HOW-TO: Replacing Odometer Gears

Post number 59 has been selected as best answered.

Thanks Dave!

'92 500e - Euro Spec is:

E1 = 12
E2 = 48x12
E3 = 48x12
Is the following gear the one I should order twice?

Based on the info from bb1, I'd say yes, you need 2 of those.

Can you tell if your old ones were the same tooth count, or are they too damaged to tell?

Nope, they were completely damaged so I couldn´t count them. I´ll get the two 12/48 gears and will report back to this thread with the result.

Thanks!

If converting a Euro 92 500E odometer from counting KM to MILE,

Would it just need to change of gear E3 = 48x17?

I am in the process of replacing these plastic gears on my 1992 500E Euro spec with Trip Computer option in datacard.
E1-12 teeth with wide center hole to go into the brass metal.
And two identical E2=48x12 gears.
Note the small single E1-12 teeth gear in the transparent bag is from Japan and no need to remove the brass metal part as it plays an important role in my opinion to be snug tight with the small E1-12 tooth gear.
Note that the European supplier on the other bag stated not to grease the gears.

I’ve read every post on this thread but I have a question I can’t find. Are all 3 of these gears friction fit? Are they intended to slip on the shaft or not ?

I have replaced my gears, new ones seemed a tad loose on the shaft. Odometer worked for several days but quit again when it was cold. I think the gears could be slipping on the shaft?

Are the gears supposed to slip on the shaft or not? I think I may need a little dab of superglue if this is the case.

The small 12-tooth gear is a press fit (see post #67). It should be tight enough to not require glue.

The larger gears are a slip fit, they should slide on/off the shafts easily.

Hello. We have a Canadian sold 93 500E car. Would this be considered what you guys refer to as Euro spec? The car spent some time in the US and the odometer clicks over in miles, so slower than it should be for Canada in kilometers. I believe they replaced the speedometer unit with a brand new US one from the dealer when it was it there.
We want to correct this, so is it simply replacing with the correct gears for kilometers or Euro spec? If so, can someone guide me as to which gear set will work? I've read the entire thread which is helpful, but there are pieces missing for this job I did not pick up on. Thanks all

If it is not possible to convert using gears, does anyone know where I can get a metric speedometer head for the 500E?
Thanks!

Hello, did this procedure yesterday and couldn’t disconnect the speed cable from the back, all the videos on YouTube have the metal kinda cable to unscrew but mine had a electrical connection, since it wasn’t coming out easily I was afraid not to break it, after a harder pull it came out.
I did not read about the brass sleeve and thought I got the wrong repair kit.
Well, it’s all back together but did not test yet, the wheels are at the shop.

Thanks for the tutorial.

The odo died on my beater 95 E420 with 242kmi. Haven't taken it apart yet but assume it's the odo gears. Just ordered a set from Garagistic. Back in 2016 the cost was ~$18 delivered.
Back in January 2022, in the beater 1995 E420, it was the small gear (E1) that failed. For reasons I don't recall, I only changed E1 and left the old E2/E3 in place. Welp, that finally came back to bite me, and today I noticed the odometer wasn't moving. Sure enough E2 had broken teeth. I had the new Garagistic gears on the shelf and replaced both E2 and E3 this time. Don't know what I was thinking back then! :doh:

As of Jan-2022 the price has increased to $26 delivered for the same items (17/48 third gear).
As of Jan-2024 the price has decreased to ~$20 delivered.

New URL:
Garagistic currently has these on "sale" at $14/set, which I suspect could be a perma-sale. Shipping was the same ~$10 for one kit or ten kits, so if you have multiple 124's, you'll save a few bucks if you order several of them to offset the high ship cost. Ten bucks for a 2-ounce USPS Ground Advantage (Parcel Post) package is padding their profit margin nicely. :rolleyes:

I recently had to do the same in my silver car. Both E1 and E2 were missing teeth. I ordered two sets in case the high miler needs them in the future…I think I replaced one of the gears 10 years ago so I’ll be ready 😀
