YouTuber buys 500E (Video - Hoovies Garage)

The Wizard’s shop looks like an airplane hanger. From what cars he has in there he will tackle just about anything.

I’m not familiar with Tavarish seem like a knowledgeable guy. He tried to buy the 500E but Hoovie said he wanted to “KEEP IT”

Interesting

Yes Hoovie appears to want to keep his 500E and repair it. This is good

And Hoovie was acting quite strange in that entire video IMO, anyone else notice that? It seems he wasnt in good form or doesn't like contributing to someone else's channel or not being the centre of attention.

And Hoovie was acting quite strange in that entire video IMO

I think he may have been having one of his "I'm over my head" moments, seeing all the project cars he has lying around that garage in various states of disrepair, combined with "what the hell was I thinking" when he looks at ones like the Quattroporte or the 911.

Hoovy doesn't have an inkling as to the drubbing his wallet is going to take. So he is at ~$5K just to get a $10K car rolling again -- that's to a level of basic operational success. This is gonna be good. I hope he doesn't sell the car before he makes a video lamenting the day he bought this car. :alky:

That’s just to get it rolling again. Another $10K on top of that to get it reliable and take care of the niggling problems will be about right.

People think I’m being a troll with these $5K, $10K (and in the case of this car, $15K+) numbers.

I’m not.
This definitely applies to high-mile cars with a ton of deferred maintenance, which seems to fit this particular car. But even in his 2nd video, they agree $1k for radiator & ignition parts should get it running decently again. (And, it probably does *not* need all new ignition parts.)

We'll see if that is all that is required. I don't think these two simple fixes are the last we're going to hear about getting this thing "running decently again." ;-)

Yeah, I think it will require more, but I also think it could be under $5k for the minimum stuff. I also expect Hoover may end up at ~$10k when he's done. Depends how far he wants to go with a restoration vs just making it safe at vMax.

:gsxracer:

Remember that he's not doing the labour himself -- he's paying the Wizard (?) to do the work. Guy may be cheaper than a stealer mechanic, but at $100+ an hour, even cheap labour adds up. I think this car is $10K to get it up to a nominally reliable running condition, and then to really get it operating as it should be, another $5K+.

What is $2K (discounted parts) to you (with free labour) is going to be $5K to 90% of other folks (not-so-discounted parts + labor at $100-150 an hour). What is $4K to you is going to be pushing $10K for us .036 "pedestrians" of the world.

I am very vaguely familiar with Tavarish. I was youtubing a week ago and found this interesting video.
This is not a promo for Tavarish nor is it a dis on anyone with a youtube channel.
The following youtube is Mercedes related.

Just so you know, "Tavarish", literally, letter-for-letter, means "comrade" in Russian. In all of his videos, he actually acts/presents himself as a comrade. Always happy the communism is almost here (artificially happy). Personally, I find it off-putting. As to Hoovies, at least he's local

At the end of a stupid video where he digs up a lemon of a 2004 Range Rover after he buried it a year ago - finally realizing that he could be poisoning the ground water unless he drains the vehicle of all fluids, and that he shouldn't do it again - he shows off his new vertical car storage.

The 500 E enjoys pride of place next to worthy cars like the Viper, DeLorean, his first car, the R107 and an Aston Martin. Which seems like an encouraging sign he's going to do right by the car.

There is a similar thread on this subject on benzworld, Hoovie (real name: Tyler) has replied to some of the critics. I tried to send him a PM on benzworld to invite him to these forums, but, somewhat unsurprisingly, I can't as I don't have enough posts. Inviting in the open, I suspect, would get me banned (not that would be such a great loss tbh).

Very disappointing to see familiar names on here that I admire (not many posts here, but over 5000 on peach parts) bashing me. I used to be a section president of MBCA, and was a regular contributor to the Star-- even writing a detailed buyers guide to the 107 a few years ago. I've owned and fixed so many 124s over the years, along with many other Mercedes, and drank the "Best or Nothing" cool aid for a long time.
The truth is, these cars are well built, but just as susceptible to age and neglect as any other well built car from any continent. The only reason so many are still on the road is because we still value an old Mercedes so much and think they are worth fixing.
BMW products are garbage for the most part as we all know, but Toyota, Lexus, Honda, etc have made equally durable products-- probably better in many ways after the new millennium.
I remember being a keyboard warrior and bashing videos, saying similar things like "this guy knows nothing about cars". I guess now I know what it's like to be on the other side. I will admit that I dumb it down a little bit and ham up a few things, but that's how you entertain the widest audience possible...
Also keep in mind that titles have to be as clickbait as possible...

The usual gang of BW 124 idiots (supplemented by that paragon of wisdom and forum moderation, Tootone) calling a YouTube clickurbator guy an idiot. It's like the blind leading the blind over there !! Hopefully none of them see this thread. At least Hoovy is making money from YouTube, and that crew over there is playing right into his hands!

Off-topic with no mention or sight of his 500E (which is in the shop) but Hoovie had a $23,000 six-car garage lift installed. That he got for free.

The R107 is his first car, and it's a vehicle that could probably use some love, rather than spending that love on buying a Yugo, or something.

Not to divert the thread away from Hoovie, but Tavarish speaks fluent Russian and has an interesting background, ex writer for Jalopnik, etc. Both of them, IMHO have legit knowledge about cars. Love them or hate them, both of them have managed to turn what is a hobby for most of us into a good living, from what I can see. I think the difficulty with YouTube success is longevity - to keep pumping out the content winds up being the bane of many YouTubers. And many say that YouTube is squeezing the monetization rules to make it more and more difficult for them. Ah well, let's see what happens to his 500E.

Hoovie finds out everything wrong with his W211 E63 wagon, rants about modern AMGs being nothing like what they were in the good ol' days, then proceeds to break his power steering pump after doing burnouts and a donut.

P.S. I want that "Don't Stop - Hammer Time" t-shirt he's wearing

Wiz doesn't have SDS? *smh*

And, uh, burnouts do not cause any problems; assuming the car is working normally and you turn off ESP.

:burnout:

Hoovie takes us through some of his cars and how and why each of them is broken in some way, including an update on his 500E and a very unusual issue with his R107:

Hoovie spends much time and money fixing his E63 wagon, then proceeds to break it on the dyno. He compares it, unfavorably, to his 500 E in terms of its complexity and durability.

"...I definitely was not going as hard as I possibly could on the throttle, so that would explain the lower horsepower..."

Um. I think someone does not understand the concept of a dyno. In this scenario, the throttle is on on/off switch, and you let the rev limiter engage at redline. None of this is dangerous and there is no risk of damaging anything, if the car is properly strapped down, and has cooling air supplied. Aye caramba!!

The Check Engine light on doesn't mean anything is broken, but something ain't working right. 353rwhp is lower than normal for an M156. Peak HP is rated at 6800, but on the dyno it the curve is pretty flat between 6000-7000. If he spun it to at least 6k, there isn't another 50hp magically missing by not spinning to 7k.

:v8:

Man, you guys are gluttons for punishment. I think I'd rather spend 3 hours of looking at Banzworld 126 threads (with their inherent incompetence, ignorance and humor) than 3 minutes of watching a Hoovy video.

Good news is, Hoovie has finally provided a full update on his 500E.

The bad news is you probably won't like it, but he does take an interesting trip to a local Euro pick-n-pull in a failed attempt to source some parts.

Without paying Hoovy by watching his video, I am very very torn as to who is worse .. Hoovy or Uncle Kent.

He bought a poorly maintained car and then complains when it needs $$$ restore? Then finds wrong info on how to remove the dash end vents... doesn't know to check the wiring connectors on the antenna... and why not buy a new (aftermarket) grille insert??

Trans failure at 111kmi = poor maintenance. No way the ATF & filter were changed on schedule. And it taking months to rebuild is his fault for picking the shop, otherwise it could have been done in a week. The diff failure is strange, and extremely rare.

I really, really hate the clickbait titles which don't match the content.

:banger:

Every time one of you guys watches his videos, you’re out long money in his pocket.
I figure one view is making him $0.0000314 richer, give or take, since YouBoob changed their payouts.

He is right, he should have paid more for a nicer car up front.
