1992 LH module (fuel injection computer)

In order to gain the added horse power, does the 1992 LH module have to be from a 1992 500e, or can it be from a 1992 400e? What would be part number? Thanks

For a late 500E or any E500, the LH module MUST be from a 1991 or 1992 500E (US or Euro) to get the WOT enrichment.

It is not advisable to use a 400E module in a 500E, and while the engine might run, it is highly probable that you will see a reduction in power generated by the engine as a result of such.

Part number 012 54562 32, Bosch 0 280 002 512. I purchased one from GSXR and it took all of about two minutes to install. The module was in beautiful condition, as have all the parts I've purchased from Dave. I think it adds a tiny bit more torque when you punch it.

Gerry, I have never run acroos one at a wrecking yard. So do the s500's have that module or only 500e's

I seem to remember that GSXR maintains that one from a 92 W140 (S-class) 5.0 works fine, whereas Uncle maintains that it MUST come from another 500E. Is this still the case?

One of my spares that I got from a wrecking yard is from a 1992 5-liter W140 M119. I believe it has the WOT enrichment, and I would not hesitate to use it in my car.

The one I am running, is a brand-new, Euro 1992 LH unit for a 500E that I got at MercMan in England.

Cheers,
Gerry

So the part number isn't an indicator as to whether it has wot enrichment? For those running the module, can you notice the difference?

Yes, each variation of the LH module has its own part number.

I have never been able to notice the difference, but my Butt Dyno is not as sensitive as many owners' are.

Certain part numbered ECUs have it, and certain part numbered ones don't. 012 545 62 32, 014 545 17 32, and 014 545 18 32 are three of the ones that I know of that have enrichment, there are probably others. There is a complete list on GSXR's site. Another giveaway is the date code. The switch to non-enrichment 93 M.Y. ECUs took place during 7/92, so anything made prior to 7/92 should be golden, and some 7/92 dated ECUs may be good too depending on the part number.

Regards,
Eric

So is it now a general consensus that 92 W140 5.0 ECUs, including but not limited to the 014 545 18 32 ECU is/are suitable substitutes for an 036 owner seeking a WOT enrichment ECU?

Yes. And they are usually cheap compared to the "genuine 500E" ones.
Bought one once for 85$ off ebay US, another one here in Germany for around 100€. Both working perfect. People always make a mystery about it.
Funny to see people selling "genuine 500E" LH boxes on german ebay for 800€, while the working W140 ones cost a fraction of it. On the other hand, using the W140 modules is not "original"...

The only downsight i noticed so far when using the W140 modules, is that the fuel pumps initially run longer on "ignition on"
So its really not 100% original.

I bought this one from a forum member, for my E420. I received unit dated 92m09 with number 014 545 62 32. Was promised a WOT unit and the pic in the ad is a 91 model. I don't care as long as the one I got is a WOT unit. Can anyone with knowledge confirm?

014-545-62-32 does not have WOT enrichment. Sorry. :(

I can supply a 1992 400E module with WOT enrichment if you need it...

Thanks for clarification, as I suspected. I've contacted the seller, hopefully it's just a mistake and will be corrected. Since the seller is on this forum I don't believe he's trying to scam me.

Agreed. Maybe he sent the wrong one, and can replace it with the correct module...

It's been six days. If he doesn't have the ability to provide you another correct one with WOT enrichment, then he should at the very least provide you with the option of either giving you your money back or giving you something else of equal or greater value that you need/want.

If he doesn't do right by you in a timely manner, you'd be doing the rest of us a favor by exposing him. At the very least he should respond to your communiques in a timely manner while he tries to correct/rectify the situation. I'll give a person all the time in the world as long as they stay in touch with me.

Dave, you once told me (a long time ago) that you suspected that the older ECUs that start with a 012 prefix might be better for hopped up engines, but I can't remember exactly why you held that view. Do you still hold that view? I've been holding on to a couple of 012 ECUs even though one didn't show me any power gain on the chassis dyno over a 014 545 15 32 ECU because I still believe that they may hold more potential for a more radically modded engine. Do you have any new news on this topic?

Regards,
Eric

Eric, I don't recall that, or why I may have thought that. I don't know of any advantage to the older WOT modules. Sorry!

The seller's responded swiftly and promised to deliver a new ECU, aswell as letting me keep the wrong ECU for a small fee. Sound reasonable and he's been fairly communicative all along, so I expect no trouble. If I do, I will of course let you all know. He is stating that he just sent me the wrong box by accident, can happen to anyone really.

I'll keep you posted, I need to start hooning!! (thanks for that word dear board) ASAP, and to get the ladies wetter than E L James does, I need those extra ponies.

Yeah, I ran in some issues last year. Always important to cross-reference!

Today the replacement ECU arrived from the seller, and it is the correct unit. Can't wait to get my Butt Dyno back testing and verifying WOT excellence.

Maui, did you notice a difference in power?
Gerry, just as you would not put a 400 series LH module in a 500e, would you not put a module from a 600 series into a 500e?

600 series cars with V12 engines use two 6-cyl LH modules. The pinouts are different and each only controls 6 cylinders. A V8 car would not run at all with a V12 (600-series) module installed.

:mushroom1:

What I was thinking of was an R129 SL60, V8.
Ah, got it. This would only work if it was a 1993-95 R129 SL60 with LH injection. It would be similar to using a 5.0 LH module on a 4.2L engine. Although the car will run and drive with the "wrong" module, there is no advantage, no power gain, etc. The module needs to match engine displacement.

:pc1:

I don't think you'll get any benefit whatsoever. Talk to Bondavi, he's the 6.0 LH guru around these parts.

Or Cascade/JimB, but I'm not sure he's on this board.
I think he's the co owner of Bondavi's car and by his many many postings it appears he's the M and M (mechanical maestro) when it comes to pretty much any and everything Mercedes and 124 specifically.

Kind Regards,

Ron

Guys,

Is the WOT enrichment module really doing wonders on a later w124.036 or is it a pure 6 hp difference
that could be engulfed of a more worn engine?

My 185000 km engine in my -95 is quite agile but i have not have a immediate comparison of a car of a earlyer year.

This will be possible in this summer at the latest in the meeting in the end of june in Germany if not sooner.

But is it significant?

Bondavi, is it true that cascade is the co-owner of your RENNtech 400E?

Dyno graphs are here. Power gains were the same with 250-300kkm, which is expected unless there are serious mechanical issues with your engine...

:v8:

Thank you, gsxr

This is more than i expected, 10 hp and 12 tourqequarts times 1,35 nm is remarkable, might be a very cheap
way to increase the output, this will in theory make 330 hp and 496 nm, i may have to look after a earlyer ECU..

My engine is in very good mechanical health by the way, thank you very much...

Witch make this look more attractive..hmmm that is why all the old E500s ECUs in the Swedish scrapyards are gone..

I installed a WOT module I purchased from gsxr and I do notice a difference, small but a difference. I think it takes a couple hundred miles of use for the module to adapt to your driving habits. I'm not big time speeder but I do like to go from zero to the speed limit in a spirited manner.

Maui is correct. The power gain is very clear on a dyno graph, and on a dragstrip timeslip, but it is difficult to notice via most ButtDynos™. :D

IIRC, Jano tested this in his 1994 E500 at the Mojave Mile and it was worth a +3mph gain in trap speed, from ~142mph to ~145mph (at ~2500' elevation).
