Can any help me were I can get a transmission rebuild kit can it be original from mercedes or does it not thx ley

Looking in ISPPI, there's only a gasket kit from Mercedes. Apparently, all other parts need to be purchased separately. Obviously Mercedes parts would be a #1 choice for a rebuild. There are aftermarket rebuild kits visible through Google

All the parts can be purchased through Mercedes, but it may cost a small fortune... you may want to look into having a transmission shop rebuild it, or see how much a dealer rebuilt unit costs.

The other option is buying an aftermarket rebuild kit which includes all the wear items and seals/gaskets, cost should be much lower, but I don't know what the quality is like. Very, very few people on this forum have attempted a transmission rebuild as DIY so you are kind of in uncharted waters here.

:pc1:

Leytrico I would be glad to send you the list of all the MB (OEM) tranny parts you need for a rebuild. It's about two pages of parts on a MB dealer invoice with part #'s, cost, etc.

I didn't DIY the tranny rebuild, but with the help of the parts manager at the local dealership, I bought all the tranny parts. Then I found the guy that use to rebuild trannies for the dealership.....he had since retired.....and he did the rebuild. Seems to me I spent maybe $1,000-$1,100 on the first group of parts. There were a few parts I purchased later, but they didn't total $100. Start a conversation with me and I'll give you what I have.

Post it here, if you don't mind, so that others who might need it can see it

Leytrico,

:welcome5: to the forum. I see your avatar appears to be 500E. Being on Gibraltar you must be very limited on MB specific work. It appears to be a very compact country/city. I was a tourist on Gibraltar last year and I always look for E500Es when on vacation but have yet to see one.

A couple of our members have been successful in a transmission rebuilds. Duh Vinci and JC220 may be able to provide you with input if you get your parts and decide to delve into it.

Have you checked for parts in Spain?

Good Luck

Take Care

If you want to rebuild the transmission there are master rebuild kits available which would include all new frictions etc. I have not used a master rebuilt kit before so cant comment on which brand to use.

What I have found before Is that when you take the transmission apart you will find most frictions will have little to no wear. The reverse clutches should be changed anyway and will likely be worn. But most others can be inspected and re-used. Indeed new aftermarket frictions can be thinner than MB clutches!!

Checking the clutch pack clearances and setting them accurate to spec is important and different spring clip thicknesses are available for MB. (Maybe some are NLA so check what you can get in that regard)

There are free PDF manuals available - ATSG is my favourite ones. These are on this forum just search and you'll find it. If you dont find it just let me know and I'll add them to this thread. (On my phone at present)

My advice in summary is-
  • You MUST have a very clean area to do this work.
  • Be very organised and methodical and take lots and lots of photos. You can never take enough photos!
  • Review my How To 722.3 re seal thread here for tips on resetting the pistons etc.
  • Take the trans apart first and visually inspect all frictions and metal discs for wear or damage. Check all spring clearances and compare values with the manual.
  • Then decide what you need to re-seal / rebuild. I suspect you will not need a full rebuild kit and just buy what you do need from a MB dealer
  • Be prepared to spend extra $$$ in tools and transmission assembly paste etc but you'll always have those.
  • Spend lots of time researching the rebuild. There will be you tube videos and forum threads. This will all help immeasurably
