Leaking SLS High Pressure Hose?

Found some leaks of PS fluid and possibly SLS fluid and found that this line is rubbing on the edge of the A/C compressor and may now be leaking (this is the line that runs down and across the front of the oil pan).

PSLineLeak.jpeg

1. Is there something missing that is supposed to protect this line from rubbing on the A/C compressor? Or could it be that this line simply needs to be loosened and readjusted to not come into contact (if that is possible)?
2. I am going to replace this line, but want to confirm that is it part # 124-320-91-53 ("high pressure expansion hose - used with self-levelling device").

Thanks!
Jeff

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

Quite often it's non pressured suction hose (about 5 cm long) from bottom of power steering oil tank to tandem pump that starts to leak. When it leaks the oil will be spread about around thanks to fan while it's might be hard to point leaking part. I suggest to check the suction hose (006 997 09 82, HOSE BETWEEN SUPPORT AND POWER STEERING PUMP) first. It's also much cheaper to replace.

Leaking High Pressure Hose?

What I have done in the case of a rubbing hose is to take a length of larger diameter hose that is a few cm longer than the length of the area. Cut a slit down the middle, apply the sheath over the area and a zip tie on each end. If you are replacing with new, get a length of electrical shrink tube and do the same thing, just use a double layer of shrink over the area.

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

Jeff, the hose should not rub at the AC connector area. Most likely it's just routed incorrectly. You may be able to loosen the banjo fitting and and adjust routing slightly. See attached photos.

The leak may not be coming from the hose itself... yes it's possible, just unlikely. The best way to identify the source is to clean everything in the area bone dry (look closely for any oil from anything above the hose), then wrap a paper towel 'diaper' around the suspect area on the hose with wire or twist-ties to hold it in place. Drive the car and keep checking the paper towel. If the hose is leaking, you'll find oil soaking from inside out. If the oil is coming from an external source, the paper towel will be oiled from the outside in.

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

The routine g of the high pressure sls line should have a few clamps which keep it from rubbing . You can add and sister clamps to keep things from rubbing. Pclamps or Adial (sp). Line sizes match America close enough to not matter.

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

Correct - there are 3 clamps for the hose, one at the front/center of the oil pan and two at the lower AC compressor bracket. All 3 are visible in the photo attached in my previous post.

Even with the clamps in place, if the banjo fitting at the SLS pump was tightened with the hose routed too far clockwise, it could touch the AC compressor electrical connector as seen in Jeff's photo.

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

Thanks guys. Its possible the high pressure hose is not leaking, but it's certainly damaged from the rubbing. Don't know how thick the covering is. I am going to see if I can get it to angle away from the AC compressor electrical connector.

Great tip on using paper towels to find the leak. I will give that a shot. Have not driven or started the car since December, and it was leaking PS and or SLS fluid until just a month ago.

Re: Leaking High Pressure Hose?

The hose is quite thick. As long as the outer covering is not nicked more than a few mm deep, it's probably fine. The fun part will be cleaning the fluid off everything!

Does anyone know if the original SLS high pressure hose has a valve inside the hose?
AFAIK there is no valve inside the hose on V8 models. Wagons have a restriction mid-hose but it's visible as a metal fitting in the middle.
