• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

We hope you will become an active contributor to the community!

I found this in my car

I actually don't know. What I do know:
1. GAL = GeschwindigkeitsAbhängige Lautstärkeanpassung = Speed dependent volume control
2. Geber = Sensor (Data provider)
3. The orange and green cable go into the front controller box under the hood
4. The car has very sensitive ASR which even kicks in at higher speed when I slam the accelerator

So my guess is:
That it was either to address the issue of the 245 / 285 tires combo that was once mounted (ASR)
That it is a top speed defeat
That it is something to address some type of speed reading for other purposes to trick the computer

Managed to find the details the previous owner and contact him (he sold the car in 2002)

He does not remember having anything modified. He only recalls two modifications: 1. the wider tires and 18" wheels (which he converted back when he sold the car) and putting a 300km/h speedometer in. It could be that the device is for the speed adjustment.

ASR should not kick in unless a wheel loses traction. What are the exact tire sizes on your car now, front & rear?

When converting to a 300kph/190mph speedometer, the input speed signal does not need adjustment. However, the speedometer itself needs to be recalibrated both for the different upper range, and also to keep the odometer accurate.

I now have standard 245s on my E60 Limited.

In principle I agree, but you never know. Who knows what tricks they used back then. If they just changed the front plate, then you need to slow the signal by 15%. All these companies were small independent engineering organisations using all their short cuts and tricks. When the car is out of hibernation, I'll check the flow of the cables.

What I do know, my E60 accelerates between 210 and 250 the way the E500 does between 170 and 210 (All km/h)

Does your car still engage ASR "at higher speed when I slam the accelerator", with the 245 tires all around, on warm/clean/dry pavement?

With the speedo, if the faceplate is changed and you adjust the signal by 15% (or whatever the appropriate amount is), this will screw up the odometer reading. The speedo electronics need to be changed (different resistors solder in, or something like that) to get the odo in sync again. And when doing that, the entire unit can be recalibrated to match the original "K" number so no external signal adjustment is needed.

And yeah... the E60 is a beast compared to the pokey slow 5L....

GSXR, I agree with you. What I'm trying to do is understand what was once done here. I have no interest in any back yard mods.

I have had the ASR kicking in at 190+ km/h. But over the years my foot has lost some lead and is lighter these days.....

If ASR is engaging (yellow warning triangle flashing) at 190kmh on the 5L, something seems amiss. Any fault codes? Has the ASR module been confirmed to be the correct part number for the car? Etc.
