w124 rear bumpers explained?

The other day I tried putting a 95 e320 rear bumper on my 500e. I knew it wouldn't look right because I know the tips flare out to match the flared fenders. But the bumper didn't fit at all because it hit the outter part of the batter box.

Well, my question is, would a 400e or e420 rear bumper bolt on to a 500e? I think it would because 400e's also have the battery in the rear of the trunk. Can anyone clear up rear bumper compatibility. Thanks

The 400E/E420 (.034) rear bumper is identical to the 300E/E320 (.032) rear bumper. If the E320 bumper didn't fit, the 400E/E420 bumper won't fit either. The battery box is lower in the 500E than it is in the 400E, to match the deeper spare tire well.

What color is your bumper? I am in need of a silver rear bumper and/or impact strip for a 94/95 sedan.
