Pesky trans linkage bushing

Several years ago I managed to change the plastic shift linkage bushing on the trans end, without the special tool. Last week I felt the dreaded floppy shifter feeling once again. Jacked the car up today expecting to find the easy one, the one on the shifter end, gone. Nope. The one on the trans again. Even though I bought the tool to deal with my 124 diesel, I'm not going to do the trans end again. Will have a local shop do it with my tool. Just don't want to deal with it.

The one at the transmission IS the easy one! You remove the bracket from the tranny and replace the bushing on the workbench. Should be a single 10mm nut/bolt to remove, then wiggle the bracket off the selector shaft. That should allow it to drop low enough to pry off the spring clip on the rod. Piece of cake, compared to the one on the shift lever, above the driveshaft... that one is a real bugger.

:duck:

The tool really makes easy work of either one, I've found. One of the best tool purchases I've ever made for my MB tool collection.

Allgonquin, where in MD are you located?

I like Gerry's tool so much that I have been holding on to it for the last year. I have 1 more bushing to replace!

Ahhh...so you cross the Bay Bridge/50 quite regularly!!! We'll have to get together. I spend a lot of time in Annapolis/Edgewater, and will be there Monday and Tuesday of next week. My favorite German restaurant in the US is in the area, the Old Stein Inn.

I visited St. Michaels recently and enjoyed the Museum and lighthouse there. It was nice to see the "America" too -- and was gratifying to see my employer's (current holder of the America's Cup) blankets in the stowage compartments. Couple of photos of me at a Navy football game (Annapolis) some weeks back, and at the helm of the America in St. Michaels.

Cheers,
Gerry

Yep, I cross the Bay Bridge basically every day. Small world. I went on the America probably the day before or after you saw her, in early September. She was in my town (up the Chester River) for a day and we went out on her for a quick sail. I enjoyed talking to one crew member who had done a lot of sailing on his own boat and we had been to many of the same places. I had been aboard the first replica in Mallorca many years ago - she was owned by a Spanish guy at that time and absolutely perfect. I'll be in Annapolis next week if you want to grab a beer. Four Four 3 Nine 9 Four Fifteen Ninety-five.

Rgds,
Chris

Ok let me know. Tuesday can work. Otherwise I'll be back in town from Dec 16th.
