1994 E500 - "Upgrade" to 1992 LH unit?

I have read numerous times about the 1992 "LH unit" (ECU/DME I assume) offering more power via full throttle enrichment vs the later cars.

Is this a fact? If so, exactly what do I need to purchase for my '94 to go from 315hp to 322hp?

Thanks :beerchug:

A ECU from a 92 500e or S500 will do the trick

Thanks for the reply. I assume it is a direct plug-in upgrade, no coding or other messing around required?

Is there a list of ECU part numbers that are known to be correct or does one just look at the production date sticker?

It's a direct plug-in, no coding, however you should clear all codes after installing, and re-set the adaptation values. The production date shouldn't matter as long as it's a true 1992 unit. Part numbers are in the EPC.

Or, you can buy one already cleared/reset/tested and ready for installation:

Power gain is only at WOT, but has been dyno tested and shows approx +7hp at the wheels, estimated 9-10hp at the crank. I've been running '92 modules in all my M119 cars for years now, both 4.2L and 5.0L. Zero problems.

Although I didn't purchase a LH module from Dave, he was helpfull in identifing and locating one for me.

If possible, it is preferable to get an original LH unit that was intended for the E500E rather than one of the "later" superseded units for the 500SL/SL500 or 500SEL/S500 that MB has superseded the E500E units with.

There were differences in the programming/ignition curves built into the original E500E units. They are NOT identical with the R129 and W140 units although the E500E will generally run fine (many say no loss of power) with a R129/W140 unit installed.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks for the tip. I bought Dave's 91/92 500E Euro LH box so I hope it will perform well in my '94 :)

You are good to go, my friend. It is not a bad idea to have a spare EZL and a spare LH unit on hand -- specific to the E500E -- as there is a good chance that they will go bad in future years, and they may not be all that easy to source in a reasonable time frame as the "population" of our cars dwindles.

To me it's seeming clearer and clearer that the purchase of a good E500E "parts car" (wrecked/totalled) is a great option in terms of securing the necessary spare parts after dismantling the car. It is highly likely in the next 2-3 years that I am going to do this, or perhaps sooner if/when the right car crosses my path.

Cheers,
Gerry
