the late style tensioner. This is good. And as Gixer said the side AC bracket is also specific to the laye style tensioner.

What I did also note is that the later timing cover / pully does not appear to have a crank position sensor

Oh yeah... that front crank sensor was only used for diagnostic equipment, it had no connection to the engine management computers.

It was discontinued as of facelift production. It can be deleted unless you plan to use it for something...

:pc1:

I hope i can help a little. Have do this on my Engine. You must drill one hole in the Valvecover and make new "Gewinde" for a 8mm Screw, Thats all.
But the big Difference is are the Mountingpoint for the Ac Kompressor. The are diff, You must fit a Bracket from a R129 SL500 maybe 92-93 with LH.This fits bolt on.But NLA((((.i have modifed my Bracket with Alu Welding and new holes on the right Position.
I think here in the Forum was an Thread "New Belt Tensioner fitted" There was the Partnumbers off al pices. The Krankdamper is Balancing for its self and you can fit in my opinion easyly

Thankyou for the information, much appreciated.

Yes I have 2no m119.970 engines. One 1995 production which was seized. And my replacement 1992 motor to which I am swapping all ancillaries over to from the later engine and 6 rib belt.

So I do already have the correct AC bracket

FWIW I checked my 1995 m119.970 late style AC bracket part number which is A1192363130. This allows using the late style automatic belt tensioner (along with the other parts needed!) The part number for this bracket in the thread mentioned in your post qouted differs from this casting number on my 1995 m119.970 engine.

Anyway - this part number I list is available used on ebay for cheap so I bought another spare one for future conversions.

I think you could still run an 8 rib belt by placing an appropriate sized washer / spacer behind the 6 rib tensioner pulley. My 500E has a new INA belt tensioner so if the time comes when that wears out then I'll convert it to late style tensioner.
