Factory rear view mirror

No, one type has the manual operated dimming and one with automatic (electronic) dimming. The autodimming mirror came as standard on the facelift models.

Of the automatic it is two types, one of them have manual choises for the dimming rate; low, high and off, but I think this type is an older version not used on the 036. However, I have seen this mirror in some US 036 cars.

The stalk on the later automatic diming mirror is shorter, so the mirror comes closer to the roof.

But all types fit the car.

USA never got the auto-dim factory mirror. So for US-spec cars, all 124 coupes/sedans have the same rear view mirror, with the possible exception of the cabriolet.

Thanks, guys. The auto dimming mirror is available, the dealer wants $290 for it and the common w124 mirror is $70. Will stop by the dealer and order the common mirror today, will take a day to get. My mirror's rear latch had cracked and fallen off.

Time to order a 2phast™ Homelink Mirror instead?

:apl:

The 2Phast™ models are really worth the cost - a great upgrade and midway between the lame-o stock Benz US mirror and the factory auto mirror.

Chicks dig 'em, too, because you look like a total champ smooth operator driving up from an evening out and just hit the button on the mirror to open the garage door.

These mirrors are also 2Phast™ personally tested and approved, so their charm-powers are guaranteed. I have 'em on my E500 and my 560SEC, and soon to put my third one on my wife's E320 wagon.

Like Dave already said, none of the US spec cars came with a auto dimming mirror. It was not an option either. They were in the EPC, but I don't know if they were blocked from ordering in the US.

Not all of the OEM auto dimming mirrors had shorter brackets (stalks) only the ones with the offset mounting socket.

Naw, I don't need anything more than a plain rear view mirror.

I offer a basic auto dimming mirror for $100. Big improvement over the regular non-auto dimming mirror.

OK, I guess the cars I have seen has got it later on then. Those autodim mirrors with buttons are also rare to see here in Europe.

Rik - could you explain the "offset mounting socket" please?

Didn't the auto dimming come as standard on the LTDs ?and I think it was an option on facelift Euro models, or may have been fitted on late 94s, as my 94 just had a standard one. 2phast sort one out for me though (just a basic autodimming) and made a big difference.

I believe you are correct Bing ... autodimming mirrors came standard on the Limited models.

Hmm, still learning, thanks. :-)

I catched an autodimming for the other car at the breakers, short stalk bracket, including the OE wiring A124 440 59 09

Steve - the autodimming mirror is highly recommended over the regular manual type. And 2phast already have one available to almost the same cost as the manual, a simple choice IMO.

The smaller bracket was needed on some of the auto dimming mirrors because the mirror used didn't have the mounting point in the middle of the mirror, it was near the top (as in your picture #2 from your post). This was done so the mini sunvisor would still be functional (block the sun). Using the regular sized mounting bracket would move the mirror down too low creating a gap between the mini sunvisor and mirror.

Since this bracket is unique (with a channel inside for wire routing) it is possible they used it on other mirrors (with the socket centered on the back of the mirror), but that would move the mirror closer to the roof line and prevent the mini sunvisor from functioning properly.

I have only had the opportunity to look at a few of these OEM mirrors (all of which came out of Europe), so its possible that there are more models than I am familiar with.

This is the only factory literature I have seen.
