Was inspecting a used 722.6 transmission I have today and noted the pan magnet was present and doing its job quite well!

Any new pan magnets I have bought recently from MB for the 722.3 have been plain or round IIRC.

These magnets pictured above lay flat and have a nice large surface area. Hence I have a couple pulled from spare trans pans and will start using them going forward on my servicing.

This trans was OK IMO just a higher mile unit and the 722.6 tend to get somewhat neglected due to confusion over required service intervals.

Will take pictures when I first get to put one of these later magnets into a 722.3

I got my magnets a few years ago (I bought 3-4 of them). I believe they had a 220 part number?

2202710098 is the part number, I believe. Only one I've ever gotten from MB. I keep a couple on the shelf.

Dan

Didnt think they were that cheap new! I must order some up :rugby:

I keep a few in the hoard... location within the 722.3 pan could be front or rear, I suppose:

I often wondered, what does that mean to have premium membership on BW? Do they pay a one off or annual fee and for what? Whats it for other than bragging rights in 036 URO OVP re-solder /Eco Junk/ parts cannon debates?

There's a private forum for members only (?) and you don't get ads. That's the only things I'm aware of that a membership brings. If there's more I'm not aware of it.

Dan

What Dan said. I think it mostly eliminates the highly annoying and prolific ads. I really need to get an ad blocker... Gerry, does the ad blocker for Win 3.1 work on Win 95?

I think nocfn, liviu, amg54, vdubpower, and luckymike may be lifetime members at BW. They would be well equipped to detail the benefits of said membership?

I think one benefit is that you get special "hang time" with the likes of moderators like Teutone, Dr. Grillz and Jayare, (and of course McLare) to get the benefit of their infinite wisdom about all things MB.

Yes, I am a premium member there. I joined BW in 2013, but can't remember what choices I had when I joined or why I chose premium membership vs. lifetime membership. Maybe I do have some benefits, frankly I don't even know what those are. Indeed, I do not get all kind of annoying ads like I get when I visit other forums (where I am not a member) after a Google search of something. After I paid the premium membership in 2013 on BW, I never had to pay anything else (so whatever I paid was a one-time deal). Private forum for members only? Never heard of it, but I am not active on BW anymore, unless there is something for sale that I want to buy.

Hang time, huh? Nice one @gerryvz , but not as nice as the "infinite wisdom" one. The wisdom one really cracked me up (and I am still laughing)! McLare is not active anymore since he sold his 126s, I have no idea who Jayare is, Dr. Grillz is more of a ghost (if he is still around anymore) and I think Teutone had some health problems so he is not so much involved anymore, at least on the 126 forum of it.

Overall BW 126 section is not even by far what it used to be. The posts used to have more technical quality, more "technical juice", now half of the questions asked there can be answered by googling while some answers are either wrong or incomplete and sometimes 'shooting in the dark" comes to my mind when I read them. There are very few people that really know the correct answers but they are not participating much lately, others post just to post, although they really have nothing to say. I don't see any drama or soap opera, so for me is boring. On the good side is that the political games are mostly gone because most of the members that were fueling them up are gone. I go there every day to see if there is something interesting. I read some posts and sometimes I shake my head in disbelief, other times I smile because I get amused. That's all there is, at least for me....

I have not been there in a long time because we have a C126 forum, Gerry, nocfn, Jono, and others that have forgotten more than I will ever know.

How true. BW is a shell of it's former self, and one of the things that I think did them in was the horrible transition to the new interface. That was handled poorly, in my opinion.

Jayare is a good friend and a neighbor of sorts, living not far away in Clearwater. Good guy, not an expert by any means, tries to do his best. He's also a guy in his 90s with some pretty significant health problems, too, not that anyone would know that. He "winters" in NC and when he's down here we usually meet and chat for a couple hours every month or two.

I use DuckDuckGo for my browser and have an adblocker in place, so I've never had issues with ads on the site. Hence my reasoning that paying to be a member was a waste of money. I figure the 5,000+ posts I've made are my payment for participating.

Jayare is one of the moderators on the Banzworld W124 group. Each forum on Banzworld has a different "sub-culture" depending on the specific members who frequent and dominate it, and the personality and efficacy of the moderators of that forum.

The 124 forum is MUCH better moderated than the 126 forum at BW.

Not sure why the transition that BW made from vBulletin 5.0 to XenForo was so bad / botched. I mean, we did the same transition here, and it basically is about the same. Took a little time for people to get used to things with the new software, but I don't hear people complaining. I've heard a lot of complaints about BW with the new software, so I'm not sure what they did that botched things up so badly. It's all a matter of configuring the base forum software, selecting appropriate add-ons, and so forth.

For me, it was all about future-proofing the technical foundation for this forum. The way things are right now, this forum can go for at least the next 5 years with ZERO changes (i.e. software updates). And the technology is future-proofed for at least the next 10 years. Someday, this forum is going to have to be handed off to someone to run (I've been working to get gsxr moved off of his Windows 2000/XP mentality and into more familiarity with Linux, so maybe he can take it over someday) and I want it to be in a good position so that the new owner/administrator doesn't have to do any technical heavy lifting.

Banzworld 126 forum seems to be following the same pattern as it has for many years. Good people come, contribute their expertise, either get shunned & insulted by the regulars or see that that forum is an exercise in futility and idiocy, and eventually leave for greener pastures. I've seen this repeated over many years now. Folks like Jono were among the first to see this and left many years ago. I got banned I think in 2010 for sparring with / making fun of the "establishment idiots" there because they continually pushed bad information and cockamamie stories. The moderators at BW 126 have always had a knack for favoring the most disruptive members, and banning and making an impossible atmosphere for those with actual goodness to contribute.

CLI ROCKS!!! :bnb:

Sorry, Gerry, I got carried away.

I think there were several things that caused the angst at BW:
  1. Global account resets (passwords)
  2. Lack of search functions, and later integration of such being poorly implemented
I din't recall if the password reset issue was related to the migration or not, I don't recall that it was. That caused a lot of people to bail, I know. Then when they migrated to XenForo they disabled search capabilities as a part of the migration. I can understand that they were trying to do things gradually, but for a good six months or more there were no search functions. Being able to search that site was critical to it's value. While one could easily use Google to do it, that's an extra lift for a lot of users who found it inconvenient, so they bailed or dropped off for some time.

The initial search function they had was global, so it was pretty well worthless. I don't know why they even bothered with it. I think that approach made things worse.

I don't post or look at BW any more, as I don't have time. I'll occasionally take a look at the "For Sale" forum, but more often than not it's just for grins. I still use BW as a reference, but that's pretty much all it will be for me in the future.

Dan

That's weird about the global password resets.

We didn't have to do that with this site, when we migrated. Your old password worked just fine. I beleive that you just had to formally log in for the first time, but you could use your old password as you wanted to. The passwords were encrypted and hashed.

They may have done this password reset as a security mechanism to force everyone to change their password.

The search function omission is a head-scratcher. That was a MAJOR goal of the migration on this site. vBulletin's "stock" search function was shite. I had a partial Band-Aid using Google Custom Search to index the site, but it was never that satisfactory.

XenForo's built-in search is far better than vBulletin's -- I know that was a prime directive for them from the get-go. With the addition of the ElasticSearch module from XenForo, it makes search light-years better, and super fast. And then with the "typeahead" ElasticSearch add-ons that I use, it enhances it even more and makes it more useful and returns more relevant results.

Not sure why BW couldn't have done that, but who am I to know?

W124 models never had a magnet in the transmission oilpan. It's something that folks add later on. No need to be concerned, particularly since your pan is clean.

That said, it's a cheap part to order, and easy to install at the time of transmission oil change.

I also bought a few of them and I'm thinking on putting 2 on the trans pan and other 2 on the engine oil pan... Any benefits on using them on the engine oil pan?

Well I didn't want to appear greedy :noevil: I'll order 4x more next week. I'll just keep them for my transmission servicing. My S430 didnt have one and my S600 + S320 are getting the transmissions serviced soon so they might use up 2x more in short order. Cheap items so may as well have a few on hand

You can pirate the magnets out of an old computer hard drive and stick them on the outside of the pan, They are thin and incredibly strong. And free! No waiting for trans service time. I always keep a few around for odd uses.

If you think about it, the transmission pan is dropped and cleaned out at each service.

Whereas the engine oil pan is not meant to be removed at each oil change. Sticking magnets to the oil pan could therefore build up Metallic sludge (if present!) On a certain area of the pan and if the magnet is disturbed, release it into the oil again.

A sump plug with inbuilt magnet is the best choice for the engine application, if desired. And at each service you can inspect and clean the magnet easily.
