Tyres are fine, no issues to report at all.

Could not find a good shop to diamond cut these (which is what I wanted in the first place), so opted for polished finish. Pretty happy with it tbh and no plans to change it at the moment.
For shits and giggles, if you tire of the all-silver-paint center caps, you might try the center cap with the plasti-chrome accents. It seems to match the diamond-cut or polished finish quite well.

Some pics from my iPhone as of late, I gave the engine bay a very quick clean the other week , it had not been cleaned for a very long time, perhaps over a year. I will get the engine bay properly steam cleaned and dressed over the next few weeks. Otherwise I’m enjoying the car lots and alternating between the E500 and AMG C63.

I also recently purchased an 09’ Porsche Cayenne S (full factory turbo kit) from a friend - car is finished in dark red with tan leather. Full options. She has owned the car for the last 6 or 7 years and was about to trade it into webuyanycar (one of those outfits that will buy practically any car but offer F all), for next to nothing. I did not particularly need another car but it’s a highly maintained Cayenne that drives absolutely lovely, with full suspension front and rear replaced by Porsche only a few years ago so I decided to take it off her hands. More photos of that to come once I collect it and have the car thoroughly cleaned.

Welcome to 90s…

At my friends shop last night to adjust my SLS to bring it lower, glad to announce whilst it’s not a drastic change, the rear is certainly lower than before and looks much nicer. More pics to come later.

For now some nice cars in the shop, my filthy E500 in the rear surrounded by another E500 LTD, 500E, E320 cab, C36 AMG, W126 AMG. Then arrived a ropey 190 Cosworth 2.3. Hiding from view is a w114, W124 coupe 3.4.

Short honeymoon with the cayenne, it’s now gone.

I’m looking at buying this Japan imported 1998 S600 to get a V12 in my life, can someone please talk me out of this 😂

Late model w140, 156,000km, 2 keys and full book pack from Japan. Excellent condition and everything works. Full options bar the optional adjustable suspension as far as I could see. Seems to be no rust apart from corrosion on the exhaust.

Started perfect from cold, super smooth and the shop did the old coin balancing trick on the engine…lol

Guys I am looking for 71C thermostat for my E500. EPC is showing the 80C one only. Anyone know the part number for 71C one for facelift cars?

Also today I came across w124 amg E60, car is discussed elsewhere on the forum, nice car but mines much cleaner example. Asking $135k USD.

I don't know if a lower-opening t-stat is available for the late-build M119 engines / water-pumps.

Remember that a ~70C opening temp will translate into a fully-open temp of maybe ~90C, but this will not keep the engine any cooler once temps exceed the fully-opened rating. Once the t-stat is fully open, the limiting factor is the rest of the cooling system (radiator thermal capacity, airflow, liquid flow, etc etc).

:tumble:

Copy of this post from late 2021:

There's not a unit with a lower opening temp that I'm aware of. (Edit: There may be one, but I don't have photos or a part number, and I can't recall anyone posting details about this on the forum in the past 10+ years. As described below, this still should not have any effect on reducing temps of well over 100C.)
Please keep in mind that the t-stat should be fully open by 94°C. Since you are seeing temps of 105C+, a thermostat with lower opening temp would have zero effect.
I'm not familiar with the holes drilled to modify the thermostat - I don't know where they would be located, or if this will make ANY difference in function at 100C°+ temps.

Yesterday, I went back to the OEM 17" EVO-II wheels fitted with the Michelin tyres and removed the NEEZ wheels. Truth be told I really liked the NEEZ wheels and how they looked on the car but ultimately the ride was harsher than factory and I wanted to revert the car back to factory specs for the super smooth drive. I am glad to report the car is nice and smooth now, back how I remember it when I first bought it.

The exhaust will also be removed and the car returned back to factory spec, I might run my AMG E60 backbox with the factory resonator for a while and see if I like the look of it. Then I need to install my Limited trimmed gear stick (no easy feat based on previous experience) and still need to obtain a sportline factory 390mm steering wheel and get it re-trimmed with the Limited leather (I have the Limited painted leather pieces I bought years ago from Uli in Germany), I have a steering wheel in the UK in good condition but shipping etc is a headache with the airbag. So I am looking for one of these steering wheels here in Dubai.

Apart from this my car is running well (*touches wood*) and has been sitting in the underground parking for a good few weeks now so needs a proper detail in and out.

Yesterday I had my air conditioning regassed. It has broadly been fine but we’ve got some really hot and humid weather recently and whilst using the car during the day the air conditioning wasn’t cooling as much as I’d like.

Trip to my friends garage and the air conditioning is now ice cold and functioning perfectly. The system had 510g of gas, which I was told is low and I have no records of the last service so it’s been a long time. We purged the system and filled to just under 1kg, just under because of the very hot and humid conditions.

My friend bought my wheels for his stunning LTD E500 (which incidentally, they originally came off).

Quick inspection today reveals coolant leak and transmission oil leak from the cooler to the trans 😢

The radiator is new so I think a new top hose is needed now to fix this leak (with new clips) and for the tranny line leak, I assume that needs replacement of the trans line ( the one going to the cooler?)

Make sure the upper radiator hose clamp is fully tight. Use a cooling system pressure tester to identify the exact source.

If the trans cooler hose fitting is tight, yeah, try replacing it, assuming there's no ATF visible elsewhere.

Thanks Dave, upper rad hose is super tight, absolutely no more movement on the clamp. I suspect it’s the original and gave way when we replaced the radiator. I really should have changed the hose at the same time. Anyway a new one is on order now but will take 2 weeks to arrive.

We have cleaned the underside of the car today and the belly pan so I will monitor the ATF hose from the cooler and replace if needed, we did not try to tighten this so I will try it next time the car is in the air. It’s a weep at the moment so not terribly concerned.

Forgot to ask - what brand is the new radiator, and if Mahle/Behr, was it the Indian or South African version? If you still have a leak with a new hose, you will need to pressure test, this will make the exact source very obvious.

Radiator is BEHR original MB, made in South Africa.

Yes the shop will do the pressure test, apparently they did it when the radiator got changed and they did find a leak, hose at the coolant tank was not buttoned up tight enough, so either they missed this one too or it’s developed recently. I can feel coolant underneath the hose and saw it trickling down to the belly pan this morning but indeed would need to see the leak live with the system under 15 PSI for example to definitively say it’s the top hose or something else. I’ve not ordered the line for the ATF yet because I want to check if that may need tightening up or if it’s another hose.

Coolant hose now changed, air filters also done. Car running nicely, no issues to report, 105,000km now. I’m only 3,000km since the last oil service so will do another at the end of the year.

They had a nice 600 Pullman in the garage, along with SL600 AMG and a 126 getting an M113k.

In my overall objective to be OEM+ I now removed the Supersprint exhaust and installed my factory resonator and installed AMG E60 rear muffler I had in storage. Very glad with the install, need some new hangers for the muffler as I have the ring donut rubbers which I understand are in the incorrect ones. Car is pretty quiet now (AMG muffler sounds same as stock) and I’m happy with it.

Lovely drive today in the E500, car is running great. I still have a few parts to install, including new headlight lenses, NSS, new exhaust hangers to bring the backbox up a little and a few other small things I’ve now forgotten, great weather to be enjoying the car compared with the harsh summers

Looking for a 911 to replace the C63, should be a nice garage mate for the E500

No real updates now in 2023, daily driving the E500 as the C63 is out of action, firstly broken steering rack which has now been repaired and then ESP module seems to be faulty. Trying to locate a solution vs a new one due to the cost.

From daily driving the E500 the gear shifter bushes are worn out, lots of slack changing gear, so the car will be going in for that in the coming weekend. Still need to fit my new NSS and it’s time for an oil change, might get these jobs done all at the same time but I can’t have the car out of action too long as it’s my daily transport.

We’ve also had a rare bout of rain, nothing for the mighty W124 though 😄

Minor updates on the E500: shifter bushings replaced (wow what a difference), another oil change done, oil pressure nice and healthy. Rear window cable gave way one day driving on the highway so the garage have ordered parts to replace it so the rear window can function again. Sunroof also slow to shut a few weeks ago so I’ve left that firmly closed now never to open again (haha).

Unhelpfully I also recently picked up a scratch to the rear bumper, bound to happen after driving it so long daily, literally kissed a wall backing it up.

Next up the car will be going in for a full detail, alloy refurbishment and ceramic coating as it’s picked up a fair few scratches over the years. I’ll get the rear bumper touched up at the same time.

I’ve been toying with some larger alloys for summer, maybe 19’ Brabus staggered set as they look awesome on these cars.

AMG C63 now sold, 2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo in its place (eek), always had a soft sport for a Turbo and found one locally with 45,000 miles so went for it. Just had a bunch of preventive maintenance and servicing done so she’s ready for the Dubai summer. Still can’t believe how quick these are for the size/weight.

One of my friends is shortly importing a 2003 996 Turbo from Japan, I'm very tempted by it (photos below)

I thought it was a good time to update this thread. Work has been so busy and the Cayenne Turbo does a good job of being a DD I’ve not had time for the E500. - although my rear window has not worked since April, I have just about got the car into the garage to replace the window mechanism. all done now and replaced, greased up nicely, runs lovely. I was lucky to find an NLA part on eBay back in April.

At the same time, we did an inspection on the car. This recognised a few issues that need resolution:

Rear stabiliser link damaged
Rear axle lower bushes worn out
Front LCA bushes have some play (ball joint ok)
Steering idler arm bush has some play
Gearbox mount worn out
Transmission cooler rubber line leaking
Radiator leaking coolant from top hose
Tyres 2019
AC could do with a regas

Not bad since I did not really do any major work since 2020. That said, the mileage has not increased much as it’s a second car. The tyres do not exhibit much use and they are good for inspection for another year (my car is due renewal January 2024) I probably keep them for now.

I have been toying with selling the car recently. I can’t help but think the money could go into something I could use more regularly without worrying about something breaking or someone damaging the car….maybe a 997.2 or 991 Porsche would itch the scratch.

Interested to see what you can find wrt the transmission mount. These things have been NLA for some time.

Yes the garage informed me it’s NLA. I believe I have a spare somewhere, if so I’m in luck!
If you replace it, please take photos of old next to new. These mounts just "settle" over time, they rarely cause any significant symptoms... very different than the hydraulic engine mounts.

:rugby:

I don’t know how long the motor and transmission mounts are good for but I had them all replaced along with the shifter bushings and the short leaky hose between the PS pump reservoir and the pump at 113,035 miles quite a while back in January of 2010. I’m now at 143,087 miles with a long 6 year rest on the car from 2016 thru 2022.
So basically I’ve got 30K miles on the parts and no activity of stress or heat transfer for about 6 years. Everything appears to be OK except for that PITA PS pump reservoir that’s leaking again.

Fingers Crossed

Oof, LCAs are NLA, Trans Mount is NLA and lower rear bushings are a real pain to replace. If you’re selling the car, do it now to avoid the parts chasing and labor hours. If you do the repairs you ought to keep it for good. Ask me how I know 🙄

Thx Tim. Indeed this is one of the reasons to sell the car as over time there are likely to be more issues with accessing parts.

I have been told the LCA bushes can be replaced and not the entire LCA, as long as ball joint is ok. Is that not true?

By the way I wanted to do the repair before I sold the car to ensure it’s in good condition for the new owner. I

The mechanical parts installed fine, no problems. I was charged 3hr labour I believe.

I also booked the car in to replace the headlight lenses and seals. Upon removal, The chrome unfortunately on my original headlights was damaged. Luckily my shop had a set of nearly new E500 headlights. They gave me those and installed the new lenses.

At the same time we ripped out all the old HIDs from Japan (dated 1999) and went back to the OEM light setup. Very happy!

Now the car could do with a polish before being put up for sale.

You can get the reflectors re-chromed on the old lights... someone may want them as cores to refurbish. Note that LHT and RHT reflectors are different (same with the lenses).
