Very nice! Fwiw new zoom tubes in the engine bay are not costly to buy, and you can get a good condition instrument cluster housing from a junkyard too to swap your gauges into should you wish to address the dot disease...

Bill,

Your car is looking great!

One thing that bugged me about my car was the deteriorating rubber on my zoom tubes. So I replaced first chance I had.

It’s not the end of the world but it appears that desert heat is getting to yours also. Try and replace them before they go NLA.

Still, You have a beautiful car :)

lol

Thanks man, yup they're deteriorating, instrument cluster will be going to a shop here for a professional clean up, I don't trust myself with it! Very few junkyard in the Emirates holding w124s these days!

Cheers Terry. Yup I need to get them done but shall I fit the plastic m117 part number tubes?

Today I dropped off the E500 to have the wheels refinished back to the diamond cut high-sheen finish, the speedometer housing cleaned and the B-pillar leather reattached as it has been separating from the panel recently and it is rather annoying, particularly when grabbing the seatbelt. Quite a common problem owning various W124s over the years. As you can imagine I am very excited to have it back, it is very hot now in the UAE and will only get hotter going into the summer, so the E500 is unlikely to do many miles now until October 2021. Wheels make one of the biggest difference on a car IMO and these were letting mine down.

I have also ordered the correct rotor arm brackets for the newer rotor arms (NLA, got them off eBay, not cheap) and asked my usual shop for the pricing on the air intake tubes, new headlight wiper motors, front shock absorbers, 8mm front spring pads and a pair of air filters. May or may not take the new headlight wiper motors depending how much they are.

On the C63 AMG, the power steering bracket cracked! So the car got a used power steering bracket (to avoid spending $$$ on a new power steering pump which is working perfectly), one new pulley, coolant hose replaced (leaking) and the coolant flushed. I also then got a new set of Pirelli P-Zeros for the rear as they were totally worn. C63 running OK now *touches wood*, probably run it for another 12 months or so. I have had a quick look at Panamera's, E63 and M5 but can't seem to find anything low mileage in good condition at a sensible price.

Few videos of the C63 AMG when it was with Gulf Performance in Ajman, UAE. Tasos the main mechanic is a very good guy with AMGs and extremely knowledgable.

After sometime my car is finally back with me after having the wheels refurbished back to diamond cut finish, speedometer housing cleaned and B pillar fabric replaced. Overall pretty happy without going into the details, more photos to come once the car is fully cleaned.

Attaching an old photo to show how bad the DDD was!

For those who saw my other thread, looking likely to have Brabus Monoblock V's split 19" fitted with probably the supersprint exhaust (not decided on that yet). Next job is also the rear windscreen which I will try to do next weekend.

Few small jobs today guys:

1) front grill replaced with new old stock OEM full grill assembly, photos don't show the true difference in the flesh the new one looks incredible!
2) SLS reservoir filter replaced (this was cleaned during the last service but a member on here helpfully told me it could be ordered separately so I got one a while back, only just carefully installed it )
3) bonnet hook handle, finally got the right part number and replaced it as the old one was quite weathered
4) small screw for the middle of the rear bumper...small thing but oddly was missing since I've owned the car. Makes a big difference guys as holds the bumper straight and fixed. All members should check and do this
5) air intake hoses now replaced with OEM new ones from MB after a very long time!

Looking great, wheels look great, cluster came up really well. New zoom tubes make a huge difference.

Coincidentally I just got mine back also - but from the paint shop - wanted to remove stone chips from the front bumper but ended up taking off all the paint back to bare plastic...

I'll have to check that screw you are talking about

Approaching 40c, have to admit the AC is not as efficient as the C63, fully to be expected, very humid here also.
Just curious, have you had all the vacuum pods tested at the 7 ports located behind the passenger airbag? If the main air flap is not fully closing, this will significantly impair A/C cooling on very hot days. It's a very common failure as there is no major symptom, like air coming out of the wrong vents.

I assume you may already have window film applied to block UV/IR rays, which will also help with heat rejection. If not, check into that as well.

Thanks Dave I've not checked that, what is the best way to perform this check? The car windows have some protection but it's very old, I did want to get the new clear 3M film done at some point.

Only way to check the vacuum pods is to pull the passenger airbag, and use a Mity-Vac to apply vacuum to each of the 7 hoses separately. Each should hold vacuum with zero leakdown. If not, the pod(s) connected to that line are likely defective. Unfortunately the dash has to come out to replace the main air (recirculation) flap vacuum pods. At least 4-5 hours labor. I've done this several times...

Nothing exciting, last night nice cruise, good 200km in the E500 in the hot and humid weather, brimmed up with super unleaded during the trip :)

The interior photos previously posted here are mainly when the car is clean and pristine, in normal driving conditions the Android and iPhone chargers both in, stereo on, parking cards accessible from the ashtray, so the car is getting proper enjoyment :)

Also a good observation: engine water temperature steady even in 40c heat and after driving for nearly 2 hours and the oil pressure remains above 2 bars whilst at idle.

I am so fascinated that half way around the world from San Francisco, CA, in the (UAE? Dubai?) that at the gasoline station, at the Bakeria, Al Rawda, a “delicious hot dog” is advertised to hungry drivers. I can also find “delicious hot dogs” similarly advertised at the gasoline stations near my home. 😳🤣

Hello all. No real updates apart from the car has now clocked over 99,000km. Quite low for the year and I'm sure I'll hit 100,000km soon. I decided not to install the Brabus wheels, there were too many questions by way of spacers, bolts etc and one of my friends advised me they have a habit of giving issues.

So the result is: the E500 LTD stays OEM specification for the most part. My next maintenance item is another oil change so that's not very exciting.

I also spotted a Mercedes McLaren SLR yesterday whilst in traffic, not something you see everyday (I understand due to the extensive maintenance those cars need). Quite rare now and I thought you guys would enjoy the pic :)

Not a very exciting update, oil, oil filter and air filters replaced today. Car is just shy of 100,000km, at around 99,750km.

Went to change the fuel filter, seems the original is still in there but the replacement seems smaller in diameter. Does anyone know if a bracket is needed to install the revised part number 45-01, replacing 13-01?

In other news my C63 AMG underwent a full detail, removal of all dents and dings, repaint of body plastics such as door handles, side skirts, mirror covers and rear bumper. Headlights cleaned and brake calipers repainted. I am over the moon with it! Soon to see some interior freshing up too before light preventative maintenance such as injectors etc. I'm glad I've kept the car, I have managed to get it quite fresh vs the cost involved to upgrade to the facelift W204 C63.

That Knecht Mahle KL38 fuel filter looks funny --- smaller in diameter than original??????
for what it is worth, I recently swapped out my own Knecht KL38 fuel filter (date code 2016-03-09) and replaced it with Hengst H80WK05 (82mm Diameter x 170mm Length) 0024774401 and it fit fine:

Thanks. It just looks small in the photo as the bracket was off. Fits perfect but I'm not sure 45-01 will

That is correct! How odd that USA-spec filters are #44 but Euro-spec is #45. The #45 is almost half price. Weird.

The filter should be the same diameter and fit tightly in the bracket, same as the old filter. If not, something is wrong, and I'd replace it with the proper-diameter filter.

The late-style filter is #27 or #28, totally different design (cost reduction as of chassis C226366), with hose clamps.

Ok guys I need to revisit the fuel filter issue next time I am under the car. Might need a spacer of some sort so the new one fits in the bracket.

Now i need to get organised and change the rear screen on the E500 due to a crack and also some delamination which otherwise detracts from a nice looking car. The screen cracked from inside or within the layers of glass so I need to look into that before installing the new one. I'm tempted to get a new front screen but that depends on costs. Does anyone know? There are several part numbers also, confusing on EPC.

The garage where i stored the glass have dug it out of storage and over the next 2 weeks I'm hoping it will be changed (pics attached).

At the same time I would like to paint all the roof trims gloss black as they have become a lighter colour over time (some trim pieces are NLA, namely the roof trims and the front screen trim are NLA), so to keep a consistent look they will all be prepared and painted instead.

At the same time the car is due for a polish and detail. I have been hoarding new door sills in the trunk for a very long time (stainless ones for the LTD) so I'll likely get these fitted to replace the scratched up originals.

IMG-20210803-WA0004.jpgIMG-20210803-WA0006.jpgIMG-20210803-WA0005.jpg

Another item ticked off the list. Finally obtained two front E500 LTD floor mats which means I now have a full set. They need a wet vac clean, I've installed them as is anyway and removed the MB mats (which are actually very nice in their own right!). Uplifted the interior IMO.

I located these through a very good friend in the UK. They came in one of his AMG E60s years ago and I asked the question off the cuff and the answer was "yes but I only have the fronts!" ... very happy as you can imagine, certainly makes the interior more exclusive vs. a standard W124.

Hello all. I do not have great news, my car is in the shop, new glass install went well but by the evening the glass had cracked on it's own accord. At the top from the inside. The garage was absolutely devastated and they had already ordered a new glass from Germany before they called me, at their cost. I am very grateful for that as it is not a cheap part at all.

It seems mb have admitted to the new glass having issues when they ordered the replacement unit, they suggested installing w124 pedestrian unit. The garage refused of course as they know I want the car original. I'm also thinking perhaps I had a bad unit or it was damaged in storage (it was stored nearly 2 years)?

Any thoughts would be welcome, the garage never had this issue in years of installation of glass on lots of exotics old and new. Any tips for installation to avoid this happening again?

P.s.one of my friends has this issue on his w124 E500 in Dubai with a new glass. We put that down to poor installation but maybe instead there is a wider problem with these units?

I have been enjoying the silence of the E500E for nearly 2 years now (shocked myself I've owned it that long already) with the full OEM stock exhaust system i.e. catalytic converters, resonator and backbox. More recently I have craved for that V8 sound when out for drives but did not want to go catless to avoid droning etc. I also wanted a resonator and backbox replacement, not only the backbox.

Therefore a Supersprint Centre + rear exhaust 90x70 (designed specifically for the E500E) has been ordered directly from Supersprint Italy, I understand the exhausts are built to order and as such the system is still being built in Italy and will soon (estimated 1-2 weeks) begin its journey to Dubai UAE.

I have not seen many E500E's running the Supersprint exhaust systems, I liked that it was sensibly priced (around 1,400EUR / $1,700 shipped) and it is fully stainless steel with good reviews on other cars so I decided to bite the bullet and order one for my car (whilst they still last!).

Once I receive the exhaust I will get some photos up of the quality and then get it fitted so I let everyone know what I think of the sound and whether in my opinion it is a worthwhile purchase!

Collected the car 11am this morning, had a bunch of things done so its been away for a while, summary:

Rear windscreen replaced
Roof and window trims all painted gloss black
Front and rear springs replaced
Front shocks replaced and hardware
All rear suspension arms and bushes changed, including the rear anti roll bar etc
Wheel alignment

Just did a 350km drive and WOW this thing feels incredible! No more pulling / bad alignment, car steady and flat around corners, car just soaks up imperfections in the road.

Proper write up once I get more miles down and I guess once suspension beds in but I am very surprised renewed suspension has made this much of a difference! Btw the springs and front shocks did not appear to have issues.

New exhaust up next, probably next weekend :)

20211021_180459.jpg20211021_180442.jpg20211021_180438.jpg20211021_180434.jpg20211021_180423.jpg20211021_180414.jpg20211021_180536.jpg20211021_180525.jpg

Good news, exhaust arriving tomorrow all being well, customs and VAT paid to DHL now (yes, we have those in the UAE!). I hope there are no issues getting it installed, supposedly plug and play for the E500E. We shall see.

After the front shocks got replaced I have a noise when turning left in the car, need to get that checked out, probably when the exhaust is getting installed and the car is on the lift.

Other than that, the car is running lovely, done about 500km over the last 2 days and still super smooth. Seats are quite uncomfortable after an hour or so though, perhaps a set of Recaro CSE/Classic is the answer? Would be good to know everyone's thoughts. Hard to match C63 seats :)

Went to view a Audi R8 as a replacement to my C63 AMG this morning, owned by a lovely couple who have had the car fully maintained with Audi main dealer. It's the 4.2 V8 though and not the 5.2 V10 so performance is comparable with the C63 AMG. Stunning condition with carbon and extended leather, black on black. Hmmm decisions decisions...

Ok so a rather large box is taking up space in my home now... unpacking this reveals an exhaust of a very high quality and the oval exhaust tips are lovely. Interesting it is one fixed piece I.e. backbox and resonator welded, not sure if this is an issue? I can't think of any downfalls other than if any part of the exhaust gets damaged the entire unit is scrap. Also double pipes all the way through. Supersprint have advised using the factory hangers and brackets to mount this exhaust. Planning to have the exhaust installed this coming Saturday, more info to be provided once it is installed with respect to both looks and sound. I'm hoping it's not too loud.

I suspect my 17" EVO wheels will not suit this large exhaust, therefore I'm on the hunt for some nice wheels to set the car off (downhill from now, isn't it?!)

20211024_133526.jpg20211024_131952.jpg20211024_131947.jpg20211024_131939.jpg20211024_131700.jpg20211024_131656.jpg

So, today I'm in Qatar on business, the garage working on the car told me the exhaust does not fit :(

It touches the bumper. I was assured by Supersprint that the exhaust is perfect fitment for OEM bumper. This is stated on their webpage.

Does anyone know if I'm using the correct rear backbox exhaust hangers? Anyway the garage has told me if the exhaust is any lower it could cause issues with drivability. So possibly a welding issue at the factory as these are built to order.

Disappointed to say the least, I am reluctant to cut the bumper. What does everyone think?

Seems like I will have to return the exhaust to Supersprint and consider some other options!!

+3 on tweaking the brackets. You only need ~5mm clearance to the bumper.

The rear bumper (bare cover) is still available new, I'd buy a spare now if you decide to cut/notch the bumper.

1635860129828.png

@e500.org, Bill, DO NOT cut the bumper. The installer just needs to adjust the steel bracket somehow by bending or inserting a spacer or something. The steel hanger part has to force it down by stretching the rubber hangers. If you have the reinforced rubber donut hangers it won’t work. Just get the all rubber donuts and some spares and check them from time to time.

My RENNtech backbox clears the bumper by about 1/4” to 3/8” and no harm has come to the bumper. Only issue is entering or exiting steep driveways where you have to be careful as it’s possible to scrape the bottom of the tips. Note that my suspension is not lowered and is stock height. This would apply to any below bumper backbox AMG, RENNTech, Remus etc; You have to buy into that risk. I enclosed a few pics but it's hard to see the bracket and the black rear shot show the clearance. This set up has been on my car for at least 8 years.

Thanks all - they're going to make some adjustments tomorrow and see what the result is

Terry - your setup looks lovely and thanks for chiming in. I do not want to cut the bumper and I have decided I will not!

Hello all. Still no updates on the exhaust but I have received a new bracket from Supersprint so I will try and get it installed tomorrow.

I also bought a few more parts for my E500 recently (yesterday in fact) from a very good friend of mine (pics on the car)

Front and rear big brake kit
Neez Euro Six 18" alloy wheels
AMG twin rear exhaust backbox

One of my friends was lucky to buy a 94 E500 LTD recently with these parts, he wanted to change them so I offered to buy them as they're quite difficult to find, whilst these parts did not come cheap it's a good opportunity to purchase them in one sitting

Been looking at tyres for these alloys as the current tyres are junk/old . It seems 235/40/18 & 265/35/18 or 245/40/18 & 275/35/18 are good options. It seems Neez made both 8.5J and 9.0J front wheels , 9.5J rears. I'll need to check what these are once we take them off. I did have a quick look and Pirelli Pzero are a good bet for the desired tyre sizes, I run them on my C63 and they seem fine.

For the brakes I didn't really think about what to do with them, my existing brakes are fine TBH, so no immediate plan to change that. I probably need to disassemble them, check for the condition of all the parts then reassemble. I would prefer to paint them red also and refurbish them with new seals etc . I've read some posts to say such brakes are not suitable for the e5006,yet I've seen similar setups in japan (also where this car came from) and Russia. I also need to check in detail what sort of modifications were made to fit them to the E500 (brake shield for example)

After a very long day at work I finally collected my E500 from installing the supersprint exhaust...kudos to supersprint they sent across a modified hanger, after some tinkering its fitted. Sitting slightly low but no scraping yet over the usual bumps turns and steep driveway, can be modified to sit higher if need be

Better pics and video to come soon - initial impressions - pretty quiet really. Sounds nice on full chat, otherwise pretty OEM and friendly. Quite nice overall and perfect for me personally, others may find it too quiet. I suspect for more noise I'll need to de cat...hmmm...car feels quicker now too, psychological I think.

I also now have an E60 AMG Japan backbox in my hoard, upon initial observation it's a E500 backbox with AMG tips welded to it, or am I missing something? Seems very factory though.

This is my understanding as well, the E60 Japan backbox just has fancy tips added. However, I don't know if anyone has cut one open to verify, and/or done back to back audio comparison vs stock.

I had the same feeling when I did mine. OE exhaust is very heavy. I wish I had known about Supersprint exhausts for these. Now I do, but I'm not exactly motivated to change since your experience of sound more or less mirrors mine (Magnaflow custom). I've heard RENNtech mufflers with no resonators and could write the same description about those that you have about the Supersprint. I think it's the nature of the engine. I heard mine with open headers just to assess how much I wanted to change it to get to the sound I wanted. It doesn't make much noise until you hit the gas.
